  1. Dipping into Steve Isoardi's 'Central Avenue Sounds' (signed by some of the participants) and the Horace Tapscott bio 'Songs of the Unsung'.
  2. Happy Birthday George ! Few musicians have given me such listening pleasure over the years, both recorded and live. First solo of his I heard I think was on Miles' 'Seven Steps to Heaven'.
  3. Damn, yet more bad news. RIP - a fine lead player, I first became aware of him via his work with Clark Terry's Big Bad Band.
  4. Sorry to hear that - RIP. Really appreciated his 'Reel' releases.
  5. Clifford Thornton New Art Ensemble 'Freedom & Unity' (Goody) David Mack 'New Directions' (Columbia Lansdowne, mono)
  6. The UK original pressings would have been done at Decca New Malden (as were Tempos) and these usually sound great, with good quality vinyl used. I've got the Shake Keane 'Dig !' in this series - not his greatest session with somewhat cheesy period backing by Ivor Raymonde and his Orchestra but sonically it is fine.
  7. Coleman Hawkins 'Wrapped Tight' (UK HMV mono) from JHR's last list perhaps? Did anyone pick up the Alan Skidmore?
  8. Really!? That's rare. I went through two visually mint copies of this one until I gave up and got a mint Japanese issue on Sony that has no clicks or pops whatsoever. For some reason I had better luck with my UK issue of "four compositions" which only has a few isolated pops... Most of mine have the occasional clicks and pops apart from the Frank Ricotti, which is near mint. That one was a good deal at £15 from Mole Jazz. Having said that, I prefer to listen to all of these on the 1990s reissue CDs - sound is usually superior to the Realm LPs.
  9. ... But pleased to confirm I caught a gig by him and also had a chat a few years later. Even got to ask him about the Chet Baker sessions. A nice guy !
  10. Happy Birthday Big Al, wherever you are..
  11. This is on my list - along with 'Flight For Four'. I purchased the Mosaic Select not having heard much of either artist (although I saw Bobby play in LA once) and was pleasantly suprised. This is good stuff !
  12. Bobby Columby Jules Columby Jules Oliver
  13. RIP - He certainly left a very significant impact on jazz.
  14. 'Nancy Wilson/Cannonball Adderley' (UK Columbia/Capitol, stereo).
  15. Chico O'Farrill 'Nine Flags' (Impulse orange/black, stereo) Obscure ringer from the Impulse catalogue - stunning !
  16. John Coltrane 'Crescent' (UK HMV, mono)
  17. Idle, Bradford? Billy Idol Captain Sensible Genesis P. Orridge
  18. Jimmy Cleveland pretty much steals the show from CT on this LP, imho. 10 year reminder to me to give this one a spin !
  19. Fats Navarro/Tadd Dameron 'New Trends of Jazz' (Savoy DG 10") Absolute classic.
  20. I second Ed's review of the Oscar Peterson Mosaic. I've only spun it once or twice but did enjoy it. If you like the Teddy Wilson set you are probably going to like this one too. Straight-ahead swinging music, nicely presented by Mosaic. Not essential but glad I got it !
  21. James Maddren certainly appearing all over the place with Ant Law, Compassionate Dictatorship etc. Excellent, versatile player !
  22. Very sad news - RIP. A good guy !
