Looks like my stay in Philly this time is panning out to be a short one, with limited 'window of opportunity' for catching gigs. On the plus side, there will likely be future trips with more opportunity to catch a gig or two, at leisure, to come I want to check out the Coltrane and Sun Ra houses..

A frequent visitor to Canada ! (I saw him in the audience in a Toronto club once).

Maybe it was orchestrated for that Miles Davis/Gil Evans Berkeley performance in 1968? ('Falling Water' was from that year I think) - too bad that no audio evidence has been found in the vaults for the Berkeley performance (I believe Bob Belden has confirmed this).

An arrangement for a Miles/Gil Evans orchestra collaboration? Looks very much like the instrumentation for that 'Falling Water' session.

There's also the single 1969 performance at Ronnie Scotts - which was even recorded and broadcast by the BBC (and subsequently lost/wiped ) although the audio does appear on the 'Lost Quintet' tree. David Redfern also took some fine photos of this gig.

Sad news and his presence on the UK jazz scene will be very much missed . A series of fabulous big bands from the 50s through to the 70s in particular and some great big band albums on Fontana and Philips (of which 'Windmill Tilter' is my favourite). Anyone around in this country in the 60s and 70s in particular will have had their sound world from TV very much influenced by his tunes. It was good though that he remained very much active on the concert scene with Dame Cleo, Jacqui and Alec Dankworth over the past few years. 'Windmill Tilter' and 'Full Circle' will be put on the deck in tribute today. RIP Sir John and sympathies to Dame Cleo and family.

Anyone seen that 'Don Byas In America' documentary put together in 1970 by Dutch TV? Includes great footage of Byas with the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra at the Village Vanguard plus Don in action at Newport that year and wandering through downtown NYC. I believe it was his first visit to perform back in the USA since 1947.
