  1. Is it just me or is 'Jazzwise' getting very diluted these days? Scanned the latest copy in 'Ray's' yesterday but was undewhelmed with the jazz content and didn't bother buying it. Likewise 'Jazz Journal' - half of that was 'Critics Polls'. More meat required !

  3. Thanks for posting. An interesting and moving portrait.
  4. Damn, sorry to hear this. Really enjoy those PJ sessions on the Mosaic Select Pacific Jazz Trios. RIP Mr Fischer.

  7. Moving swiftly on... The 'Britten' film should be interesting tonight. Followed on by that Beatles Stateside documentary and 'How The Brits Rocked America', should be a good night of viewing on BBC4.

  9. Er.....(ahem)....no. Never said I was 'waiting' for it'. In fact, didn't even know that this DVD existed until this week.
  10. The later Cedar Walton 'Eastern Rebellion' LPs on Timeless (in particular, 'IV')
  11. It was issued on DVD a few years ago so you needn't have waited so long! It is also on youtube as are the other Russell bio-pics. Yes, noticed that. Seems to be OOP at the likes of Amazon though and at £50 a shot from the Marketplace, no thanks. It would have been nice to get to hear the BBC commentary though. It seems that the 'Elgar' is available on I-Player but couldn't find the 'Delius'. Wonder why (rights issue?)
  12. Now that they've got the stamp sorted out - whatever happened to the film?
  13. Yeah - It's one of the best things I've ever seen on the BBC, without a doubt. That lead performance from Max Adrian was something else. Apparently Eric Fenby was involved in the making of this and when he saw the end product he had something of a nervous breakdown as it was so realistic. Imagine having to transcribe those scores at lightning speed with Delius singing off-key and also having to take into account German conventions on 'quarter note' definitions etc - all the while getting a constant b*llocking for transcribing it wrong.
  14. Have to say that - although 'Bantu Village' is a pleasant listen (I have it on LP), it isn't one of those Blue Notes that I would lose sleep over not having. Not a patch on the Blue Mitchell Blue Note sessions that are in the Mosaic box. Good that the Soul Brother guys in Putney have resurrected it though.
  15. I have to say that that Ken Russell Delius film last night was outstanding - they just don't make them like that any more, to quote a phrase. Glad I recorded it (next to be broadcast sometime after 2050, no doubt..) There's no doubt that Ken Russell's very best work was on these BBC musical drama-docs. Black and white photography worked in its favour too. Outstanding ! I see there was a cameo by Russell as the groping priest in the church too. Turned out that was based on fact !

  19. Nope !
  20. Last time I saw George Coleman he was 'in tandem' with Johnny Griffin. Sadly, one of the last performances of the Little Giant over here.
  21. I thought Miles was the policeman and Sting interjected a bit of 'cod French' into the intro?
  22. OK - his band is/were not exactly renowned for their 'harmonic complexities'. That should give it away !
  23. Saw him in 1979 too ! He had Herbie Lewis on bass, plus Hilton and Billy in the quartet (I think I mentioned this in an earlier post). George's playing was masterful on the couple of occasions I saw him then (as was Mr Higgins) - I remember he started one of the sets off with his composition 'Free Flow' (which is on Lee Morgan's 'The Procrastinator' CD) and it was an absolute tour de force in terms of tenor technique. Much of the rest of the material played was from the 'Amsterdam After Dark' LP which they had either just recorded - or were about to record, on that tour.
