An informative obit here from The Times. Times Obit I'm sure I saw a TV programme many years ago with him, Ginger Baker and others jamming in an African village. Would love to see that again.

Yes chewy, excellent mucic. At the time of that twofer release that session with Coleman, Farrell and Frank Foster was previously unreleased. The whole set was a revelation for me when I bought it back in 1978 - Elvin's playing like a man posesssed and his sound is finely captured. I agree that the lack of piano really brings his playing into focus - and the percussion interaction with Candido is really good. The session has since been issued on CD as part of the OOP Mosaic set, of course. Reminder to self - put the Elvin Mosaic set on the I-Pod !

Yeah - saw that one too when it came out. At the cinema ! Very informative documentary with quite a bit of footage of Clara Rockmore 'in action'.

Wow, this is a fine and rare one. with Frank Butler and Jimmy Bond Yep, it's very good - has been sat in my racks collecting dust. Far too good for that. Cost me about £7-8 I think !

I picked up one of those Black Lions (the one with the red cover) back in the day, still have it somewhere. My copy of the Mosaic is on CD, pretty happy with the sound.

Just played the first side. Yes, low key but an enjoyable listen - his own compositions featured too. His style reminds me a bit of Jack Wilson, although there's some classical influences in there and maybe a smidgen of Ramsey Lewis.

Woops.. Paul Moers Trio 'The Contemorary Jazz Classics Of..' (Japanese Del Fi, mono I think)

I have a Japanese 'clone' vinyl of that one (just found it). Trio with Jimmy Bond on bass and Frank Butler on drums. Will have to re-aquaint myself with it, then I'll report back.

Still got the two Electra Musician vinyls (they have inner liner notes too I think) and of all the live releases I've heard of this Shaw/Turre lineup, I think these best capture the stunning impact of the group in live performance.

The Japanese 'Procrastinator' and 'The Rajah' are both pretty rare I think. Didn't Dan have a copy of the Toshiba 'Procrastinator' in his 'stupendous' sale? In any event, it's an excellent sounding release - and nice to have the George Coleman/Priester session on the same disk too.
