Erich Kleinschuster & Joe Henderson/Carmell Jones
sidewinder replied to soulpope's topic in Re-issues
I think I'll hold off with this very tempting set for time being, hopefully Dusty will be persuaded to get it in. My German skills at the moment are almost up to the level of Basic Fawlty ( ). -
Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?
sidewinder replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
No - the same thing happens to me ( ). Some of those nice black boxes gather dust in competition with the Brit Jazz and Blue Notes. I will be giving the Herbie Nichols and Thelonious Monk Complete Blue Note LP sets a spin today. -
Don't be put off the 'Black Marigolds'. It does have poetry in it and a sprinkling of harpsichord but there's some very nice music in there. The track 'Ursula' is a standout. The Lowther is also excellent. Obviously influenced by 'In A Silent Way' but with some very English folk influences in there too. If we do get to see a Wheeler 'Windmill Tilter' it will probably be dubbed from LP. The original master tapes are missing in action, possibly destroyed, I believe. Yes, I believe saxophonist George Khan was in that 'People' band. Haven't a clue what the music is like on that one. He's also on my £3 'Solid Gold Cadillac/Brain Damage'. This is a Westbrook 'take' on the rock music of the time and is both entertaining and quite funny. 'Citadel/Room 315' was out on an RCA Novus CD some (quite a few) years ago and I'm not aware of any plans for further reissue - obviously now due for a CD re-mastering. I've a vinyl copy of this one, very good session indeed and with some of Surman's best playing ever on it IMO. Hope to see Westbrook on the 17th June doing his current 'Art Wolff' touring show. Not sure about the Nucleus album - maybe someone else can help?

Thanks Clifford - this is quite fascinating. There is a recording of one of Yusef's Ronnie Scott shows from this period out on the Harkitt label at the moment. There was some incidental solo flute music used on one of the 'serious' shows on BBC2 TV back in the late 60s that I always thought sounded just like Lasha but dismissed as possibly being from him. I wonder if it is Lasha though? Quite possible, it would seem...

Big John Patton's 'Understanding' (or anything on the Mosaic Select) tend to get cranked up pretty loud.

I was just listening to this and it didn't seem very dynamic (the sound, not the music which is very dynamic.) I have what I think is the first cd version of it. Has it been remixed for later releases? Is it in stereo? ← Not sure on the CD version. I tend to play either the UK Vogue LP twofer 'Atomic Mr Chairman' or the Mosaic Roulette Studio LP set.

And I thought I was doing well picking this one up for £3..

That is a great, great record. Man! Just thinking about it gets me fired up. Too bad it's on the shelf and I'm at work, otherwise I'd spin it right now... Lasha's got some great stories about that session, too. ← Yep - just getting into it. Looks like Stan Tracey's trio must have accompanied him at Ronnie Scotts, hence the lineup of this LP based around Tracey's trio. Can you enlighten us as to what stories Lasha has regarding this session? Just about to crank up Bill Russo Orchestra 'Stonehenge' (UK Columbia Lansdowne)

Funilly enough I caught McCoy and his trio on what was probably my last trip to LA. It was in Royce Hall at the UCLA Campus. I didn't realise at the time the huge jazz significance of that place (Mingus 1965 performance etc.). Also caught David Sanchez there. -

Cahuenga Bvd - thats the place. Last gig I caught there was Hank Jones and his trio. Shelly's was a few doors away. There's a plaque on the sidewalk in recognition, just outside the door, worth checking out. -
Joe Harriott 'Personal Portrait' (UK Columbia)

Art Taylor 'AT's Delight' (BN 47W63rd mono DG original) followed by: Prince Lasha Ensemble 'Insight' (UK CBS)

ditto the above ( Miles insists that you crank it up in the inner sleeve, no arguments ) and 'Dark Magus'. The Count's 'Atomic Mr Basie' is another.

Nice article - catches the atmosphere of the Jazz Bakery very nicely. Has Catalinas moved location recently or is it still in the North Hollywood location? (if my memory is right it was just a few doors away from the old Shelly's Manne Hole location). Amazed to hear that Gildo Mahones is still playing gigs ! -
Whoah !! The LP in near-mint I can understand at $150 but the Verve Elite CD? I don't think I've ever seen a copy of the LP BTW. Anyone want to swap their mint LP for the Verve Elite?

Still time for the Specs to buy 500 copies of the Hank Mobley set...

Yes, that side one is heavily influenced by the sort of stuff that Lord Kitchener was putting out at the time and which developed into Ska music. Very popular in and around London. It's interesting how many of the UK players of the time included calypso type tunes in their recordings. Ian Hamer includes one on the first live session in the recent 'Acropolis' release on Jasmine. I wonder though if there was also a Rollins connection? I've heard Surman refer to meeting with Sonny and sitting in with him at Scott's 'Old Place' shortly after he arrived in London so this is a definite possibility.

Yes, I believe it. In good condition, it's quite rare. One of Lateef's very best IMO.

Donald Byrd 'Byrd In Flight' BN 47W63rd mono DG pressing. Superb fidelity on this one. Can also never understand why DB's fine Blue Notes get slagged off by the critics !

This Shorty Rogers set looks like it might break the US all-comers record.. Shorty Rogers Mosaic Set
-
In the past there were several sets that got snapped up last minute by a shop in Japan doing a bulk purchase - the Grant Green/Sonny Clark comes to mind. I wonder if something similar is happening here? Can't say I blame Mosaic for doing this. I guess they have to make sure that their customer base in Outer Mongolia/Borneo/South Georgia who are not hooked up to the Internet get a chance to buy the set...

Byrd/Adams goes straight to "Last Chance"

Sound quality of this set is fine, don't have a problem with it. A lovely set - gets a recommendation from me. A very good overview of ST's mid-size group sessions spanning the entire 1960s. Also works extremely well as a Stanley Turrentine tribute
