‘Far Away Lands’. Yes, that one was a real welcome surprise when it came out over here on a French DMM LP.

Last time I saw David Murray was about 15 years ago with the Go-Kwa Masters, with Hamid Drake on drums and Olu Dara on trumpet. BBC Radio recorded it. Yes, agree that Drake is excellent.

Ah, fair enough - got ya. Pretty muddy sound on the whole but I get the impression that the session was low budget/low key. It is what it is I guess. It’s had some weird releases over the years. I remember that budget DJM LP in the 70s with the zebra stripe and safari cover put out under Herbie’s name. Not much mention of Tootie or Mtume.

Yeah, that one is great as well. Nearly forgot about it, time to dig it out ! When Fantasy had their big disposal these sets could be had at bargain prices. I think I paid £10 for the first at FOPP and about the same for the second. Awesome bang for the buck. Interesting to read about Koenig/DuNann’s Telefunken/AKG mikes and all-valve input streams and Westrex cutters with minimal complexity in the input signal processing. They got that absolutely right !

Excellent 4CD set brought out back in the day by Fantasy. Covers the whole gamut from Lighthouse All Stars to Woody Shaw. Nice booklet with session photos and memories of John Koenig too. Superb sound on this set too but no surprise given the source of the recordings.

Not so sure it’s ‘great’ - and the sound quality is so so at best. Still - worth hearing. The LP of a few years ago (RSD) was put out by a British outfit I think (offshoot of what used to be DJM) so I guess they might also be the source of any forthcoming CD.

There’s a record shop in Norwich? Proprietor A. Partridge?

Really liking this one, Pepper Adams really on form. Good article on ‘Room at the Top’ by Marc Myers on his blog. Must have walked past it at the UofA campus but don’t recall ever going in and can’t recall any jazz gigs there. The Tommy Banks Trio couldn’t have done a better job ! Hopefully Marc Vasey’s tape archive results in more gems like this.

Both Pepper Adams and the Tommy Banks Trio are great on this - atmosphere very well captured too. The only negatives are the skimpy booklet and the lack of numbering on my copy.

The 5LP set - impressive looking package. Need to take care with the volume not to annoy neighbours tonight. I find the early stuff such as the material in this Mosaic Candid set as well as the UA stuff and ‘Into The Hot’ side B to be sort of a ‘friendly’ introduction to Cecil. His later stuff I’ve found intimidating but seeing him in person a few times made much more sense of it. Two solo recitals at Jazz Bakery, Culver City we’re particularly memorable (and I even dug the poetry).

But rubbish sound quality.

Whilst opening up this set I re-discovered an old Sun Ra programme, Northeastern University 1990, which I thought I had lost. Four trumpets in the lineup !

The recent ‘1965’ CD release by Tubby has a very interesting prototype version of the ‘Proof’ Suite recorded for the BBC by the Commonwealth Big Band. Quite an ear-opener ! I’ve got that one on King somewhere (if I can find it ).

I think on that interview he did with the German collector guy (on YouTube) it was mentioned that they don’t duplicate between the series. I agree - ‘Wahoo’ would make an excellent TP. Yes, I guess it could come out on the ‘80th’ series. Failing that, there is always the Pathe Marconi issue, which I recall being not too bad..

Yeah, I have a mono ‘Green Street’ too and in pretty well archival quality. Won’t need a TP on that one ! (although I think it came out on MM so under Joe Harley rules it won’t be a TP I guess). The £2 ‘Latin Bit’ was in a clearance bin from years ago and they also had a trashed £2 Mobley ‘No Room For..’ which I passed on and should have got just for the cover. The same store had a mono NY ‘Out For Lunch’ on the wall for £10 which I snagged.

The only solution is to ban and impound all Brinkmann, LP12, RP10 etc.

‘Curtain Call’ was about £32 at my local. Probably £ for $ compared to our US friends so no great bargain. First impressions on this one are very good though - it is big sounding. I’ll have to compare it against the Mosaic LP. To be followed by this one. Also a TP - I have a (£2!) NY mono pressing of this one but the snap-crackle-and-pop can get obtrusive.

Good time to buy them now as people offload various titles as they pick up Tone Poets !
