The Jazz club is going to shut their doors for good. NEW YORK (AP) — The Lenox Lounge, a cabaret in New York City's Harlem neighborhood with a supercool, Art Deco style that made it a favorite of jazz greats like Billie Holiday, Miles Davis and John Coltrane, is closing its doors on New Year's Eve. Longtime owner Alvin Reed says that with rents rising, he can no longer afford the lease on the jazz landmark. It opened in 1942. He says the landlord wanted $20,000 per month. The space is set to be taken over in the new year by Richard Notar, a managing partner at Nobu Restaurants. Notar tells The New York Times (http://nyti.ms/UMwETJ ) he hopes to keep the bar as "an old watering hole" with live music, but he hasn't worked out a deal with Reed yet to use the Lenox Lounge name.

I am trying to figure out who this is singing with the Stan Getz Quartet. It is a radio broadcast. The radio announcer is speaking French, and I understand the names of the members of the quartet when told, but this female singer, I don't have a clue who she could be. Whatever happen to Ralph Moore? Did he stop playing? It's been several years since I've seen him play in New York, or even see he is on someone's recording. I really enjoyed his sound.

Thursday night I went and saw Mary Stallings & The Eric Reed Trio at Dizzy's Club Coca Cola. Eric opened the set with the trio. He started out mentioning that a big time jazz artists just had a stroke that day, but he didn't say who it was because the news wasn't made public. Anyone have an insight to who this may have been?

How did the Ku Klux Klan play an indirect role in financing the early popularity of some legendary black jazz musicians? Money from the racist group helped keep an independent record company in business in the 1920s that played a role in the growth of jazz music. Klan members in the 1920s. The Gennett record label was a big independent record company in the early Jazz Age. I caught the first set for this concert tonight. What a stella band. It was sad seeing Bobby Hutcherson walk around with an oxygen tank. He really didn't have that much strength. He sad down a lot while playing. I caught the Lou Donaldson Quartet at Dizzy's Club Coca Cola. Lou can still play, albeit his set list hasn't changed.

I am listening to the Tadd Dameron Royal Roost Broadcast from 1948 tonight. These shows went on consecutively for a few months. This appeared to be true for a lot of working bands back in the 40s and 50s. Anyone have an idea when these long engagements at clubs stopped? I would believe it would have been in the late 1960s. Of course this was due to the decline of jazz when rock came into existence.

It is still very bad. I am on Long Island, NY. The retaining walls to hold back ocean's tides (a real oxymoron) on the south shore are 11 feet. High tide was 13.5 feet. The highest ever recorded. So many homes have water up to their front doors. I thnk it is time to move to Denver. That city is a mile above sea level. 1. Hurricane 2. Full moon 3. Global Warming. Equals flooding.
