  1. Still got one of their antique valves - pentode I think. A monster specimen that was a spare part for a naval gunnery fire control system ! Bigger version of this one:
  2. On the 'Virgin Venture' label. For a brief pico-second when jazz was the latest big marketing/advertising thing over here. Didn't last..
  3. Happy Birthday, Prince Lasha ! 'Insight' UK CBS LP going on deck tonight. Hey Clifford - did you ever ask Lasha if he did that 60s BBC TV soundtrack session when he was living over here?
  4. Hey sidewinder, I saw this one myself and was more than a bit curious, but I had just purchased the Fresh Sounds 2 cd set and wasn't sure it would be up to the same standard, is it? Cliff - I don't know the Fresh Sounds Shihab set but can vouch that this one is top notch Shihab. Up to the best standard of sessions like 'Seeds' and 'Companionship' and the work with CBBB etc. I don't have the CD but I have one of those Oktav Japanese facsimile LPs, which sounds fantastic. Recommend that next time this comes in at Dusty, press the trigger marked 'fire' .
  5. Indeed. The big chains such as HMV were the worst culprits.
  6. Graham Collier Music 'Songs For My Father' (UK Fontana, stereo)
  7. I saw them live on one occasion and it was fantastic - a memorable evening (Bath Fest 1988, broadcast back in the day on BBC TV). I've always felt that the recordings never really did the band justice - although I like the two ECM albums 'Avant Pop' and 'I Only Have Eyes For You'. The concert I saw was, sadly, the one and only time I saw the late Philip Wilson.
  8. Michael Garrick Sextet 'Troppo' (Argo, stereo)
  9. This video by Mangelsdorff has recently been made available on 'the other site': "Albert Mangelsdorff All Stars Porsche Hot Jazz Festival, Europapark Rust/Germany, 4th September, 2004 Albert Mangelsdorff, tb Christof Lauer, ts Wolfgang Dauner, p Markus Schieferdecker, b Wolfgang Haffner, dr"
  10. I used to have a vinyl of that 'Matter Of Taste' album by Mumps on MPS and couldn't get into it at the time - ended up selling it to Mole Jazz ! Time perhaps to reconsider that verdict..
  11. This one merits inclusion - currently out of stock at Dusty but was over the $20 mark when available. And worth every cent based on the scarcity of the original and the quality of the music.
  12. I guess you could argue that the Henderson Capricorn is quite a good deal as it includes both of the Capricorn LP releases on one CD (this one is also available from them as a 2LP set). Great one to get, I agree (as is Soul Brother's other Henderson issue of the Blue Note/Capitol sessions).
  13. Really? What makes you state that? I agree that 'soul jazz' gets a hard rap in the Penguin Guide but there are plenty of Prestige sessions in there that get 4 stars. This book is a useful tome to read in the john/stimulate discussion etc, just like the AMG Guide - but shouldn't be taken too seriously.
  14. Ted Curson 'The New Thing and the Blue Thing', with Bill Barron?
  15. and all before 'Hum Dono' and 'Windmill Tilter' are reissued too..
  16. Thanks for the suggestion! Actually, I don't have it, so I'll see if it shows up somewhere at a reasonable price. Seconded - also 'Full Circle' on UK Fontana (but that one is quite hard to find). And 'Windmill Tilter' !
  17. I've got a couple of the yellow ones. I think one's a Les McCann.
  18. Woody Shaw Columbia Studio set, LPs 1 and 2
  19. Tweety Pie Blind Lemon Pie Blind Lemon Jefferson
  20. A couple of really wet days straight out of Soddom and Gommoragh but last night was almost a Summer clear night sky (heck, I was drinking wine outdoors ) then fierce winds today but no rain. Let's hope that's it for a while !
  21. Congrats ! I feel as though I have got a really good deal on the cat front. They make me sneeze like hell so can never keep one (also they are allergic to vinyl I believe ). The 2 very friendly neighbours cats visit regularly, 'help' with the gardening and hang out on my lawns to sunbathe - a perfect situation !
  22. Cannonball Adderley Quintet 'Live At The Lighthouse' (Riverside blue reel/mike DG mono)
  23. Indeed. Have a good one !
  24. Indeedy ! Not a masterpiece by any means - but certainly worth hearing. The audio quality on the original Limelight LP I have is also flat and muffled.
