Very sad news. But then it's a very sad world we are forced to live in today. Hopefully the spineless bastards get caught real fast.
I worked 5 blocks from the 9-11 attack in NYC. You are left with a sense of helplessness at this moment. My prayers go out to the victim’s families.
Outside of Benny Golson and possibly Horace Silver, I can't think of any jazz musician/composer still alive that is writing any jazz standards. Has jazz come to a point where new standards are no longer incorporated into the mainstream of the music? Can you think of anyone else who is still writing tunes that will make their way into the mainstream of jazz, and preformed by the musicians of today? I'm sure there are musicians that are composing great music right now, but will their compositions be played and recorded 20 years from now?
Now would you have added a few different tunes to this album?
1
Song For My Father (Horace Silver)
2
Blue Train (John Coltrane)
3
Moanin' (Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers)
4
Blues Walk (Lou Donaldson)
5
Autumn Leaves (Cannonball Adderley feat. Miles Davis)
6
Midnight Blue (Kenny Burrell)
7
Back at the Chicken Shack (Jimmy Smith feat. Stanley Turrentine)
8
The Sidewinder (Lee Morgan)
9
Watermelon Man (Herbie Hancock)
Just bought my first MP3 player today. I've never been a fan of MP3, mostly because of the lost of sound with the compression. I have always been able to hear he sound lose, mostly with cymbals. This was what kept me away.
But I am switching jobs and my soon to be former employer makes an MP3 player, so I went out and bought one before I lose that employee discount.
20 gig player and also stores and takes photos.
How many of you use it for jazz music?
It will come to a point where you can only shop for jazz on the web. Maybe it will be a good thing. Maybe some of these labels will open their vaults and we can download albums as well as order them. Just think if Prestige, Blue Note, Fantasy and others offered their catalog.
Today I went to my local Boarders during lunch that in the past had 3 1/2 isles of jazz. It is now down a little over a half an isle. Buying jazz CD's more and more seems to only be fesable on line. I like to browse through the rows andshelves. A lot of times I would end up buying more than what I came for. You can't do this on line. Maybe I souldn't complain, the classical section was just 6 rows.
Even Tower records use to have a large section for jazz, but that too is a thing of the past. I remember in the 1990's, Tower records of west 4th street had nearly an entire floor for jazz. No more.
I'll be looking for that one, Andy Kirk and His Clouds of Joy.
Off the subject somewhat, Salt Peanuts was taken from a Louie Armstrong solo, has anyone heard Armstrong's tune? I can't remember the name of the tune, but Dizzy did get it from there.
The TV was playing the other day, my daughter was watching Blues Clues, all of a sudden I hear "Rhytm-a-ning". Has anyone else every heard this Monk tune on Blue's Clues?
I'm not sure. This club's only been open now for 6 months. I went saw the Heath Brothers on Thursday. I've been in better jazz clubs. This one is geared towards the upscale, high end, and high price. A heineken beer costs 8 bucks. I didn't need the view of the Manhattan skyline, just give me the music.
I posted this in the audio fourm but didn't get any feed back. I am trying here now.
I have a DVD+RW recorder. Someone gave me a few DVD-R disc, will they work with a DVD+RW recorder? I tried but, it just spits them out. I am guessing that it won't work. Anyone here know the answer?

Jimmy and Albert Heath are going to do a Percy Heath Memorial show in NYC this week. There will be other artists as well. I can't seem to find out where this is happening. Does anyone have an idea?
It does list Charlie Rouse on Trumpet. The sound is great for the Monk date. Not much as far as packaging. Just a sleeve with a photo of Monk and The track listing on the back. I got it used a record store for .99 cents. Cpuldn't go wrong.
