  1. Amazing to see 'Oblique' heading back onto the racks after a long stint off the radar. Superb session !
  2. First track on 'Mother Ship'. After a relatively subdued start to the solo, it goes absolutely apeshit. Amazing stuff - I wonder what they thought of that in the studio .
  3. Dave Alvin Paul Simon Brother Theodore ← Brother Jack McDuff Brother Ah Ahmed Abdul-Malik
  4. Maybe she can do a piano/guitar duet with Tony Blur next time she visits ol' London town..
  5. General 'Stormin' Norman' Schwartzkopf Norman Bates Blaster Bates
  6. Herbie Hancock 'Speak Like A Child' (BN Liberty stereo) Gil Melle 'Gil's Guests' (Japanese Victor)
  7. The Elvin 'Lighthouse' CDs were definitely issued as 2 separate CDs by BN around 1989 (ish). I have Vol 1 of this (now superseded by the Mosaic). Other 'Doubletimes' include, I think, the Stan Kenton 'Innovations' set ( ). As mentioned previously the McIntyre was also a 2CD Doubletime, probably my favourite of these. Just recently picked up the Grolnick ( ). Hiding in the shelves in a London store until I spotted it. Two great sessions on that one. HMV have also been selling some of the 2CD sets at £4.99, including the Dorham, the Burrell and the Green/Clark. Bargain of the century !
  8. Friedrich Gulda 'Music For Piano and Band Number 2' (UK CBS). With Tubby Hayes.
  9. Jack Daniels Jack McDuff Macbeth
  10. Fantastic - that would be amazing if my hunch was right ! Here's a link to what I think might have been the show. First came out in 1967 so the timing is about right. World About Us
  11. 'Mirrors - The Amazing Benny Bailey' Arranged and Conducted By Francy Boland (Freedom)
  12. Who the $%*& is 'Arthur Treacher' ? Never heard of it !
  13. 'Deep In A Dream' by James Gavin is sat on my shelf and this thread is just the incentive to pick it up again. Very good book. Also have the 'autobiography' which I have yet to read through. Incredible 'ear' player - truly great natural melodic sense but not a great technician. Shared Miles' gift of making the most of the technical limitations and working round them. Enjoy the Mosaic studio and live boxes very much but also like the Prestige material recorded for Richard Carpenter where Chet is mainly on the flugelhorn. The story behind those sessions is pretty harrowing, to say the least !
  14. The Boston Strangler Hugh Cornwell Patricia Cornwell
  15. I'm a big fan of Bobby ! Try to get hold of his couple of Blue Note releases - long OOP. 'The Inventor' and 'Post-Motown Bop', both dating from the late 80s/early 90s. There's also a third who's title eludes me for the moment ('No Question About It', I think). All 3 are excellent. Potential Mosaic Select material IMO. The past times I have seen Bobby and his band Horizon in clubs (with the equally fine Victor Lewis as co-lead) he has always given a superb and very tight performance. A great technician and showman with a very engaging and friendly manner with the audience. Blakey chose well yet again..
  16. ... and responding to this thread on a Summer Saturday evening I need my head examining ! Just a quick look in the Mosaic booklet shows that there are good photos of the duo on pages 1 and 3 that would have done the job nicely.
  17. Can't be right, surely.. On the other hand, this was around the time that the Byrd/Adams 'last chance' rumpus started.
  18. The Elvin is set number 195 so it's older than the Max, Gerald Wilson and the Hodges. I have the Mosaic Fall 2000 brochure number 33 in front of me, which introduced the Max on the front cover as the latest new item.
  19. I'm confident that Mosaic do not manipulate anything, they are not that type of operation. A couple of times recently they have put sets straight to 'Last Chance'. I suspect that it was just plain oversight in each case, either a set timing out or a print run being exhausted and not enough time left to merit another batch.
  20. Another underhand Franco-German collaboration in advance of the forthcoming EC Summit...
  21. Got it ! Don't have Hodges V2 or the Max though..
  22. Gil Hodges Lon Warneke Hank Aaron ← Aaron Neville Neville Chamberlain Adolf Hitler
  23. Great !! These guys are wizards at getting us to send money in their direction.
  24. My guesses for forthcoming OOPs this year and into early 2006: Hank Mobley (can't believe it's still in print ) JJ Johnson (ditto) Gerald Wilson Max Roach Hodges 56-61 Elvin Jones Could be an expensive few months..
  25. Clarke-Boland Big Band 'Open Door' (Muse) Tubby Hayes 'Mexican Green' (Fontana Stereo)
