  1. I have a French RCA 'Tijuana Moods' from the pre-digital era which sounds pretty good. My 'Mingus Mingus Mingus' is an early 70s UK reissue, again pre-digital and sounds excellent. A lot of the Impulse reissues from the 1980s onwards (there was a series put out in Germany for example) are DMM and therefore to be avoided I think. The Debut 10 CD set by the way I think is an absolute treasure. Although the sound is not state of the current art, the material is astonishing. Probably the most fascinating box set in my collection, up there with Dean Benedetti in that respect.
  2. The Black Lion 'On Her Majesty's Pleasure' must be due for reissue I guess. There's some fantastic stuff on that one. Not least the work of Tony Coe, Ronnie Scott and Johnny Griffin. There was also a compilation put out by MPS some years ago now, out of print now, I've got the feeling the title was 'Three Latin Adventures' or something of that ilk. Around the same time they brought out the Nathan Davis.
  3. or possibly
  4. Just listening to another Riverside mono. Bobby Timmons 'Sweet and Soulful Sounds'. Sounds sweet ! :rsmile:
  5. Now theres dedication to the cause..
  6. Another big thumbs up for Ben's Collectors Records. Ben is a real friendly guy and really knows and appreciates his jazz (when I spoke with him he was planning a recital on 'The Life and Times of Shelly Manne' to the local jazz society, way cool B-) ). The shop has an excellent jazz selection at good prices and lots of crates of stuff to delve into. A veritable vinyl nerd's nirvana in fact. Some good CDs in there too for those of a digital 'bent'.
  7. Welcome back!
  8. I didn't even know that the BBC recorded Silver for this series and my suspicion is that the tape may have been wiped to make space for dross - a fate which happened to other stuff on this series and also on Jazz 625 (there was a Tubby Hayes Big Band also put out around this time also on 'Jazz Goes To College'). Standard practice at the time and absolutely tragic in terms of jazz history. The same thing happened to some good Joe Harriott broadcasts on both national and regional television which were lost as a result.
  9. Mike - I fully agree with your comment on the Carmen McRae. Her voice is in wonderful form on this LP, the only negative from my perspective is the 'tinkly' sound of the electric piano on some of the tracks, which can sound a bit dated now. My copy is the UK Black Lion release and I've never been happy with the sound quality, which I find amazing as this session was recorded by Adrian Kerridge (of Rendell-Carr Dennis Preston Columbia fame) at Lansdowne studios. Its probably a Black Lion thing, I've never been happy with the quality of their 70s vinyl on the whole. Often looks mint but sounds less than mint. Maybe I sould invest in the Rearward reissue.. Thanks for the recommendation Ubu - there's some mighty interesting Italian jazz there which I'm sure to sample in future orders. I put in an order yesterday for the 'Off Limits' the Griffin/Bags 2LP, the Shihab 'Cats' 2LP and the Drevo LP with the crazy cover. About 4 hours later I saw a mint second hand copy of the Drevo in a shop over here for a few pounds. Just typical !
  10. It must have been 1968'ish Leeway, there seem to be both CS and CL designations available up to 'Miles In The Sky' (at least according to Goldmine). Now listening to Johnny Griffin Quartet 'The Kerry Dancers' on Riverside (also in mono, this one is a real ringer) and Jimmy Owens 'No Escaping It !!!' on UK Polydor. The Shelly Manne 'Son of Gunn !!' mono deepgroove is on deck.. :rsmile:
  11. Wasn't 'Status' a Prestige budget line put out in the mid to late 60s, usually on thinner vinyl? Looks like what is on the picture is a Status sleeve with New Jazz vinyl, sort of like a Prestige version of a 'Liberty/NY USA' combo.
  12. 'Cannonball Adderley Quintet in San Francisco Featuring Nat Adderley' (Riverside) - wonderful !
  13. Just been checking the Schema sisite over in Italy and they have some mighty fine reissues on Rearward, both CD and LP, including some good CBBB material. 'Off Limits' looks a corker (I've only ever heard 'Astro Rama' and it smokes), the McRae 'November Girl' was also recorded with the band in London (at Lansdowne studios I think). The 2LP 'Strauss' and Sahib Shihab compilations are also hugely recommended and sound brilliant. Get yer Kenny Clarke Francy Boland mega-cool vinyl and CDs 'ere.......
  14. Yes, that's one of the ones I've just ordered. Looking forward to checking it out.
  15. Looks like a different track listing to 'Open Door'. This is one of the few CBBB LPs that I don't have. 'The Turk' is also on 'Sax No End', which is from about the same vintage with Fats Sadi in the lineup also. Don't have the LP in front of me I'm afraid to check the dates. I have a feeling I came across a cheap copy of that Supraphon LP in a London shop some years ago for not a lot of £. I think I must have passed on it having seen 'The Turk' and thinking it was a compilation.
  16. Number 1. would be Victor Feldman.
  17. That 'Mingus 1968' is worth getting hold of just for the sight of Mingus' eviction and the shotgun incident. I usually end up retreating behind the sofa when that is played..
  18. The Ben Webster is really excellent - a fine bio and lots of insight into his time in Holland and Denmark and the expat life. I have a video taken from a 1980s TV showing (I think it is called 'Ben Webster - The Beauty and the Brute') which has lots of excerpts from this documentary feature (interviews with the Dutch landlady etc). 'Beauty and the Brute' runs about 80-90 minutes I think (my tape runs out before the end ). Recommended ! I've actually got two of these Rhapsody DVDs on order from Amazon UK. The 'Sonny Criss LA All Stars' (which has had rave mention on a previous thread) and the film based on Bird's last few months with the Mal Waldron soundtrack. I'll likely order more, starting with Jaki Byard/Elvin Jones. Should get the first 2 over the next few days. The new releases look highly interesting - look forward to seeing them in PAL format shortly (hopefully).
  19. Having stumbled across Vol 2 (which I didn't even realise I had ) I'm going to give these two a spin right now on the video player. Both Cannonball and Nat play just great on Vol 1, Lloyd is no slouch and the crack rythmn section is as tight as a duck' s (pardon my expression) rear orifice.. B-)
  20. Just pulled the videos off the rack, I'd totally forgotten that I had both of them.. :rsmile: Recorded for BBC 12 May 1964. Introduced by Humphrey Lyttleton: Cannonball, Nat, Charles LLoyd, Joe Z, Sam Jones, Louis Hayes. Episode 1: 'Work Song' 'Song My Lady Sings' 'Poor Butterfly' 'Jive Samba' 'Unit Seven' Episode 2: 'The Weaver' 'Bohemia After Dark' 'Come Sunday' 'Sweet Georgia Bright' 'Unit Seven'
  21. There's some great Cannonball on two 'Jazz 625' programs recorded for the BBC and released on video some years ago. I've got one of them. The band has the lineup with Nat, Charles Lloyd and Joe Zawinul. Recorded around 1964 - that show absolutely kicks ass ! Hope this one comes out on DVD at some time, together with the rest of the 'Jazz 625' catalogue.
  22. I remember being served up baby cuttlefish on a Japan Air Lines flight some years ago. Can still picture them there, floating in the soy sauce with their puppy-dog eyes looking up at me. Must admit though, they tasted pretty good ! I'm also a sucker for sea cucumber whenever offered up at Chinese New Year do's. Any scuba divers amongst us will know that when picked up under-water they tend to instantly defecate up their guts. Nice, eh ! Which reminds me, food is almost ready..
