  1. Interesting article here on one of Hank’s tenors - reputedly given to Ronnie Scott in the late 60s (‘68?) and recently bought by the fine UK tenor, Art Themen. I think Art is playing Swanage in July so hopefully he will give this tenor an ‘airing’. Mobley Tenor Article
  2. I have a VPI too and use it with L’Art du Son concentrate and have never had the mildew problem. I did use VPI fluid briefly years ago, without problem.
  3. Some raucous solos from Marcel on this one.
  4. The Nathan Davis track is a Jimmy Woode composition ‘Sconsolato’ I think. Don’t know this version, I am more familiar with the version by the Clarke/Boland Sextet on ‘Swing Im Bahnhof’.
  5. That would be ‘Sunrise in Mexico’. A Dorham composition which is also on ‘Whistle Stop’.
  6. Track 5 is ‘Organ Grinder’s Swing’ by the Jimmy Lunceford Orchestra Track 1 sounds as if it might be Clifford Jordan with Kenny Dorham from that ‘Starting Time’ LP on Jazzland.
  7. Really liking this one as a Tone Poet.
  8. Looks more like ‘Sir’ Danny Alexander to me..
  9. Didn’t CBS in the US own that Barnaby label that put out Candid reissues in the 70s/80s ? If that Japan reissue is in the same timeframe, that would explain it.
  10. There’s even a book that Collier wrote that goes with it - about his approach to jazz composition.
  11. There was a (low key) listing for Hank in the advert for one of the early 1980s NorthSea Festivals (remember seeing it and being amazed at the time) but it never happened.
  12. My version of that Miles/Konitz session came as one of a set of loose LPs (no sleeves or booklet) which Mole Jazz sold in one of their early 80s post-Xmas sales. £1 per LP ! Still got those LPs (all 12) and they still stand up. From this one - Those sales at Kings Cross were as manic as Harrods.
  13. Looks quite non-descript and anonymous to be honest, although there is a plaque outside which I think was on the sidewalk, to confirm what the place was.
  14. I used to have one ... in 1969. Junior version .
  15. The TOCJ was second hand but in immaculate condition, not a cut out and with OBI. Back in the 1990s I used to see similar second hand ones from the series in Mole but they were always £15 and up. Quite a chunk of change at the time. ‘Fraid so. My excuse - I played it in the car ! Still have it I think.
  16. Now a photocopying shop ! (at least it was when I visited the site). Those mohair jackets were very 1969/70.
  17. I got ‘Agharta’ on (great sounding) UK vinyl right at the time it came out but ‘Panaea’ was Japanese 2LP import only and very elusive/near mythic over here. Only got to finally hear it in 1991ish when I bought it on cassette !
  18. This Toshiba CD was £4 in Ray’s Jazz. I remember when Mole were selling them for over £15. Bargain !
  19. Just ordered a copy of this fine volume, which seems to be heading towards ‘sold out’. Shouldn’t have procrastinated..
  20. Nice sounding Danish Metronome LP
  21. From the Miles Complete Columbia box
  22. Just checked my racks and ‘Soothsayer’ did come out as a MM 2x45 rpm, can’t believe I forgot about it ! I guess that would likely rule it out as a TP though. I’ll try to give it a spin in the next day or so and compare it with the King.
  23. Decca reissue version - still need to do a check of this against the original Fontana. Last time I spun the McLean twofer I thought it sounded pretty good. Will have to check. Every version of ‘Soothsayer’ that I’ve ever heard has sounded shrill to my ears, very weird sonics on that session. I thought the King had the better sound than the LT but the LT, if I remember rightly, was a UK version in my collection. Again, more stuff to check. I need to retire to catch up on this stuff..
