    Johnny O'Neal

I recall hearing him many years ago in a London performance with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers (I wonder if that was the lineup with Blanchard and Harrison?) and he was excellent. Sounds like a fun 'hang' !
  2. This one has gone ballistic. Is it really that rare? Quebec/Hardee
  3. Ah, the memories of that fine emporium . Picked up lots of Japanese import Blue Note titles there (including a rare sighting for the time of the Tyrone Washington). The range they had in the early to mid 1990s was pretty astonishing.
  4. Clifford Brown Helen Merril Helen of Troy
  5. Continuing the Impulse theme: 'The Happy Horns of Clark Terry' (Impulse stereo original)
  6. And the Lou Donaldson 'Say It Loud' (another good one).
  7. Great stuff ! Even though I've got that Prestige Coltrane CD box I still like to bring out the RCA twofers on a regular basis. Us Coltrane fanatics are spoilt for choice these days and long may it last..
  8. The release of this album by Verve was listed a few months ago on their website. It's no longer listed. Anyone knows if this was indeed reissued? Picked up the 'Broken Wing' at my local Borders today for £6. Looks like it is back in stock (my jaw dropped when I saw it in the rack, I thought it was long OOP and rare). Lovely album by the way - great group, great sound and Baker at his most lyrical.
  9. I think you're correct. I seem to recall reading that UK masters were used in the most recent CD issue of 'A Love Supreme' - being the best surviving audio source. I have a couple of HMV mono Impulses of the Mingus material but was disappointed with the sound though. Will have to check them out again.
  10. Colonel Parker Colonel Mustard Captain Sensible
  11. Willard Scott Scott McKenzie McKenzie Phillips Emo Philips Elmo Big Bird
  12. Reading Ahley Kahn's 'House That Trane Built' book has got me pulling out my Impulse vinyl, starting with these: Yusef Lateef 'Live At Pep's' (Impulse stereo original) Quincy Jones 'The Quintessence' (UK Impulse 70s reissue - sounds great. HMV had an A1 set of master tape copies I think.) JJ Johnson/Kai Winding 'The Great Kai and JJ' (Impulse stereo original, A-1) Some real gems on this label, not to mention all of those Coltranes...
  13. I got a picture of a bearded hippie.
  14. Nice hang tonight. Some of y'all should come by sometime! Very friendly environment. Jeez - you guys were still hanging out there when I was up having breakfast next day. Must call in sometime !
  15. wow - how about a warning before we click on this link?? Damn, I didn't see the warning.
  16. I remember when this one came out (around 1975?) and it raised quite a bit of furore in Jazz Journal International in the new album review section - was torched by the reviewer. A banjo album from around the same time got similar treatment. I'll see if I can dig out the review.
  17. I've got that one - love the photo of Trane in deep thought on the cover. Nice music with Wilbur Harden too, will dig it out today.
  18. Gloria Steinem Gloria Gaynor Gloria Estefan
  19. Up for a deserved bit of fresh air, in recognition of the Big John Wilkopedia thread. Just spinning the vinyl of 'Boogaloo'. Man, this one is white hot, specially side 2.
  20. Big John Patton 'Boogaloo' (BN Capitol). 'Wally' in the runout..
  21. I'm a big fan of Desmond's 'From The Hot Afternoon' but have never heard the 'Bridge' disk I'm afraid. The Japanese A&M vinyl of 'From..' is a wonderful MOR listen.
  22. Not that I'm jealous or anything...
  23. Put in my 2 peneth - nice to give something back, for once, to Big John.
  24. Sorry Tooter - I didn't manage to record it. Totally not expecting any Ronnie Ross on this soundtrack, or indeed any jazz content. If I had then this would have been put onto DVD (I think it was put out on Freeview on BBC4). Another from me too !
