  1. I've just cracked open the LP version of the set but so far, pretty pleased with it. Box and LPs are nicely done, good and easily readable booklet. Spinning 'Mingus Moves' and it sounds crisper and clearer than my old US Atlantic original. Good remastering job by Air Studios - this is a really good set !
  2. Very sad news, if confirmed true. RIP, one of Yorkshire's finest. Saw him just the once but it was that amazing concert with Cecil Taylor and Anthony Braxton in London some years ago.
  3. Very sad news if that is the case.
  4. Seasons greetings all !
  5. Surely in the case of the Byas set you pay VAT and handling charges in the EU and the UK, irrespective of Brexit?
  6. Jogging my memory I remember listening a lot at the time to the earlier Mingus Atlantics so some of these later ones passed me by. Lukewarm reviews in some of the UK jazz press didn't help. Never saw Mingus live (too young!) but I did catch an early Mingus Dynasty with Pullen, Adams, Knepper and Richmond. I think Aladar Pege was on bass.
  7. A bit late but I've gone for a copy of the LP version of this set. Only have 'Moves' on LP and the Changes 1 and 2 on old CDs so it will be worth it. Have to say that I never originally bought 'Cumbia..' onwards due to the widespread negative reviews at the time. In hindsight, a mistake. Should be very good Xmas listening along with the Don Byas set ! This era of Charles Mingus was long overdue a decent reissue. It will be nice to read the booklet in comfortable size without a magnifying glass as well.
  8. I'd still like to see a James Moody Argo/Cadet.
  9. Somewhere in the racks I have a red Storyville LP which I think covers the same Swedish tour.
  10. Result ! I'm in the same boat. Holding back on opening up the box until Xmas !
  11. First photo by Cecil Spiller, taken at the Lighthouse.
  12. Yeah, it is all about context. Getting access to these recordings was so frustrating back then. Now it is all so accessible in multiple formats. We are spoiled !
  13. Back in 1976 here in the UK it was an issue !
  14. That silver paperback is the original UK edition from 1976. Maybe the other one is a US edition? The silver book covers just modern jazz. The updated vols 1 and 2 (with vol 1 covering up to swing) came many years later.
  15. I bought a new copy of this when I was still at school (needed to specially order it from the local bookseller) using pocket money. It has the silver cover in paperback and cost the best part of £5 when it came out - a small fortune at the time ! Back then it was an invaluable and unique resource and could be frustrating e.g. when referencing rare Blue Note LPs in the US version, long since deleted and seldom seen on our shores by mere mortals. Still have it. Also have the 2 volumes of the updated edition (red and green covers) from much later. I quite like Stuart Nicholson's reviews in the Vol 2. Update - sorry to repeat myself from earlier posts (forgot about them) but I like the book ! It kept its value I guess !
  16. Strangely enough, I bought a copy many years ago and also have yet to get round to reading it !
  17. Now in stock at Jazzmessengers.
  18. Never even heard of that one ! Much fun listening to this one over the last couple of days. CD1 with the John Peel shows is a hoot. Might get to CD13 by Xmas..
  19. Saw Lew Tabackin just the once at a California Club (somewhere in the SF Valley). Really nice club, evening and excellent music as I recall. United Jazz and Rock Ensemble on Mood Records - 'Round Seven'.
  20. Ian Carr's Nucleus 'Live at the Theatrehaus' (Mood Records)
  21. Miles Davis 'Miles - His New Quintet' (Esquire DG, mono) UK first issue of the Prestige LP 'Miles'.
  22. That's the cover on the version I have. Mintish copy, sounds spectacular. Great as the Horwich CD version is, this LP is definitive.
  23. Bill Dixon Orchestra 'Intents and Purposes' (RCA Victor Dynagroove)
  24. Nucleus 'Solar Plexus' (Vertigo, swirl)
  25. Just about to give a first spin to the new Basil Kirchin issue on Trunk Records. Two movie soundtracks. The second session was apparently John McLaughlin's last as a session musician before he left to join Miles.
