  1. For the London Jazz Fest, here's an overview of some of the main concerts coming up. London Fest
  2. The line-up looks great and the tune selection is out of his world. I will look out for this one when it wings its way across the Atlantic. Still fanatical over Grachan's Blue Notes (and his contributions to the McLeans) so this is a must-have for me. Even if it is a 'belch'.
  3. 'Live In Seattle' should do the trick within 2 minutes... Just spinning a Fresh Sound copy of the Barclay 'Bobby Jaspar' session. Very nice vinyl reissue. I have my eye on a whole bundle of second-hand Fresh Sound Jaspars and will probably now take the plunge.
  4. ' Incoming........ '
  5. Mal Waldron Prestige double 'One and Two'. This has the 'Mal-1' and 'Mal-2' sessions. Great sound ! And interesting to hear Gigi Gryce on the first session, having just finished Mike F's book.
  6. The 'Stanley Turrentine' in this series absolutely smokes. Great set of Duke Pearson arrangements with Stanley on full bore...
  7. The London date is the final one, Adam, and its on Sat 13th Nov. It's at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, which is part of the South Bank Royal Festival Hall complex not far from Embankment station. Contact details are www.rfh.org.uk or tel: 08703 800 400. Full itinery Sam Rivers Trio plus Rivbea Orchestra UK: Sat 6 Nov - Birmingham CBSO Centre Sun 7th Nov - Brighton Concert Hall Tues 9th Nov - Leeds, Wardrobe Wed 10th Nov - Bath, Michael Tippett Centre ( ) Thurs 11th Nov - Manchester RNCM Fri 12th Nov - Southampton, Turner Sims Concert Hall ( ) Sat 13th Nov, London QEH
  8. No. 6 is a must-have for sure. It's one of my favourite Verve Elites. Track 4 from..This one
  9. Short snippet of Sam Rivers and trio playing live on the Radio 4 'Loose Ends' programme tonight. Saxophone trio performance with Sam on soprano, not sure what the tune was. Sounded absolutely wonderful ! A good omen for the UK tour, which starts in Birmingham tonight then a load of gigs across the country culminating in London next weekend. I have tickets for Bath (Wednesday) and Southampton (Friday). :rsmile:
  10. I'll bet that 'Bluesnik' sounds good. I came across a mono deepgroove last year. A few traces but the sonics are.. Wonderful Contemporary Records find today. Copy of Shelly Manne & Friends 'Bells are Ringing' mono deepgroove. Brand spanking new, sealed even, with the original Contemporary mailing list flyer. It must have sat in some cupboard for 40-odd years !
  11. I definitely hear that Cherry influence on the 'Plugged Nickel' recording, in particular.
  12. I remember picking up the first couple of 'Eastern Rebellion' albums, which were a huge breath of fresh air at the time.
  13. I've always felt that Booker ploughed very much his own furough. Obviously heavily influenced by Clifford Brown, Coltrane and (especially) Dolphy. A questing spirit that must owe quite a bit to the encouragements of Max Roach and a melancholy underlying all of his music which seems (sadly) very much his own.
  14. Even more interesting is the version that Curtis did on FIRE AND FILLIGRE for BeeHive. He replaces the original bridge with the one of "Sortie". Kinda' wack, really... I have this LP and will dig it out from the 'archive'. It's a good one !
  15. Yes, that's how it is spelt on Ervin's 'Heavy'. The spelling used for this tune on the original Solid State album is however 'Bacha Feelin''.
  16. This is pretty shocking news. Just the other day I was wondering about Ledford and what he had been working on of late. Saw him live with Metheny, as has been mentioned he always gave 110% in performance. RIP...
  17. 'Capuchin Swing' anyone? Capuchin Ding
  18. Larry Young 'Contrasts' - Liberty pressing.
  19. Check out also that Rhapsody DVD of the 'Sonny Criss All Stars' live at Memory Lane back in 1970. Hawes is in great form on that one.
  20. Love Cedar Walton's piano fills behind the unison front line on 'Sortie'. Just perfect ! Interesting to compare 'The Egyptian' with the other version on video with Morgan and John Gilmore, recorded in the UK. 'Mr Jin' of course is the total knockout blow to end the album. Shorter ups a gear on this one.
  21. 'Calling Miss Khadija' is sh*t hot - but there again the rest of the tracks are pretty incendiary. Morgan is on fire on this date. I've got a mono LP pressing of this one, which makes an interesting comparison listen with the RVG. Like both of them !
  22. The lineup on SS 18016 ('Live at the Village Vanguard') is: Side 1: 'Little Pixie II' (T. Jones) ' A' That's Freedom' (H. Jones) 'Bacha Feelin' (G.Brown) Side 2: 'Don't Git Sassy' (T. Jones) 'Willow Tree' (Razaf-Waller) 'Samba Con Getchu' (Brookmeyer)
  23. This is very sad news, my condolences. I've always hugely admired Jimmy's work with that George Benson group which recorded for Columbia in the 1960s. He lights a fire on those sessions..
  24. I have my disk courtesy of Tooter. Nice listening so far !
  25. I'll second those comments above about Jackie McLean. Any of his BNs for me is an instant tonic. Horace Silver comes into the same category. Put on any of his 50s and 60s BNs and you come out of it tapping your feet, marvelling at the inventiveness and eager to hear more. Same thing I guess would apply to the Blakey albums. Over the years they have given service over and above the call of duty... B-)
