  1. Available for view through BBC I-Player - not sure if this can be accessed outside the UK. See link at top of this thread. Good to see that MJQ broadcast again. And to be reminded of how truly fine musicians all 4 of these guys (sadly no longer with us) were - beautifully arranged music, immaculately played. Plus the added bonus of Laurindo Almeida as guest. Love that bit on the bossa-nova number where 'Bags' lets loose on his solo, almost like he'd been let loose to stretch out at last. Have seen the Blakey with Morgan and Gilmore many times now but it never fails to knock me out also. Anyone notice how they dubbed in a second or so of 'The Egyptian' right at the end of the last number (maybe there was a sound drop-out problem on the recording?)
  2. Val Wilmer Barney Rubble William Jefferson Clintstone
  3. Val Wilmer - esteemed UK photographer and jazz writer. She interviewed many of the big names in the 1960s and 70s in particular. Also took some wonderful photos of Coltrane. The Jimmy Heath book promises to be great. It will be interesting to read what he has to say about Coltrane and also the 60s period working for Blue Note and Riverside.
  4. Sounds good - but hopefully Music Matters will do a 2x45rpm stereo issue of 'Evolution' at some stage !
  5. 'RVG Stereo' sounds like it might be one of those Liberty 2nd pressings from around 1967. I've just checked a mono original and it's 'Van Gelder' and 'ear' for this one. The thickness of the vinyl will probably be a giveaway as to whether or not this one is a Liberty. The first issue is a nice thick Plastylite pressing. In any case, I'll bet it sounds great.
  6. A thoughtfull Ed Thigpen obit in today's Daily Telegraph: Ed Thigpen Obit
  7. Thanks - I'll keep a look out for them. I have a good copy of 'Evolution' NY mono pressing so will pass on that particular one but I'll look out for the Herbie 'Dimensions & Inventions'. I've stayed away from those US Scorpio pressings that are everywhere in the shops though, based on feedback from trusted listeners..
  8. Blue Mitchell Complete Blue Note, CD1
  9. Some nice footage of him on the 'Jazzin' The Black Forest' DVD playing with the OP trio at the home of HG Brunner-Schwer. I'll dig it out over the weekend. 'Out Of The Storm' was one of the best of the Verve Elite Series reissues and a great concept album !
  10. Sorry to hear this Soul Stream. Hang on in there - it will get better. And spin some more Big John Patton !
  11. You jammy get, as we say in England.... Quite! Give it 6 months chaps and we can do the same..
  12. Nigel Tuffnell Jack Bruce Jaco Pastorius
  13. Dick Dastardly Mutley Penelope Pittstop
  14. Sad news - another 'not a good day' for jazz. RIP.
  15. That's the best bet - also send them a copy of your receipt (or Amazon sales invoice). Not to forget also that this was a ridiculously young guy at the time he joined the band who could get away with murder by taking a few liberties. I'm sure Miles liked that aspect of his playing (probably got very much the same effect with Michael Henderson on the bass a few years later). The Tony Williams from the 70s onwards was a different drummer in many respects - much louder, a more 'conservative' player and more empasis on the bass drum with hyper-active foot pedal. Very heavy sticks too. My hearing's never been the same since standing in front of his kit back in 1990 .
  16. Shocking news from Haiti - and certainly puts the economic problems of the West into truer context.
  17. Sad new - RIP Not particularly a fan but a fine voice for sure, sorry to hear of his tough time since the early 80s. Certainly remember hearing about those female underwear vollies in the earlier times.
  18. Good to hear. Nothing sent to me yet tho
  19. Yet more sad news - and one of the most 'musical' drummers in jazz . Always liked his work with Oscar and the 'Out of the Storm' session. I'll give that one a spin - RIP. He was based in Copenhagen for many years I think - certainly since the mid-70s and the 'Action Reaction' band.
  20. I saw the performance with the Belmondos at NorthSea some years ago (2005?) - it was a highlight of the festival. Heck, even watching him dismantling his horns and packing them away was great.
  21. Champion Jack Dupree (London LTZ-K 15IT1) Ah - those were the days. London label, deep groove, silver text on maroon label.
  22. Hopefully the replacement boxes will be sent out to the pre-Xmas purchase brigade over the next few weeks !
  23. Dudley Moore Peter Cooke E L Wisty
