Art Farmer/Gigi Gryce - 'Music For That Wild Party' (Esquire) Trounces Prestige !

'Miles - His New Quintet' (Esquire) Those 1975/76 UK Impulse releases were good. Put out through 'Anchor Records' I think - I bought a number of them at the time. Although the vinyl was UK, the sleeves were imported from the US.

I find that these LT issues can sound very good indeed, particularly the US pressings. For this reason I have held off buying the 'Infinity' Tone Poet. I think I have most of these LT issues but not 'Step Lightly'.

I think that's my impromptu set of wickets on the right !

No probs. I can confirm that side 2 is pretty nice. Not as 'stately' as the suite in side 1 but classy stuff.

My sentiments too. Based on other publications I have from RMJ this will no doubt be excellent. Just one limited run I think. I eat my previous words !

Side 2 has 5 tracks in a sort of 'third stream' style. Interesting to see that now 98 year old Tony Kinsey is on this LP, on percussion.

Yeah, Never went for those festivals. Not my thing at all.. As a youngster when driving past on the A303 with the family we used to pull in and have a break at the stones. At the time there was no visitor centre, nor were there any barriers preventing access - a free-for-all really. So it seemed pretty natural as a kid to pick out one of the sacred blue stones from the Prescili Mountains and use it as a wicket. Just the right height !! Discogs seems to have a nice NM copy from a UK dealer of 'Stonehenge'. Probably worth the £175..(gulp).

I've capitulated and ordered a copy ! Looking forward to it...

Having spent a wonderful few hours this afternoon at this location (without being flooded out too !) there's only one record to spin.. It's never been the same though since the days (circa 1970) of playing cricket with tennis ball against the stones. 😮

Sad news - RIP. I remember him mainly for his section playing on the Miles/Gil albums but also for those 60s/70s Mitchell/Ruff Duo recordings.

Woody Shaw/Louis Hayes 'The Tour - Vol 1' (High Note)

Kirk played our small local club (alas no more) around 15 years ago now with his 'British' touring trio (he lives in France I think). As well as being an absolute gent, signing his latest CD and happily chatting with me about stuff such as the Chet Baker Prestige dates, he was such a cheery, positive spirit. Enjoyment of life just leeches from him ! The other time I saw him was as part of Charles Tolliver's orchestra in London. He played Smalls last year so here's hoping he gets back there at some stage and we can all watch it on the feed. I remember him playing 'Estate' on that club date. Also that great tune of his 'Habiba'. Thinking about it, I think he signed a couple of my Baker Prestige CDs. Will have to check !

That and the 'To Duke With Love' album are superb. Can't go wrong with the classic Cedar Walton Trio. Spinning CD1 of the new Mosaic - 'Classic Don Byas Sessions 1944-46'. Musically very strong and in excellent sound. A winner !

Always managed to avoid it - although an old Scottish friend of mine ordered it in a Quebec restaurant during a dive trip there and apparently ordered a 'lady of the night' thanks to mispronunciation ! Much hilarity around the table with that one.

Indeed. He features a fair bit on 'Jazz In Britain', not least because his wonderful tape archive was bequeathed to them. 'No Blues - Live at the Hopbine 1965' actually captures Mathewson's first appearance with Tubby Hayes. He slotted in immediately, to Tubby's surprise (not knowing who he was).

Stan Sultzmann Quartet 'On Loan With Gratitude' (Jazz In Britain 2CDs)

There was some good film footage of him in action there in that 'Ronnie's' documentary with Stan Tracey and Rick Laird also in the house rhythmn section. If my memory is right (and that concert definitely left an imprint) the collective intensity these guys were generating had me thinking they were about to self-levitate at one stage. Extraordinary.

I go for both but preference for LP if it is a good issue due to spec of the deck. Both formats are great.

The original Liberty LP was always pretty elusive and often with clipped corner sleeve. This new LP probably trounces it on sonics and the sleeve plus inner photos (Mosaic's old collection being put to good use) makes it definitive- at least in terms of LP issue. The Japanese CD would be great too.

Also an impressive recent Tone Poet LP.
