  1. Maybe the Poole Lighthouse gig I saw was in 2003 as well. That feels about the right timeframe I think. That was the gig I ‘hijacked’ him near the band bus to sign some LPs.
  2. My shipment now declared officially ‘MIA’ and Mosaic have shipped out a replacement. Looking forward !
  3. Wish they would release offers like this over this side of the pond !
  4. Mosaic - CDs 1 and 2. Parker/Gillespie with Red Norvo and Slam Stewart !
  5. Everything about the production of that programme was sort of odd. I agree that it had more of a Barbican look to it, although there is an online review from 2001 which says RFH. I’m still not sure I was at that performance but around that time I did see Wayne and co. at Poole Lighthouse, so might have been part of the same tour. I’ll have to see if I can find the old concert tickets. It turns out that this show was originally made for the ‘BBC Knowledge’ channel, a short lived entity that preceded BBC4. Probably originally broadcast once at some impossible hour, which would explain why I never saw it at the time. Might also explain the slapdash tune titling.
  6. Definitely RFH in 2001, according to this program. They got the tune titling wrong on the first number - not ‘Sanctuary’ but ‘Chief Crazy Horse’ I think. Nice to see that snippet of Weather Report film with Eric Gravatt on drums.
  7. Would have missed this but for a chance check of the TV listings. I guess this must have been originally broadcast back in 2001, hadn’t previously seen it. My recollection is that Wayne played a fair bit of tenor but was possibly a bit ‘underpowered’ at times on the blowing front. Maybe the sound didn’t help. * * - Updated to say that my recollections are of the Barbican performance, which according to the Internet was 2006, was definitely at that one. If this 2001 gig was at the RFH, not entirely sure if I was at that one. How frustrating !
  8. Good to point out that ‘Zeitgeist’ album. It came and went very quickly when it was released, around 1974/75. I have a copy of the LP and that is another one to dig out.
  9. For anyone who can pick up UK BBC4, there is a broadcast of Wayne Shorter at the London Jazz Festival (presumably Barbican) tonight (Sunday 19 March) at 9.10 pm (half an hour).
  10. I think that tour of Coe/Horler was in about 2010-2012. Literally they did a countryside Festival performance just down the road from me and somehow managed to miss it. Regretting that now. I think I saw him also at one of the Swange fests in the 2000s as part of a bigger lineup but have forgotten the specifics.
  11. From the Milestone box.
  12. Review of the set on the London Jazz News site.. https://londonjazznews.com/2023/03/18/classic-jazz-at-the-philharmonic-jam-sessions-1950-1957/ Still waiting..🙁
  13. I’ve actually got an LP copy of it, will dig out this weekend. Not Philips Art Dept.’s greatest hour. Cousin of the Late Her Maj. ? That review is bizarre - the last tune I would consider ‘seldom heard’ is ‘St Thomas’ !
  14. CDs 3 and 4 from the Henderson Complete Milestone Box.
  15. I don’t recall this early album of his ever getting a CD reissue -
  16. That ICA album is a bit ‘way out’ for my liking (have it on CD). Most of his stuff is really good though.
  17. Sad news, may he RIP. A stellar member of Clarke-Boland Band, a lineup of greats and strongly featured on most of their albums but also contributed much, much more. I enjoyed seeing him with Norma Winstone and John Taylor, over 30 years ago now. I recall he did a duo tour with pianist John Horler some years before the lockdown. Sadly, didn’t get to see it.
  18. Miles Davis ‘Night-Crawler’. Massey Hall, Toronto, Feb 1990.
  19. The good news is that this material should hopefully be on the forthcoming Sonny Clark Mosaic.
  20. Yes, that 1980 McCoy Tyner Sextet was a great one. The lineup I saw was slightly later I think but had Joe Ford, John Blake, John Lee and Wilby Fletcher. I think they did ‘The Seeker’ too and another one I remember was ‘Just Feelin’ ‘. Best performance I ever saw from McCoy and some of the greatest piano playing I saw, ever. Wasn’t aware that Abercrombie was on ‘electric mandoline’, I’d always assumed it was just guitar. You are right though, that’s what the sleeve says. Arthur Blythe sounding amazingly like Benny Carter on his ballad feature.
  21. Yes, ‘Hot House’ was put out I think by the people who ran Mole Jazz at the time. They also did a recording of Nathan Davis ‘London By Night’ so I guess this reissue was set up as a consequence. I find that the Mole pressings tend to be rolled off quite a bit at the top end. The Tubbys are flawed in that respect - albeit very welcome when they came out.
  22. Yeah, I’ve often thought that Cedar makes a silk purse out of a sow’s ear for that one though, which adds to the overall charm and ambience of the session.
  23. That ‘Cedar!’ album on Prestige is a beauty. Some lovely late work by Dorham (and Walton) on that one.
