  1. Also apparently on a lot of ‘late night lineup’ type BBC2 programmes as well as lots on BBC Radio. Anything with ‘Midnight’ in the title. Plus the two ‘Jazz 625’ broadcasts, one with Tubby Hayes Orchestra, which the BBC in their infinite wisdom managed to destroy.
  2. Never realised that Mark Murphy was on UK TV so much during the 60s. Appeared on the Benny Hill show (!) as well as kiddies TV on the ‘5 O’Clock Club’. Might well have caught that ! Apparently he also featured as the cabaret act on the Miss United Kingdom Show in Blackpool in 1969 and was also on an episode of the ‘Golden Shot’ in 1970. Bernie, the bolt !
  3. A very good read. There’s a couple of paragraphs covering 60s gigs at Club 43 with Ernie Garside, during the period he lived in South Kensington (not as salubrious then as now).
  4. Yes, no need to bother with Tone Poet on this one.
  5. That album ‘Midnight Mood’ with a Clarke/Boland Group is great too. Must check out some of the material on Muse. I have ‘Rah’ on a UK Riverside, must dig out. The same author also did a fine bio of Jon Hendricks. Looking forward to it, should be arriving within the next hour.
  6. Same here. The Monk Riverside and the Bill Evans Riverside and Fantasy sets too. Oh - and the wonderful Coltrane Prestige. Plethora of riches !
  7. Didn’t that Hill/Rivers gig end up with a fracas on stage? Funnily enough on the one time I got to chat with Sam I mentioned that Band/gig with Hill and he certainly remembered it.
  8. Enjoyed this one today - what a fine final run he had with these Mack Avenue release.
  9. They need to get their act together and crank the hype factor back up to 11..
  10. Very sad news, may he RIP. Sad that he was troubled with the pain of trimegial neuralgia in latter years, that is an awful condition. Seems like only yesterday that as a youngster he was making those albums with Tony Williams.
  11. King version. I’d forgotten I had this one ! Sonics are very good.
  12. Yes, that would be a good one. Came out as a Conn on vinyl with the ‘Wally’ in the runout. Unfortunately I think it was included in one of those recent Blue Note special boxes (muchos $) as an extra which might hinder it coming out as a TP. We can hope though. I’d maybe ponder a bit over ‘Natural Illusions’. Probably stick with my Applause..
  13. I think ‘Happenings’ came out in the Music Matters 45rpm series so unlikely to be a Tone Poet I guess. The other two must be high up the list. Never came across an original NY ‘Happenings’ mono that didn’t have noise or distortion. I had one but ended up switching to a stereo, which had no problems. I was amazed when ‘Wahoo’ appeared back in the day on the Pathe Marconi’s as it was a pretty obscure session at the time. Years later I was able to get it on a NY mono.
  14. This one will be on my list, for sure !
  15. The ones I remember Annie Ross being in were ‘Basket Case’ and ‘Basket Case 2’. Quite effective in those, I thought.
  16. No problem. ‘Rough Trade’ UK were doing that set at 50% off (absolute bargain) but sadly I think that expired. Worth checking for deals of that type though, it is a great collection.
  17. I think the CD has a couple of bonus tracks not on the vinyl but yes, ‘Tubbs in New York’. Even better - treat yourself to a copy of the Fontana 12LP set mastered by Gearbox before it goes AWOL. This includes ‘Tubbs in New York’.
  18. You need to check out this album then. I guess you caught a bad night, happens to most musicians as we all know. ’Fall Out’ has an interesting parallel with Tubby Hayes’ ‘The Orchestra’, indeed both were recorded for the Philips group around the same time. A bit ‘MOR’ for some perhaps but Scott Walker as Producer knew what he was doing. Great band lineup too.
  19. Hadn’t heard of that one. I thought the Tempo masters were lost so at best they would likely be needle drops. I think the Sawanos, great as they are, must also be needle drops.
  20. CD1. John Peel’s ‘Top Gear’ programme from BBC Radio 1. Those were the days !
  21. Yeah - that is a particularly good album. I have all of the Tubby Sawanos I think and Tempo originals of a couple, including TAP15. Time to dig it out !
