  1. Fascinating stuff indeed ! I like the bit about finding that hen's teeth LP of 'Cosmic Music' on that NY trip. Must have been pretty difficult to track down, even then.
  2. Can't wait to hear this set. I like all of the people on this set, especially Bill Holman (who is a real class act and a nice guy to boot). I went for the Teddy Wilson LP set also - I'd never forgive myself if I missed that one.
  3. Some good Prestige twofers tonight. Mobley's 'Messages' and Red Garland 'Jazz Junction'. Nice sound on these mid-70s analogue pressings.
  4. 'Dexter Calling' and 'Our Man In Paris' for me, closely followed by 'Go'. All truly excellent, difficult to pick between them. 'Getting Around' is the only one I haven't really latched on to, although that may change if I ever hear the vinyl.
  5. Thanks ! There was certainly some stuff that sounded familiar. I already knew the tune 'Ife' from the Big Fun double album (I think) which I'd bought some years before. Shame I can't recall more of the details. I was stood very well back in a capacity crowd. Not too distant from my university finals, hence the fact I haven't remembered more of it (aren't the best things in life always interupted by impending crises.. ! )
  6. Incredibly quick. Looks like there's a frenzy on this set, I've just stuck my order in just to be safe..
  7. They've been around since the early 70s. Label run by Alan Bates, the white sleeve vinyl from Black Lion is a common sight over here. I've got one of the Monks (picture of him in blue and red sillouette, can't recall the title).
  8. A whole stack of nice stuff yesterday. Including Duke Ellingon 'Money Jungle' UA mono UK original in mint and heavy vinyl for £8 and Ira Sullivan 'Horizons' Atlantic original for £5. Also a stack of mint Steeplechases for £5 each, including the Shepp/Parlan's and several of the Dex's.
  9. Just listening to Louis Smith 'Prancin' (Steeplechase), to be followed by Ira Sullivan 'Horizons' on Atlantic, Duke Ellington 'Money Jungle' UK UA mono and Jimmy Smith 'Hobo Flats' UK Verve mono.
  10. Just been listening to Jimmy Woods 'Awakening'. Contemporary original, with Martin Banks.
  11. I have a local outlet that does the vinyl OJCs for £4-5. Some of the limited edition pressings too. Thats the sort of price I like. $29 is ridiculous.
  12. I'm sorry to hear this. I've always liked Martin Banks' playing, particularly with the ensemble on the Roland Kirk 'Slightly Latin' LP. He had a nice sound on flugel. Also great contributions to Jimmy Woods 'Awakening' and the Harold Land and Archie Shepp albums previously mentioned.
  13. Yeah, I know, although the vinyl and jacket come from two Blue Note eras rather far apart. You can't always tell a record by its cover/jacket The most common discrepancy I see is Liberty jackets with NY USA vinyl. I have a 'Cornbread' with that particular combo. NY jackets and 47 63rd vinyl is not too uncommon either. The UA vinyl with 43 W 61St NY 23 jacket is a more unusual one I think.
  14. The Olympic 100m dash with the new Mosaic consignment from the post van to indoors before the 'Mrs' can sense that something is afoot..
  15. Great to hear Clark is in good shape. I've lost track of how many LPs he's contributed to hugely over the years. Some unlikely settings too, such as the Grassella Oliphant Atlantic with Big John Patton. Clark is one of those guys who should be around forever. Back to Basie - had a listen today to 'Afrique' with arrangements by Oliver Nelson of material by Albert Ayler among others. I wonder if Teddy Reig sanctioned that one or was it recorded on the quiet. You can almost sence Freddie Green scratching his head in bemusement on some of these tracks.
  16. Didn't George Wallington pass away last year? (I remember seeing the estate sale of some of his Blue Note LPs on ebay).
  17. UA probably had some old jackets from the NY USA era lying around Leeway. Not uncommon. Graham Collier on the deck at present. 'Mosaics' released in 1971 on Philips. To be follwed a bit later on by the 2LP 'Jazz & Poetry 250' set on Argo with Michael Garrick and Rendell/Carr. Plus Laurie Lee, Spike Milligan & co doing the poetry..
  18. Yes John - he was excellent with the Andrew Hill Big Band. Prompt for me to catch a Tony Kofi gig !
  19. If my memory is right, Aric, his comeback was in 1981 at Kix, Boston. Sure created a stir when news of that appearance came out, although I recall reading a report in Jazz Journal that he was already back in the studio working on 'Man With The Horn' prior to this gig.
  20. Must be a scarcity of this particular title in Denmark.
  21. But make sure you include the list of Mosaics in the pre-nuptial agreement.. :rsmile:
  22. Snookie Young Jay McShann
  23. Hank also just did a gig in London with Joe Lovano - to great acclaim. Too bad I missed it.
  24. I'm sure my local HMV still has a stack of 10 or so of these for £4.99ish.
  25. Mosaic Johnny Hodges 1951-55 LP 6
