  1. Friends of mine who were in London the other day were shocked at the total lack of social distancing and refusal to wear masks of many of the people using the Underground. Not exactly helping the situation.
  2. Sounds great ! Good to hear that Simon S. is back in live tenor action.
  3. Once it arrives, I’ll post some comments about it. The Pure Pleasure Tolliver reissues I’ve heard so far, mastered by Ray Staff, sound great. I’ll bet the originals never sounded so good.
  4. Me ! (back in the day )
  5. Finally opted for Pure Pleasure’s LP reissue of Charles Tolliver Music Inc. ‘Live at the Loosdrecht Jazz Festival’. Retribution for having sold my Black Lion copy to Mole Jazz for a pittance all those years ago ! Also threw in a ‘Live at Slugs Vol 2’.
  6. Too bad that tooter’s site is no longer in operation. That was the fount of all knowledge relating to Ronnie Ross. At least the thread survives though.
  7. There’s a whole archive thread on Ronnie Ross to consult - one of the board members at the time (Tooter) even set up a pretty definitive tribute site. Ronnie Ross Thread
  8. Sorry to hear that. Considering the cost of these is 3x the CD, pretty damn poor of Optimal.
  9. Mine’s arrived - sounding on the whole pretty good, considering the circumstances. Really like the way that Elvin’s drums are captured. Shame that Coltrane in particular is so off-mike though.
  10. Sold to me ! Thanks for the clarifications - a no-brainier when it hits the street. I’m sure it will be brilliant. I love those old ‘Jazz Today’, ‘Sounds of Jazz’ and ‘Jazz in Britain’ shows and it is always good to hear Peter Clayton, Charles Fox et al, guys who really knew their stuff when it came to jazz of that era and who weren’t BS-ing with trendy pontifications. Never got to hear enough of these shows back in the day. If I remember right, ‘Jazz Today’ interfered with school hours and ‘Jazz In Britain’ went out at some god-forsaken hour when everyone was fast asleep ! Additional plus - the BBC FM stereo transmissions when recorded reel to reel sound pretty damn good. That was the case with the BT box so no doubt will apply too here.
  11. Thanks ! Will be happy with the CD.
  12. Talking of Mosaic ‘slicks’, I’ve got the Larry Young Complete Blue Note cover framed on one of my walls. One framing project still to complete is of a Coleman Hawkins French LP that I was meaning to put up. It is signed on the front by Hawk, Roy Haynes and Jimmy Jones - during one of their early 50s Paris visits.
  13. Yes, listening to that Australian broadcast, sensational was the word. Might even prefer it to the original ! How is the vinyl? Optimal pressing, presumably ?
  14. My CD of this one is out for delivery tomorrow. Bundled in a spare and super-cheap 2CD copy of Tubby Hayes ‘Grits’.
  15. Latest Trunk 2CD compilation. Plenty of jazz - rare Mark Murphy, Karin Krog (with Don Ellis !), Michael Garrick, Kenny Graham, Dudley Moore, Basil Kirchin....and Mike and Bernie Winters.
  16. The drummer looks like Chris Karan.
  17. Good read. I remember seeing that mid 70s Humph band with Bruce Turner, Mike Pyne and - with relevance to this thread - Kathy Stobart. Ms Stobart was very impressive on both tenor and baritone. Mike Pyne playing cornet on a feature rings a bell too. I’d forgotten that.
  18. Good that Mr Abate is back in his second home. Things must be starting to normalise. Mr Barnes is in this neck of the woods with Dave Newton and Art Themen I think in the not too distant future so I think I feel a gig is imminent.
  19. I’m sure I would have remembered if Walter Bishop Jr had been with Woody when I him but don’t think he was. First time seeing Woody in 1978 it was Lyle Mays. I saw him again at Ronnies in 1980/81 (a performance which was live televised) but can’t recall who was on piano.
  20. Hails from Devon I think. As does another fine altoist - Roz Harding, featured in current Mike Westbrook groups. Roz’s dad used to sell me LPs.
