  3. Indeed it is. I'm going to have to start blocking www.mosaicrecords.com.
  4. Available at a certain site..
  5. Off the top of my head I'm not sure but 'Alligator Boogaloo', 'Mr Shing-A-Ling' and 'The Jody Grind' must be some of the last. 'Forlenza Venosa Associates' got heavily involved after the Liberty takeover.
  6. Wasn't the 'Blue John' issued on a DMM ( ) vinyl back in the early 1990s? I have this on the CD but I'm sure I've also seen the vinyl.
  7. Not K. Abe? (who did quite a few of this series I think)
  8. It even got as far as the cover art for 'Back To The Tracks' appearing on W61st inner sleeves, I believe. I'll check later but I'm sure I've seen this one. Pretty sure the cover art for "Blue John" also appeared on an inner sleeve or two - back in the day. (I remember the linernotes mentioning this - although I'm away from my copy at the moment, otherwise I'd check personally.) Yes, I'm pretty damn sure I've seen that one too on some of those pre-'66 vintage inner sleeves.
  9. I've just had an email from them saying that there's 1 week of the sale to go (ends Aug 31st) and that they now do PayPal. Oh dear.. no excuses now for Stitt and Poppa Lou
  10. I hear ya. Yeah, but they still had shots of those puuurrrttttyyy models to use. Actually, I was under the impression that Lush Life had been issued originally at the time. Was that actually a "rainbow" LP the first time it came out? First issue was a King pressing in Japan. It had a terrible generic cover. I quite like the King cover of that one. Wasn't the first issue actually the 'Applause' budget issue?

  12. Those early Lateef Savoys are terrific ! I have most of them I think on the 70s Arista twofer 'Morning' and the follow-on double 'Gong'. The front line of Lateef and Curtis Fuller works extremely well on these sessions. Very similar in terms of sound to the 'Before Dawn' session.
  13. 'Compulsion' is a monster of a session - one of the very best things on the Hill Mosaic box. The extra percussion from Nadi Qamar works very well with Andrew's percussive piano attack and there's a great sense of energy and purpose to this album. Very under-estimated !

  15. Got all 6 disks of this one currently loaded into the I-Pod. Hugely enjoyable - a good prompt for me to power the thing up right now.. 'Mr Sandman' playing right now.
  16. I have the Mosaic LP set for this one. Sound quality is superb - tracks are as per the 'Turn Out The Stars' CD box. Price point seems to be $300 and up.
  17. That'll be a Vocalion/Vogue pressing.
  18. 'Live at Peps', 'The Golden Flute' and 'Before Dawn' are my 3 favourites. All of them absolutely terrific. I have the Verve Elite of 'Before Dawn' (came and went in a hot minute) but still seeking a holy grail vinyl of that one. Anyone ever seen it?
  19. Holst 'The Planets' - Sir Adrian Boult/New Philharmonia Orchestra and Chorus (HMV stereo) Wout Steenhuis 'Surfin' (Columbia Lansdowne mono)

  21. Sorry to hear this. RIP.
  22. There was a gut-wrenching sequence where he was checking out the damage at his house. Most of the prints on the ground floor were damaged - many with what looked like 'halo' effects around the faces of the performers which left the faces unaffected ! Herman Leonard was remarking that this was an amazing effect, in itself. The negatives seemed to have been stored in his upstairs levels and boxed up so they survived. He lost his dark room equipment and notes for development of each negative so in many ways he was having to start again from scratch. The fortitude with which he reacted to this news and accepted the reality of the situation was truly impressive. The end of the film saw him moving to LA with his archive and starting afresh - although his heart was still in very much in New Orleans. Just occasionally the BBC earn their licence fee and this was one such occassion..
  23. Superb film on BBC last night telling of Herman Leonard's battle to save his home and archive of photos in New Orleans. "Among the devastation when hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans in August 2005, jazz photographer Herman Leonard lost thousands of his pictures in the floods. This is the story of New Orleans' struggle to bring back the music and the story of Herman Leonard's fight, at the age of 83, to rebuild his archive and his life. Part of BBC FOUR's American Visions season. Fri 18 Aug, 21:00-22:00 60mins Stereo Widescreen" Anyone else see it? A touching portrait of this great photographer and beautifully filmed. Also a vivid portrait of the problems in New Orleans and the threat to jazz there.
