Yeah, it is all about context. Getting access to these recordings was so frustrating back then. Now it is all so accessible in multiple formats. We are spoiled !

Back in 1976 here in the UK it was an issue !

That silver paperback is the original UK edition from 1976. Maybe the other one is a US edition? The silver book covers just modern jazz. The updated vols 1 and 2 (with vol 1 covering up to swing) came many years later.

I bought a new copy of this when I was still at school (needed to specially order it from the local bookseller) using pocket money. It has the silver cover in paperback and cost the best part of £5 when it came out - a small fortune at the time ! Back then it was an invaluable and unique resource and could be frustrating e.g. when referencing rare Blue Note LPs in the US version, long since deleted and seldom seen on our shores by mere mortals. Still have it. Also have the 2 volumes of the updated edition (red and green covers) from much later. I quite like Stuart Nicholson's reviews in the Vol 2. Update - sorry to repeat myself from earlier posts (forgot about them) but I like the book ! It kept its value I guess !

Strangely enough, I bought a copy many years ago and also have yet to get round to reading it !

Never even heard of that one ! Much fun listening to this one over the last couple of days. CD1 with the John Peel shows is a hoot. Might get to CD13 by Xmas..

Saw Lew Tabackin just the once at a California Club (somewhere in the SF Valley). Really nice club, evening and excellent music as I recall. United Jazz and Rock Ensemble on Mood Records - 'Round Seven'.

Miles Davis 'Miles - His New Quintet' (Esquire DG, mono) UK first issue of the Prestige LP 'Miles'.

That's the cover on the version I have. Mintish copy, sounds spectacular. Great as the Horwich CD version is, this LP is definitive.

Just about to give a first spin to the new Basil Kirchin issue on Trunk Records. Two movie soundtracks. The second session was apparently John McLaughlin's last as a session musician before he left to join Miles.

There are usually plenty of them hanging out in my garden staking out the bird life. That's as close as they get.

No way would I allow one anywhere near my place - with the turntable. That - and throwing up hair balls.

Thinking about it, I would probably also add the following: Rebecca Nash Group 'Redefining Element 78' Corrie Dick Quintet Both at the Swanage Jazz Festival and both interesting projects. Also at Swanage - Tony Kofi and Dennis Rollins' excellent 70s Adderley Brothers Tribute.

Well, I guess anyone in Europe (or indeed anywhere outside the US) who buys this set is going to be financially fleeced whichever option they choose. Such is life. The variable is whether you get the set this year or some (currently) indeterminate time next year.

Eric Gale actually made some nice recordings with Quincy Jones in a (slightly) more straight-ahead style. 'Smackwater Jack' has an 'evolution of jazz guitar' thing/suite (called 'Guitar Blues Odyssey I think) where he covers most of the stylistic bases.

Sorry to hear that. Sounds like the Belgian TYQmusic or jazzmessengers might be the way to go for future sets.

It's a good read. I also have his Jon Hendrix book in my 'to read' pile.
