Too bad that Art Pepper Mosaic Select and the Pacific Jazz Trios (for ubu) didn't resurface !

Attending that auction and $600 netted me the entire set of wooden LP frames depicting the covers of the 1993 Savoy re-issue program. Thanks for posting that - some half-way familiar things there (e.g. the country singer pic and Rush sign) and congrats with the framed Savoy pics. Last time I was in that store must have been circa 1993. Always worth a look, as was the place next door. Back then, Sams still had a viable vinyl section too. I remember around the time of my last visit there was an article in the Globe & Mail on Wayne Shorter, then touring TO, and he was photographed scanning the racks in Sams !

Delving into the Japanese racks today: Chet Baker 'One Upon A Syummertime' (Japanese Artists House) plus: Chet Baker/George Coleman/Kirk Lightsey 'Smokin'' (SABA, stereo - Van Gelder in the runout)

I also quite like the recreation of 'Birth Of The Cool' on GRP. Enough of the original players to capture some of the original and a bit more fidelity than the original. Plus Mel Torme !

I put it down to enjoying John Dankworth's theme to 'Tomorrows World' when a wee sprog watching 1960s TV (I think Kenny Wheeler was doing the flugel bit)

There was a fantastic Verve twofer from the mid/late 90s that included all of the Mulligan/Webster material, with alternates. Probably long OOP now though. My favourite Mulligan was actually a series of 3 UK Verve vinyl issues - 'Gerry Mulligan Meets The Sax Giants, Vols 1-2', which compiles the 50s material with Desmond, Hodges and Getz over 3 albums. The CBS session 'What Is There To Say' with Art Farmer is well worth seeking out too. As is the now OOP Mosaic with the Concert Jazz Band material.

'Jazz In Exile', fine documentary from 1982 with lots of footage of Dexter Gordon, Woody Shaw, Richard Davis, Phil Woods etc. Also lots of footage of Buddy Rich appearances with big band and in person from the Mike Douglas TV show. Agree - one of the best movies of recent years. I believe they actually used the 'real set' of the main interrogation centre (Hohenschonhausen, Berlin - you can visit it as a tourist). Intrigued to see mention of the forthcoming release of this one by the Rendell/Carr Group on Roger's tribute site: Live At The Union The write-up mentions that it was recorded at the UCL Union Jazz Club back in the 60s, which was also apparently the rehearsal home of the New Jazz Orchestra at the time. Would that be the UCL Union main bar location (Gordon St I think)? If so - wow ! I have sunk the occasional pint or three in there without having even the slightest idea that this was UK jazz 'hallowed ground'. Michael Garrick was a UCL Grad (English Lit?), as was Shake Keane so I guess either of these guys may have set up the arrangement. There's a good stage at ULU though on Malet St - maybe that was the location? Nice to see that a vinyl will be forthcoming via Stamford Audio - will be snapping that one up.

I found my 'Latin Bit' in a UK bin - mono, first presss, £2 A few bumps and scrapes but it sounds pretty damn good.

A bit of noodling and excess of patchoulie oil wafting in the air in some of the later sessions but Joe's playing is never less than very good. I agree that the playing quality exceeds that on the Verve sessions and is only bettered by his Blue Notes.

Good point. Daxie, please check out my thread re: the Ian Carr Tribute Concert at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, South Bank, on Feb 23rd. A whole raft of great UK names will be appearing in recognition of Ian - Michael Garrick, Norma Winstone, Ray Russell, Tim Whitehead, Nicki Yeo, past members of Nucleus, Guy Barker. And I expect the crowd congregating in the bar at half time will look like a 'who's who' of British Jazz.
