I've got the Milburn LP set in my long-range sights, not sure when it is likely to hit 'running low' (anyone any idea?). I like the Charles Brown LP set so this will likely be a nice next port of call in that genre.

Which Lee Morgan CD/LP Are You Enjoying Right Now?
sidewinder replied to Soulstation1's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Choice track for this workout experience must be 'Rio' Not one to 'Procrastinate' on... -

:rsmile: Hmmm - do I sense a cross-linkage here to another recent Germanic thread?

These German Libertys should not be mentioned in the same breath as the Pathe Marconi DMMs . Visually they are hardly distinguishable from Blue/White US Liberty pressings but just have a bit of German text around the periphery of the label. The quality of the pressings far exceeds that of any US Liberty pressings of the 1967-early 70s vintage I have heard. Better quality control - comparable I guess to the early (pre-Liberty) NY USA vintage in the US.

LF: A Baystate Discography (and/or general info)

A couple more: RJL-8105 Blakey & Messengers 'On The New Tradition' RJL-8054 Benny Golson 'Time Speaks' -
Glad to hear that it is not just me that is hearing this ! That Morgan 'Live at the Lighthouse' has tremendous presence and is in mint. 'Van Gelder' in the hot wax too. In fact it absolutely trounces the 3CD set in terms of sound quality. I think the LP has additional announcements by Lee too (although admittedly the extra material on the CD set is nice). Worth keeping a lookout for these !

Tony Williams Lifetime 'The Old Bums Rush'. US Polydor promotional copy.

I've got Baystate RJL-8026, which is Benny Golson 'One More Mem'ry'. This lists on the OBI: RJL-8013 Benny Golson 'California Message' RJL-8018 Joe Chambers 'New York Concerto' (sounds nice, me wantee ) RJL-8025 Some dude/band called 'Kazu', can't translate ! -
Recently listening to a German Liberty copy of Lee Morgan's 'Live At The Lighthouse' (which has the original US sleeve) I was impressed at the really excellent pressing quality. On the basis of this and several other German Liberty's in my collection (including a 'Natural Essence' and a 'Conquistador') I'd say that the German pressings definitely have the edge on the US counterparts of this particular vintage. Anyone else got any of these Teutonic beauties and care to comment?

Followed up by Johnny Coles 'Little Johnny C' mono NY USA DG side 1.
-
Horace Silver 'Horace-Scope' 47 W 63rd DG both sides. A few marks on the vinyl but the stylus is totally oblivious to them. These old original BN pressings are the greatest !
-
Looks like the 'Applause' reissue vinyl artwork. Typical 1970s taste low point..
-
'Oblique' and 'Happenings' are long overdue for reissue. Both gems.

Shut the hell up. I strongly recommend this set. :rsly:

Yes, there are a couple of price guides for UK vinyl. I think they are called 'Rare Record Price Guide' and 'Record Collector Price Guide', or something close to this. The former (I think) is a heavy black-cover paperback that has just come out in the 2004 edition (says '2006' on the cover ! ). It covers all kinds of popular music with UK artists and UK releases of US and 'foreign' artists. There are also price 'guestimates' for the more common Blue Note imports from the latter 1960s - for the most part these count as pretty good fiction.. :rsmile: Worth a search on Amazon UK using 'Record Price Guide' as search criteria. This should give you the title details.

When I spoke with Sam Rivers the other day he confirmed that he had a copy of the Mosaic set, no doubt his set is No. 1 of that gem.

Picked up a few gems over the weekends (not necessarily bargains but not too bad either). 'Webster Young Plays and Sings The Music of Miles Davis' Vols 1 to 3 on VGM records, in near mint The Danny Richmond 'Music For The In-Crowd' original LP on Impulse. Rolf and Joachim Kuhn's 'Impressions of New York' LP on Impulse A Mobley 'Reach Out' original Liberty pressing in mint A Horace Silver 'Finger Poppin'' 47th/63rd deep groove original A Bud Shank/Bob Brookmeyer with strings 10" on Vogue (UK original of the rare Pacific Jazz session) And a few Pink Floyd original pressings on EMI/Columbia. Not a bad haul !

By the way, there's a broadcast on BBC Radio 3 this Friday afternoon of Julian Joseph in conversation with Sam Rivers (interspersed with recording selections). Should be good ! The QEH concert is also up for broadcast by the BBC sometime over the next few weeks. Wednesday's 'Impromptu' was significantly different from Friday's. I liked the Wednesday performance - very incisive, that one. A gem !

It's mentioned in the 'Impressed' sleeve notes and I may once have seen a copy in the racks about 25 years ago. Very rare apparently and has Ardley, Norma Winstone, Ian Carr and a whole load of other Brit jazzers doing a 'Bardish' suite, hence the 'Will'. I've recently seen a copy sell for £250

I like both 'Shades of Blue/Dusk Fire' and 'Phase III/Live' on the BGO releases and can recommend them both equally. Great value also with two rare original LPs in each case on one CD. Possibly the latter would be the first one I would go for, although 'Dusk Fire' is a gem and should not be missed. Haven't heard 'Change Is' yet but hope to pick that one up real soon. Another recommendation by the way would be that 'Get Augerized' compilation CD with Brian Auger's Oblivion Express. Looks to have lots of good stuff on it, including the material with Julie Driscoll/Tippett. Saw an old TV film of 'Wheels On Fire' quite recently (taken from Top Of The Pops) and it looked pretty damn good stuff.

I'd put this one in the 'middle-ing' catgory. There are some nice solos by Hank but the session sounds under-rehearsed and RVG's non-presence in the recording booth is somewhat missed. Not one that I spin too often I'm afraid.

Absolutely !

A little medical advice, please...
sidewinder replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
There's nothing further I can add, Jim, but I'll kep my fingers crossed for your wife and offer my very best wishes that this is sorted out soon. I think the general advice - to seek specialist treatment at the earliest and not to let up until this is given - is the best one. Good luck ! -
Nice to see Ardley's 'Will Power' (originaly Argo 2LP) on that list.
