  1. To throw out another name, I've heard some nice playing from Marty Ehrlich...

  3. $97.98 at CD Universe. A review can be found here.
  4. So, whatever happened to "Live at the Half Note"?
  5. I'm currently collecting mostly cats, dust, and troubles.
  6. I've liked Lord Dunsany's writings as well. (As a matter of fact, I once worked for Owslwick Press, which published illustrated editions of a couple of his works.)
  7. I think the great page inflation ocurred just as my interest was winding down. Writers were more concise when they had to use typewriters!
  8. When I was younger I've collected such things as stamps, coins, comic books and science fiction. I'd like to sell a bunch of my comic books, but haven't had the time. My enthusiasm for SF faded a bit after I'd worked as an asst. editor at an SF magazine for a couple years -- I read too much bad SF on the slush pile. The only SF author I've read lately is Jack Vance. (I'd like to reread some P.K. Dick sometime; hope it still stands up.)

African Marketplace has always been my favorite...
  10. Yeah, I'm just glad that I sprung for the handcarved wooden box edition. Sure, remind me that I don't have the NKC box!

    Abdullah Ibrahim

He's performing with his Ekaya septet on a 70th birthday tour. He'll be in Philadelphia on 11/6 at the Painted Bride.
  12. Only $12 in Philly: What We Live Four -- Larry Ochs (tenor/soprano sax), Lisle Ellis (bass), Don Robinson (percussion) and special guest Saadet Turkoez (voice) -- Slought Foundation, 4017 Walnut Street, Philadelphia Oct 19 (Tue) - 8-10 pm - $12
  13. Is anyone else as surprised as I am to hear this? ALAN! YOU of ALL people! Ordering late? Shame! :rsly: I can feel the shame... But the good news is that it arrived yesterday! It's quite a stunning package, isn't it? I think I'm going to go offline right now and give it a listen...
  14. Sound samples from three of the volumes can be found here on CD Universe.

Very much so, IMO! Together with Walt Dickerson (just why the fuck isn't the man recording anymore?!?! I know that he is still fairly active as performer and musician in Philly (correct, Alan?)) Jamal might be my favorite vibist. Walt Dickerson is still composing and practicing, but hasn't performed in public or recorded for a while, alas. (I think he was interested in performing, but hadn't gotten any offers that worked for him.) At least Khan Jamal (one of Philly's other vibes players) is still performing and recording. (Philadelphia seems to have had it's share of vibes players. There was also Bill Lewis in the 70s & 80s, but he only recorded a few times.)

    That one's well worth hearing.
  17. I can't wait to hear this one. I don't know when I would be able to play it, though. Perhaps some long car ride when no one is around to be bothered. Just be careful. The driver of this vehicle got distracted while listening to a Brotzmann CD. Don't let this happen to you!
  18. It's a very nice one. Maybe a bit more 'inside' than some of his other recent releases.
