Those Emarcy twofers were pretty exciting at the time.. B-) . I've got the Clifford Brown/Max Roach and (pre 10CD set days) that one was the biz. There was also a Cannonball Adderley 'Spontaneous Combustion' which was pretty good but - again - superceded by that great 2CD Verve compilation of Emarcy material. Here in the UK these were US imports and usually found as cutouts. The Trip reissues are also seen quite a lot here as cutouts (the Mole Jazz shop seems to have a 'black hole/red dwarf' effect on these ) but I hate the lousy vinyl quality so tend to avoid them.

Has the Mosaic site been down since the weekend...
sidewinder replied to David Ayers's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Ditto. Maybe there's a frantic run under way on the 'Four Freshmen' set.. -
Another big thumbs up for Johnny Richards ! Over the last few days I have been giving repeated airplay to 'The Rights of Diablo' and 'My Fair Lady' off of a 1970s Vogue Jazz Double LP set. Absolutely fantastic stuff, especially 'Diablo'. Once you get over the period 'exotica' features and the vocal chorus (very much of its time) there is some fantastic arranging for the brass to savour. Richards is also a master at using latin american rhythmn. As an added bonus, 'Diablo' is also recorded at Webster Hall, so the acoustics are just dandy.. Looking forward to this particular Mosaic Select ! Incidentally, wasn't there another key Richards work recorded on an obscure Roost subsidiary (sort of a Greek Classics concept album?) recorded by a mid-sized group but which doesn't seem to be in the Mosaic Select lineup? Can't recall the title at this time.

The same one I was thinking of going for. I hope you enjoy it! Thanks ! I'll post my thoughts on this set after I have received and had a listen. -

Looks like I was successful on ebay with this one last night, along with the Bud Powell set. Looking forward to hearing this set, looks mighty interesting.. -
did england really have twice a day mail service
sidewinder replied to a topic in Miscellaneous Music
Sure is ! (or rather ... was). The old system had first and second delivery. First around 7-8am. Second around lunchtime. First class mail usually got to anywhere in the country within 24 hours. Sadly the system is now not it was - my mail tends to be once aday around 12am (and if there's a Mosaic in there, often later.. ). -
Complete Dolphy Prestige Box Set
sidewinder replied to Leeway's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Great version of 'Stolen Moments' by the way on that Lockjaw session. This box is excellent and is my main resource for the Dolphy Prestige material (I don't have much of his on vinyl apart from a BN 'Out to Lunch' and a 3LP America issue '5 Spot' set). Hardly a weak moment throughout the whole box, much of it superlative and with a nice informative booklet too. I recommend this one ! You also get the Mal Waldron session 'The Quest', the Ron Carter dates and those Latin Jazz Qunintet sessions as added bonuses. -
Johnny Richards - 'The Arranger's Touch'. Vogue 2LP set with 'Rites of Diablo'

Just been reading an article in the Sunday papers about botched silicone implants and this one came to mind...

Oh wait - 'Cuban Fire' was the McFarland suite on the other side of 'Latin Kaleidoscope' wasn't it? I can breath easy..

Some of the most fascinating material on the set are things like the Levister which only a total madman (or Mingus ) would have had the inspiration to record. A treasure ! Anyway, reminder for me to get back to the main feature of this thread ie. Mingus vinyl

John Lewis - 'The Golden Striker - Music for Brass and Piano By John Lewis Conducted and Played By The Composer' (Atlantic). Mighty fine Also just had a listen to 'The Giants of Jazz' 2LP set on Atlantic. Recorded in London in the early 70s by Dizzy, Stitt, Monk, Kai Winding, Al McKibbon and Blakey. Schhhhmokin' B-)

All great sessions. I really should have picked up the 'Three Latin Adventures' CD when it was available as I don't have 'Cuban Fire'. Doh !

LF: LP jackets for 'progressive' BN 60's dates...
sidewinder replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Offering and Looking For...
I've seen a copy of 'Andrew !!!' in the blue/white UA release from the early 70s, some of the other Hills sometimes crop up in the blue label mid-70s version, although I don't see them often. Don't recall seeing 'Black Fire' in anything other than NY USA but there must be a whole bundle of blue label copies around. I've certainly got old import BN availability lists for the UK from 1975/76, the vintage of the 'Blue' period, with most of the titles you are interested in there listed. How about some of the 1980s DMM issues? - very useful for the cover art if not for the sound quality ( ). 'Fuschia', 'Lifetime', 'Spring' and 'Evolution' were all part of the French releases. In fact the option of using my old DMMs in the manner you suggest did cross my mind more than once ! Another option is to get hold of vinyl Conns for 'Judgement', 'Basra', 'Smokestack' etc. but again they can also be hard to come by, although the $ hit is a lot less than NY USA. Good luck ! :rsmile: -
I have a French RCA 'Tijuana Moods' from the pre-digital era which sounds pretty good. My 'Mingus Mingus Mingus' is an early 70s UK reissue, again pre-digital and sounds excellent. A lot of the Impulse reissues from the 1980s onwards (there was a series put out in Germany for example) are DMM and therefore to be avoided I think. The Debut 10 CD set by the way I think is an absolute treasure. Although the sound is not state of the current art, the material is astonishing. Probably the most fascinating box set in my collection, up there with Dean Benedetti in that respect.

The Black Lion 'On Her Majesty's Pleasure' must be due for reissue I guess. There's some fantastic stuff on that one. Not least the work of Tony Coe, Ronnie Scott and Johnny Griffin. There was also a compilation put out by MPS some years ago now, out of print now, I've got the feeling the title was 'Three Latin Adventures' or something of that ilk. Around the same time they brought out the Nathan Davis.

Another big thumbs up for Ben's Collectors Records. Ben is a real friendly guy and really knows and appreciates his jazz (when I spoke with him he was planning a recital on 'The Life and Times of Shelly Manne' to the local jazz society, way cool B-) ). The shop has an excellent jazz selection at good prices and lots of crates of stuff to delve into. A veritable vinyl nerd's nirvana in fact. Some good CDs in there too for those of a digital 'bent'.

Welcome back!

I didn't even know that the BBC recorded Silver for this series and my suspicion is that the tape may have been wiped to make space for dross - a fate which happened to other stuff on this series and also on Jazz 625 (there was a Tubby Hayes Big Band also put out around this time also on 'Jazz Goes To College'). Standard practice at the time and absolutely tragic in terms of jazz history. The same thing happened to some good Joe Harriott broadcasts on both national and regional television which were lost as a result.

Mike - I fully agree with your comment on the Carmen McRae. Her voice is in wonderful form on this LP, the only negative from my perspective is the 'tinkly' sound of the electric piano on some of the tracks, which can sound a bit dated now. My copy is the UK Black Lion release and I've never been happy with the sound quality, which I find amazing as this session was recorded by Adrian Kerridge (of Rendell-Carr Dennis Preston Columbia fame) at Lansdowne studios. Its probably a Black Lion thing, I've never been happy with the quality of their 70s vinyl on the whole. Often looks mint but sounds less than mint. Maybe I sould invest in the Rearward reissue.. Thanks for the recommendation Ubu - there's some mighty interesting Italian jazz there which I'm sure to sample in future orders. I put in an order yesterday for the 'Off Limits' the Griffin/Bags 2LP, the Shihab 'Cats' 2LP and the Drevo LP with the crazy cover. About 4 hours later I saw a mint second hand copy of the Drevo in a shop over here for a few pounds. Just typical !
