  1. I definitely hear that Cherry influence on the 'Plugged Nickel' recording, in particular.
  2. I remember picking up the first couple of 'Eastern Rebellion' albums, which were a huge breath of fresh air at the time.
  3. I've always felt that Booker ploughed very much his own furough. Obviously heavily influenced by Clifford Brown, Coltrane and (especially) Dolphy. A questing spirit that must owe quite a bit to the encouragements of Max Roach and a melancholy underlying all of his music which seems (sadly) very much his own.
  4. Even more interesting is the version that Curtis did on FIRE AND FILLIGRE for BeeHive. He replaces the original bridge with the one of "Sortie". Kinda' wack, really... I have this LP and will dig it out from the 'archive'. It's a good one !
  5. Yes, that's how it is spelt on Ervin's 'Heavy'. The spelling used for this tune on the original Solid State album is however 'Bacha Feelin''.
  6. This is pretty shocking news. Just the other day I was wondering about Ledford and what he had been working on of late. Saw him live with Metheny, as has been mentioned he always gave 110% in performance. RIP...
  7. 'Capuchin Swing' anyone? Capuchin Ding
  8. Larry Young 'Contrasts' - Liberty pressing.
  9. Check out also that Rhapsody DVD of the 'Sonny Criss All Stars' live at Memory Lane back in 1970. Hawes is in great form on that one.
  10. Love Cedar Walton's piano fills behind the unison front line on 'Sortie'. Just perfect ! Interesting to compare 'The Egyptian' with the other version on video with Morgan and John Gilmore, recorded in the UK. 'Mr Jin' of course is the total knockout blow to end the album. Shorter ups a gear on this one.
  11. 'Calling Miss Khadija' is sh*t hot - but there again the rest of the tracks are pretty incendiary. Morgan is on fire on this date. I've got a mono LP pressing of this one, which makes an interesting comparison listen with the RVG. Like both of them !
  12. The lineup on SS 18016 ('Live at the Village Vanguard') is: Side 1: 'Little Pixie II' (T. Jones) ' A' That's Freedom' (H. Jones) 'Bacha Feelin' (G.Brown) Side 2: 'Don't Git Sassy' (T. Jones) 'Willow Tree' (Razaf-Waller) 'Samba Con Getchu' (Brookmeyer)
  13. This is very sad news, my condolences. I've always hugely admired Jimmy's work with that George Benson group which recorded for Columbia in the 1960s. He lights a fire on those sessions..
  14. I have my disk courtesy of Tooter. Nice listening so far !
  15. I'll second those comments above about Jackie McLean. Any of his BNs for me is an instant tonic. Horace Silver comes into the same category. Put on any of his 50s and 60s BNs and you come out of it tapping your feet, marvelling at the inventiveness and eager to hear more. Same thing I guess would apply to the Blakey albums. Over the years they have given service over and above the call of duty... B-)
  16. Just giving this one a listen - the vinyl has been languishing forlornly in my ever-increasing 'pending' pile for some time now. Very nice modern mainstream session with Davis, Dusko Goykovich, Kenny Drew, Jimmy Woode and Al Levitt. All over from the Continent for a bit of London sight-seeing, by the look of it. Recorded by the guys at Mole Jazz back in 1987. I've yet to come across a Nathan Davis session that I don't like... Anyone else like (or know of) this one?
  17. Yes, this one is on the Mosaic set. Some beautiful music on this one, I don't listen to it enough. The lineup of RCA Victor albums included is: 'Take Ten' 'Bossa Antigua' 'Glad To Be Unhappy' 'Easy Living' Theres also material from the Warner Bros 'First Place Again!' and one of the Playboy anthologies (Vol 3).
  18. A mono NY pressing of 'Silver's Serenade'. This is a strangely under-rated session, especially the stuff on side 1.
  19. I'm happy to volunteer to do an AOTW over the next few weeks.
  20. Toshiba pressing of 'Little Johnny C'. A very fine session Duke Pearson indeed !
  21. Its now £200 in mint in the latest UK guide, but even so.. I see that there is another copy on there which looks a bit more 'mint'. Should be worth watching for entertainment over the next few days.. Maybe the publicity on Tooter's site has inflated this one..
  22. More ebay madness, this time featuring my avatar. And not even in mint... here...
  23. Outrageous ! Some of us have searched high and low across the global Mosaic domain (Anchorage to Katmandu) to secure some of the items on this list. How much did the 'bundle' cost, if you don't mind me asking? Those Commodores alone, in good nick, normally come in at around a 'k' or so.
  24. 'Sixth Sense' and 'Caramba' were the first Morgan albums I ever owned. Both on Liberty cassette cutouts. They got worn out within 6 months thanks to the endless plays they got. Still love those sessions !
  25. Gerald Wilson !! With Bill Holman and Colin Towns 'Mask' Orchestra as 'honourable mentions'
