  1. Some years ago I had some really good finds there. A copy of Dolphy's 'Out To Lunch' Blue Note mono original hanging on the upstairs wall for £10 for example ! That stuff (from a single collection I think) disappeared very fast..
  2. Bill Grauer Jack Higgins Orin Keepnews
  3. Sounds like Avid. It was next door to an indie theatre on one of the side roads, I think.
  4. Brian Cohen Judith Biggus
  5. The description does sound a dead-ringer for the megabucks Oxfam shop in Winchester though - which has lots of classical and English folk !
  6. Hmm - doesn't ring any bells, Bev. Was this place up and running within the last 10 years or so? The only side-street place in Salisbury that I can recall was Avid and that was just off the High Street (LH turnoff) in the direction towards the Cathedral Close. They didn't have much classical though and it was on 2 floors, quite a narrow place. My all-time bargain there was a copy of Grant Green's 'The Latin Bit' Blue Note NY USA mono original in OK condition (excellent laminated sleeve) for the grand sum of £2 !
  7. Gerald Wilson Orch. 'Eternal Equinox' (World Pacific, stereo) Ed Thigpen 'Out Of The Storm' (Verve black label, stereo)
  8. Cannonball Adderley with Orchestra 'African Waltz' (Riverside DG mono)
  9. Yes Bev - a vastly depleted situation out here in the SW compared to what it was even 3 years ago. Salisbury used to have a 'Solo' with some interesting jazz CDs usually to be found in the sales rack and a nice Avid Record vinyl shop but both of those bit the dust a few years ago. Avid also closed their Bournmouth store (always worth a look whenever I was in town) and I think the 'flagship' Oxford store has also gone. Real shame. Exeter used to have a great little jazz vinyl/star wars memorabilia ( ) outlet calls 'Hen's Teeth' on Gandy Street but again - that went belly up several years ago to make way for a 'women's appareil' store after the idiot building owners hit the proprietors with a big rent hike. Of course there's still the wonderful little jazz CD store in Bath - lots of nice CD selections in there and very friendly and enthusiastic store staff. As regards the rest of Bath - sadly the Fopp closed over a year ago, the vinyl outlet ('Gnashers') up in Walcot St. is long gone and HMV is a mere shadow of its former self. Winchester has the World's Most Expensive Oxfam Shop vinyl. Nearly £50 for a beat-up copy of Harold McNair 'The Fence'. Heck - I'll stick with the CD !
  10. Ain't that the truth ! Until these 3 'super-prisons' are built then I see no change to this. Having said that - with the economy as it is we'll probably need more. One of the great unfathomables - why is it some people get the call-out for dury service 2,3 or 4 times and some people (e.g. me) can go through their life without 1 callout. Not that I'm complaining..
  11. Up again for this thread. It seems to be getting some airtime on one of the Freeview channels. Will have to check it out again. And yes - very little actual Bix other than James Bolam getting some of his LPs by mail order (the fabled 'British' Bix LPs mentioned in the other thread perhaps? ). As previously mentioned, the actual music is by Frank Ricotti's group.
  12. They should use Mosaic on a Govt. sponsored smokers assistance programme.
  13. Jaco Pastorius Wayne Cochrane Little Beaver
  14. Very sad news - such unbelievable fluency in the upper register and one of the very best tones around (which Gil Evans, Quincy Jones, Tadd Dameron etc. all recognised and made much use of on record). RIP Probably the 'best sounding' jazz trombonist of them all, in my personal opinion. Still playing around 1998/99 at least - I'm sure he was in a trombone section I saw back then.
  15. Interesting thought - probably very likely ! Wasn't Bill Evans half-Welsh though anyway? :rsmile:
  16. From BBC 'Jazz 625' - that particular episode featured several UK groups. With a young (pre-Mahavishnu) Rick Laird on acoustic bass !
  17. Melba Liston Dame Nellie Melba Dame Edna Everage
  18. Enya Dana Val Doonican
  19. But I'll bet he has a full set of Pathe Macaroni DMM Blue Notes and the entire Applause catalogue !
  20. In heavy rotation of late? Yep, expecially the last three records of the set, a (re) discovery. You've convinced me. This set will be 'on deck' tomorrow chez moi
  21. Just seen Freddie the once from very long range at the Royal Festival Hall and it was part of an all-star Charlie Parker tribute organised by George Wein. In the lineup with Freddie were Curtis Fuller, Michael Brecker (not fully sure but I think it was Michael in that particular lineup - anyway he was on great form that night), Roy Haynes and Slam Stewart. Slam even did one of his trademark 'arco-bass plus vocal' solos !
  22. In heavy rotation of late?
  23. That one is a KILLER ! :tup : Ted Curson on trumpet in an excellent 'foil' role to the two baris. Only on vinyl like all Beehives, I believe.
