Check out the new cover for Another Workout: I like it better than the original (which I sold a few months ago in preperation for the RVG). That is a WONDERFUL sleeve! Oh definitely YES! A great new photo and the lettering emulating the original "Workout". Someone put thought into what people would like. MG My thoughts exactly, re: the classy emulation of the original 'Workout' sleeve art. And not a single booby or cock in sight.

Blue Note Album Cover Books

I got mine from the Cockburn St. store in Edinburgh a few years back. Last year I was in the Rose St. store and they still had them! Is that the 'New York Hot' that they still had? -

Yes King Ubu - I was thinking of his soprano playing on the Rendell/Carr LPs, which is very fine indeed. Lovely clear tone he gets. He plays some soprano on that Carr/Rendell/someone else Universal reissue as well, doesn't he? "Greek Variations" is the title, can't remember who the headliners are. Yep - Neil Ardley's 'Greek Variations'. Suite featuring the Rendell/Carr group (just prior to their breakup around 1970). Great album - reissued on CD by Universal !

Anyone in the UK who has access to the FOPP stores can also find the two Blue Note books for £4.99 each ! Too bad they don't also have the 'New York Hot' -
Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?

That Jazz Crusaders box is a killer ! Just listening to CD1 of the Randy Weston Select. Hugely enjoyable - the 'Little Niles' session in fine sound. One of the strongest of the Selects, I think. -
I've just realised that my initial response to this thread was wrong. It wasn't the 'Greatest Hits' LP (although this was the first one I actually bought) but a loan from an uncle (for which I will forever be grateful) of the 'Essential Miles Davis' 3LP set put out by Henri Renaud at French CBS ( ). This is the one with the flock 'Indian restaurant wallpaper' style box cover (very early 70s) and the bonus 45rpm of 'Great Expectations'. That would have made the first Miles I heard side 1 track 1 'Bye Bye Blackbird' with Coltrane. Not a bad intro. I've since got me a copy of that great 3LP set !

Pondering this one again I would have to nominate 'Mingus Moves' on Atlantic. This one grabbed me strongly from first listen back in the 70s. Not only does it have the Adams/Pullen powerhouse in great form but the compositions/arrangements are also good and Danny Richmond is just raring to go at the drums (I think he had just recently returned to both Mingus and jazz after a haitus playing rock). Not too much is heard of Ronald Hampton on trumpet but what he does play fits in well. This one sometimes gets lukewarm reviews but IMO its a very good one and makes an interesting contrast with the somewhat more mannered 'Changes 1 & 2' albums of this vintage. The other nominee would probably have to be 'Mingus at the Bohemia' LP on Debut. First heard this on a Prestige 70s twofer but it's now one the great Debut CD set. Sound is great for the time, the Bert/Barrow front line is first rate and the atmosphere of the performance is very well captured.

Off the top of my head, the following get (or got) a particularly good sound out of the soprano - John Surman, Jimmy Heath, Clifford Jordan, Don Rendell and Stan Sultzmann.

Sad news. Time to spin Tina Brooks' 'True Blue' in recognition. He plays great on that one.

Randy Weston CD3. Malcolm Addey has done great things with the sound, yet again. -
The 'Tolliver' fills me with eager anticipation ! Agree that Kenny Werner is well overdue a BN date of his own. Much impressed with his North Sea Fest performance with Kenny Wheeler last month. Maybe a BN date with Wheeler for a follow-up perhaps?

This one is already endearing itself to me big time. She has a great voice and the backing group includes Ken McIntyre and Jaki Byard. Recommended ! Wonder what happened to Honi Gordon? (after the 'Mingus Moves' recordings - the most recent I know of hers).

I thought they didn't ship to the UK ? Sadly, they don't but a Stateside board member very kindly helped out.

My Fantasy 'job lot' has arrived here safely in the UK. Some more good listening tonight (first on deck - 'Lem's Beat' )
