  1. Well done John !
  2. Yeah - same font as used on Elvin’s ‘Merry Go Round’ I think. Stinks of the 1970s !
  3. Doubt that there was any influence on Duke but that is an interesting thought. Mary Lou Williams also operating in this area at that time. The ‘Anthem’ tracks are on Dutton Vocalion’s reissue of the ‘October Woman’ LP. To be honest I think the CD sounds better as unlike most old EPs, there is no snap crackle pop. Vocalion had access to the master tape I think. Good to remind myself of just how damn brilliant this one is. This was one very happy and compatible front line.
  4. Lousy font !
  5. It’s in Garrick’s ‘Liturgical’ style - influenced by English medieval/choral/church music. Totally unique. In the same vein as ‘Jazz Praises at St Pauls’. The music was reissued by Vocalion on CD on one of the Garrick releases. I think his experiments in this area even preceded Duke Ellington - the ‘Sacred Concerts’ would be a US equivalent but this is much more English. The Argo EP was produced in tiny numbers I think.
  6. More EPs. Herb & Lorraine Geller Imperial session.
  7. Rare Garrick EP with Joe Harriott and cathedral organ ! This one is most definitely a ‘find’.
  8. Sad news - but a really great legacy. RIP.
  9. This is great, not surprisingly. Half price too from Juno ! Shame there wasn’t a 4th side.
  10. Can’t go wrong with Barney on Contemporary !
  11. Next up - Verdict - definitive issue, by far the best version of this classic I have heard (don’t have an original). Charlie Mariano never sounded better and the Spanish guitar sound is exquisite.
  12. Picked this one up - and the Oliver Nelson. My excuse - it is Xmas. First impression of ‘Blues..’ is that it sounds amazing. Leaves the old Anchor version for dust. Likely my new ‘go to’ copy now. Sleeve quality superb too and at least up to Tone Poet standards.
  13. Oliver Nelson shoot-off between early US orange/black stereo and 1976 UK pressing put out by Anchor Records with US sleeve. The early US version sounds lovely - bags of RVG punch where it counts, excellent dynamics. The UK Anchor Records, which used the HMV tapes I think, sounds also very good indeed, albeit with less punch and a few more pressing glitches. Extremely musical though and benefited from an RCM spin. I was wondering if I ‘needed’ the new AP version and I guess the answer is probably no. My hunch is that the AP will sound not unlike the Anchor.
  14. Winnipeg 50 Probably a lost cause again but you never know..
  15. Enjoyed this one since I got the Pathe Marconi vinyl back in the 1980s, which sounded OK sonically at the time to me. Have a Liberty vinyl and also a blue label copy, plus at least one copy on CD, so you could say it is a favourite. The sound of the session is totally unlike RVG. ‘Ethereal’ would sum it up for me.
  16. Ten Four.. I have it on a mid-70s Impulse Green label double with super thin vinyl so maybe I need an upgrade. That one is combined with ‘Mingus Plays Piano’.
  17. Don’t tempt me - a local store has a copy.
  18. Excellent Craft Records release - and a nice RTI pressing.
  19. Excellent reissue of that Oktav !
