  1. It's probably something like 'raging pachyderm'
  2. I like the Penguin guides, on the whole. Two things I just damn well hate about them though: (1) They never include Mosaics (apart from the Dean Benedetti). (2) The insulting and amazingly off-kilter text that's in there year after year concerning the great Woody Shaw. For the next edition (apparently in the works) I hope they correct at least the latter.
  3. Very Happy Birthday to Horace - one of my all-time favourite musicians ! And what a happy coincidence - 'Hard Bop Grandpop' has just arrived in the mail from Dan so I'll give it a spin.
  4. I have both of these on LP. The 'Three Moods' is a Debut original. The 'Quintet' is a limited Japanese pressing.
  5. I am OBSESSED with tracks 4 and 5 from this collection. Track 4 - 'Spiro' by Anton Valotti, 1975 Track 5 - 'Collect' by Alan Hawkshaw 1972. My faves are side 1 track 6 ('Main Chance' - Parker/Parish), track 5 on side 2 ('Condition Red' - Barry Stoller 1972) and track 6 on side 2 ('Hot Ice' - Alan Parker 1974). Cheesy but damn good.
  6. I am OBSESSED with tracks 4 and 5 from this collection. Really? Quite enjoy this LP - in a 'bring back the 1970s' sort of way. Much of this music was used as backing for the TV test card back in the day !
  7. Jim Rosenthal David Coleman David Icke
  8. I'd love to find a copy of that Levister Debut LP but I've never, ever seen one. I have the OJC of the Ada Moore - will check it out again.
  9. Same here ! I wonder if it's ever been reissued in full in any form? (suspect not)
  10. 'Bite Hard' - Music de Wolfe collection of 70s library music.
  11. There's a bit of info on Lonnie Levister in the 10CD Mingus Debut set booklet. Don't have the booklet in front of me but recall that he was dating Max Roach's ex-girlfriend (or something like that) and she got him the recording date with Debut (her money I believe). One or two tracks (with vocals) in the big Debut box arranged by Levister and with Thad Jones prominent on trumpet . They sound pretty dated now but are most definitely interesting to hear.
  12. Wow - Reading the book I'd assumed it was an accurate recollection of what actually happened but your comments completely over-turn them. Amazing how we'd assumed that such things were 'gospel'.
  13. It would need initiating by Messrs Dankworth and Wheeler I think (I assume they both hold the rights?). Neat idea re: BGO though. It had crossed my mind !
