  1. Recommendation from me for the Oliver Nelson set. I particularly like the 'Kennedy Tribute' and the Jazzhattan Suite (hope that's what it's called, can't be bothered to open the box ). The Buddy Rich is good too so I'd go for both of them !
  2. Yes, they were a bit of rarity in the UK - Tower UK was probably the best UK source of them - but as you say they were very expensive. Quite a few I ended up getting from Tower in the US (nothing like going to the 'horses mouth') e.g the Konitz Motion. A few, like the Lalo Schifrin and Alan Shorter, required a major internet trawl to get hold of. It eluded me too - but rest assured I won't bid.

  4. He knows his stuff, for sure. The one 'chat' I did catch with him was his interview at RFH with Charles Tolliver several years ago (before the Tolliver Big Band performance) - very well done. Since then, I've also caught his Cannonball Adderley Civil Rights/'70s' talk. Thanks John - I'll rest easier now. How can one possible write an article on Cuscuna/Mosaic and limit it to just the one page? I'd fill the whole mag.
  5. Good place - have seen some nice concerts there, including 2 consecutive nights of Cecil Taylor solo (which particularly stands out).
  6. Damn - why don't we ever get stuff like that over here ! Best I could find in London last week was a copy of 'The Flam' - but at £15 I passed. Stuck to CDs instead.
  7. Soft Machine 'Fourth' (UK CBS 2LP)

  12. I gave up on both these publications some time ago. I found I could get more information about jazz from being a member of this forum! Totally agree ! Plus the fact that it now costs best part of a fiver each. Having said that, they are a bargain compared with the rail ticket I ended up buying yesterday (just under £100, plus I wasn't going to Mars ). One of the Jazz Journals before Xmas had an article on Michael Cuscuna and Mosaic. Unfortunately I wasn't able to get hold of it. Anyone manage to pick up a copy and able to comment on it?

  15. Is it just me or is 'Jazzwise' getting very diluted these days? Scanned the latest copy in 'Ray's' yesterday but was undewhelmed with the jazz content and didn't bother buying it. Likewise 'Jazz Journal' - half of that was 'Critics Polls'. More meat required !

  17. Thanks for posting. An interesting and moving portrait.
  18. Damn, sorry to hear this. Really enjoy those PJ sessions on the Mosaic Select Pacific Jazz Trios. RIP Mr Fischer.

  21. Moving swiftly on... The 'Britten' film should be interesting tonight. Followed on by that Beatles Stateside documentary and 'How The Brits Rocked America', should be a good night of viewing on BBC4.

  23. Er.....(ahem)....no. Never said I was 'waiting' for it'. In fact, didn't even know that this DVD existed until this week.
  24. The later Cedar Walton 'Eastern Rebellion' LPs on Timeless (in particular, 'IV')
