    Joe Lovano

If its the UK version, it will be...
  2. Up again with this thread. This CD is friggin' fantastic. 'Hymnus for che' features a wonderful group and great performance by Benny Bailey - what a discovery. I wonder how you get hold of those individual Wewerka discs?
  3. According to HMV site the Duttons were out on the 18th, so you may be in luck, akanalog.

    Crusaders

Don't forget too the upcoming Mosaic set of the Jazz Crusaders Pacific Jazz sessions. It's not often I pre-order but I did with this one.
  5. Nice to see this one already generating some differering opinions from the board members ! Mike - This one did come out as a 'domestic' RVG. The 'Bards' don't seem to stock it but it's available on Amazon.
  6. There's been mention of this on AAJ. The original word was that there would be another batch May/June. No word though from Universal UK, it's gone ominously quiet. The hope is that if a Giles Peterson Vol 3 comes out in Oct/Nov there will be another batch. I hope Universal UK haven't suddenly gone cold over all of this ( ). Time to stock up on 'Batch 1' methinks (I still need to get 'Troppo' and the d'Silva). By the way there's also Mike Westbrook's 'Celebration' in the original batch of 'Repressed'.
  7. Sounds like a brand of cider
  8. Geoffrey de Havilland Wilbur Wright Wilbur Harden
  9. According to Amazon UK the release date is May 30th. I haven't seen any of these for sale as yet but will keep my eyes peeled this weekend. With a bit of luck they will be available to purchase (and actually there on the shelves ) during the weekend of the Bath Festival. akanalog - if your parents are in the London area the best place to look for these would probably be in the HMV at Picadilly Circus (the old Tower Records) or at 'Ray's Jazz' in the Foyles Bookstore in Charing Cross Road (Leicester Square tube). If they don't have them, other outlets would be unlikely.
  10. Just a heads up that the AOTW selection for the week of May 22nd will be Kenny Dorham's Blue Note Classic 'Una Mas' An absolutely stellar line up of Kenny Dorham, Joe Henderson, Herbie Hancock and a very young Tony Williams. Recorded by RVG on April 1st 1963. The first of several Blue Note collaborations between the front line of Dorham and Henderson, in what would be a truly legendary partnership. I thought it was about time that KD had an AOW nomination so here it is ! This one is also easy to get hold of on CD so should (hopefully) generate a bit of comment. Hope that this meets with general satisfaction - I'll post a few thoughts about the session early next week. In addition, I'll open this thread to discussion of Kenny Dorham's Blue Note work in general.
  11. Miles Davis/Bill Laswell Panthalassa (Sony Jazz limited edition vinyl)
  12. I've ummed and ahed over a few that were in 'Last Chance' and usually decided to place an order just before the call. I can't think of a single case where I've regretted it. My only regret is not knowing more about Mosaic and their website before this Millenium so that I could have got all those nice OOP sets at original cost.
  13. Yes, he signed the Mosaic booklet with great care. He remarked that he was very pleased with the set and also had a personal copy (001 presumably). Regards his BN sessions with great satisfaction.
  14. I gave up searching in the UK and bought from either Tower or HMV Canada, I think. Seem to recall a price around the $35-40 mark. HMV Canada was a good source at the time for some of the scarcer Elites (I don't think the word had got out up there).
  15. A snip for someone. That original price of £47 is outrageous, although as with most/all of the Verve Elites the music and presentation are outstanding.
  16. Interesting thread. I've often wondered about a 2 minute snippet of Jimmy Smith film I have on video which looks as though it comes from this vintage, seems to have the same lineup and was included on a BBC TV show hosted by Slim Gaillard. Tantalising glimpse of Jimmy in his prime - I would love to see the full film.
  17. SS1 - It's worth pulling out all the stops to see Sam Rivers with the current trio, if you can do it. He's also an extremely gracious guy and was very happy to sign the Mosaic booklet that I brought along to the gig. It's worth seeing if Sam will sign it (much easier I think at the smaller gigs). PS - his handwriting is also nice and artistic too.
  18. I've been giving these CDs a spin in the car during the week. Thoroughly enjoyable - and as mentioned earlier it very much takes me back 20+ years to seeing this group maybe a week or two before at Scotts. What I can recall was that Woody was on incredible form during that tour. As has been previously pointed out the group was excellent too - these guys worked very much as a team. The addition of Steve Turre on trombone was the icing on the cake. I remember speaking to people in the club who had travelled over to the UK from Holland just to see the gig, such was his reputation at that time. As I recall it, he was also heavily into doing his 'Tai Chi' on the stage - not something you saw everyday in the UK during the early 1980s.
  19. That 20% LP set sale was the best. A great time to stock up on the 'Miles' sets.
  20. Derek Bailey is from Sheffield as well I think, so that makes 3 influential guitarists from Yorkshire.
  21. There is something in the water in Yorkshire. Together with Derbyshire they do the best water in the country, thanks to the limestone of the Pennines.. :rsmile: I've often wondered about John McLaughlin's accent - it sounds weird to me too, although there's certainly hints of his native South Yorkshire in there (Sheffield area, I think). Tony Oxley's another one from Sheffield - creative place. I suspect that McLauglin's (not very broad) Yorkshire accent has been further diluted by many years of living and working in NYC. Not easily achieved with a Yorkshire accent but the guys in Shakti must have worked on him I guess.
  22. The last 20% sale must be about 4 years ago now. Their last couple of sales have been (1) 10% off and (2) free shipping, I believe.
