  1. I don’t recall this early album of his ever getting a CD reissue -
  2. That ICA album is a bit ‘way out’ for my liking (have it on CD). Most of his stuff is really good though.
  3. Sad news, may he RIP. A stellar member of Clarke-Boland Band, a lineup of greats and strongly featured on most of their albums but also contributed much, much more. I enjoyed seeing him with Norma Winstone and John Taylor, over 30 years ago now. I recall he did a duo tour with pianist John Horler some years before the lockdown. Sadly, didn’t get to see it.
  4. Miles Davis ‘Night-Crawler’. Massey Hall, Toronto, Feb 1990.
  5. The good news is that this material should hopefully be on the forthcoming Sonny Clark Mosaic.
  6. Yes, that 1980 McCoy Tyner Sextet was a great one. The lineup I saw was slightly later I think but had Joe Ford, John Blake, John Lee and Wilby Fletcher. I think they did ‘The Seeker’ too and another one I remember was ‘Just Feelin’ ‘. Best performance I ever saw from McCoy and some of the greatest piano playing I saw, ever. Wasn’t aware that Abercrombie was on ‘electric mandoline’, I’d always assumed it was just guitar. You are right though, that’s what the sleeve says. Arthur Blythe sounding amazingly like Benny Carter on his ballad feature.
  7. Yes, ‘Hot House’ was put out I think by the people who ran Mole Jazz at the time. They also did a recording of Nathan Davis ‘London By Night’ so I guess this reissue was set up as a consequence. I find that the Mole pressings tend to be rolled off quite a bit at the top end. The Tubbys are flawed in that respect - albeit very welcome when they came out.
  8. Yeah, I’ve often thought that Cedar makes a silk purse out of a sow’s ear for that one though, which adds to the overall charm and ambience of the session.
  9. That ‘Cedar!’ album on Prestige is a beauty. Some lovely late work by Dorham (and Walton) on that one.
  10. They are still musically active - next gig is at Dartington Hall, Devon in about a week’s time. That 70’s appearance must have been by the ‘Brass Band’ I guess? (apologies for thread derailment).
  11. Barnfield Theatre, Exeter, UK
  12. That will reduce the numbers count, for sure ! I think there’s probably a fair chance that JazzMessengers will get it in as well.
  13. Thanks to BillF, once again, for this CD. Heath had a great talent for small band arranging which sounds much bigger than it is - shrewd use of players such as Julius Watkins. Without exception, his albums swing like crazy too. All of the Riversides by him are good and he certainly belongs with Grice, Golson etc. in that pantheon. Heath’s tunes were also popular with British hard boppers in the 1960s, rightly so. That Garland LP is on MPS, as I recall. Don’t have it but do have ‘Auf Wiedersehen’. More Jimmy..
  14. I did a drive from Northern Alberta to Saskatoon many years ago. Lots of grain elevators but didn’t see a hill the whole day !
  15. How about the ‘Pure Pleasure’ releases. Presumably these are legit?
  16. Remember buying that one as a French Pathe Marconi DMM and thinking how brilliant it was.
  17. Happy Birthday Mr Haynes ! Just reading about him today in an old Downbeat mag from over 60 years ago. He was sort of a veteran even then !
  18. The track 'Jive Hoot' was included in one of the earliest jazz compilations I ever heard, one put out by CBS on the budget UK 'Embassy' label. I think it is the best track on the album.
  19. Just noticed that for some of the later issues, the PDF seems to cut out before the later pages, including the live reviews. A shame. For the earlier years, doesn't seem to be a problem. Nice that the Yearbooks are included.
