  1. Happy Birthday !

    Ian Carr RIP

Thinking about it, I've got the feeling that Ian was in the lineup for George Russell's 75th performance at the Barbican, which was probably the only time I ever saw him live. Must have been one of his last performances - and that was 5+ years ago.
  3. I picked up the February edition the other day and had noticed the news on AAJ that Janet Cook had died and that the magazine was closing. The February edition is actually quite good, with a review of Herbie Hancock on Blue Note. Used to subscribe back in the 1970s and early 1980s.
  4. Methinks that free CD bundle gift enticement will be an absolute damp squib for most on here. Unless they print up some Tyrone Washington 'Train Wrecks', Unissued Wayne Shorter 1970s sessions etc. Another CD of 'The Sidewinder' I don't want.
  5. No Gerald Wilson Big Band?

    Ian Carr RIP

    'Direct Hits' it is.
  7. Sorry for the panic attack, Bob. Just thought that exchange rate could be even crapper soon which is why I also order the Hackett. I keep forgetting to go for surface shipping though. Arrrgh. No problem Yves. For a minute I thought the Hackett was on 'Last Chance'. The £ can't get much lower - or can it? PS just heard that my bundle is on its way.

    Ian Carr RIP

Also worth mentioning just how great his book on '70s contemporary UK jazz 'Music Outside' is (recently replublished by Northway Books). Written with true insight and not a wasted page in it.
  9. Ian Carr tribute tonight: Rendell/Carr Quintet 'Live' (Columbia Lansdowne stereo) Nucleus 'Alley Cat' (Vertigo) Nucleus 'Elastic Rock' (BGO Reissue)

    Ian Carr RIP

As mentioned on the Ian Carr tribute site, it's somewhat astonishing that Ian, Guy Warren and Blossom Dearie (the latter two who recorded with Ian to good effect) all passed away within a very short period.
  11. I remember picking up a cheap 10+LP box sets of Monk Riverside and Bill Evans Riverside (German pressings) and cheapo Coltrane German reissues on Impulse many years ago. Also very good for those nice 'Mood' LPs by Wolfgang Dauner, Ack van Rooyen etc.
  12. No probs - I should be flying in on Saturday all being well. After dumping my bags I'll high-tail it down to 'The Collector' and the various LP/CD outlets in the vicinity of The Little Widdler. The museums can wait until Sunday.

    Ian Carr RIP

I'm totally gutted by this news. As well as being a huge fan of Nucleus and Rendell/Carr I got to meet him on one occasion at the Barbican. Very down to earth, astonishingly modest re: his albums and instantly likeable. It was obvious at the time that he wasn't well but it was only afterwards reading his bio that I realised how serious his health problems were. A true giant of our UK scene - may he rest in peace. I always liked his writings and TV programmes on Miles too. His Miles bio is still the best. Thanks for passing on the sad news Roger.
  14. Time to relax - ordered the Lee/Christie and also sneaked in a Charles Lloyd Mosaic Single. Haven't gone for the priority next day delivery air mail personal jet individual courier option to Bristol, slow banana boat packet steamer option to Dorset will suffice. When it arrives it arrives !

  16. O hang on - the Hackett is not on last chance. False alarm, I can stay within tightwad cheap shipping limit.
  17. Damn - I completely forgot about the Hackett. Oh well, there goes the $100 cheap shipping threshold.. Thank you for causing a run on my £ Yves
  18. Thanks for the recommendations re: Brussels. Sounds like I should instead fly on to Munich (I also remember that they have a good zweitausendeins, bought vinyl there decades ago ). I'll try to check out 'The Collector' in Belgium if I can. I wonder if they are open on Sundays?
  19. I also love the crowd/bar noise on the Miles Blackhawk set. Especially that bar blender! Maybe I should record a couple of hours of bar noise. I can do that right here in Whitehall and probably get releases from all the drunks involved. Shouldn't be too difficult to overlay this stuff on my master tapes. The digital world is nifty. No, shouldn't be all that difficult to pull off. Problem though is that unlike the sort of low key background crowd noise we're talking about, I'm not sure the inebriated chorus of 'yo, baby, take it off!' ... 'whaddaya mean it's $50 for a lap dance??' and 'Randy, quick, grab her orbs!!!' that you'll be recording in your local hangout is quite what we had in mind. Try it though....let's see? I'd buy it. And with the 12x12 black book to provide the track-by-track annotation details. Awesome !
  20. Looks like I'll be in Brussels for a few days on business next week. Hope to sneek a few minutes of vinyl scouring in if the chance presents itself (will be on foot and hopefully in the central area and not the boondocks). Any suggestions for jazz vinyl meccas in the city - or good CD outlets? (shame the £ is so crap.) Thanks !
