  1. I have a concern of a slightly different sort about the discussion here. That is, I'm glad to see Henry's so busy with his music, that he's enjoying himself, and doing well. I also hope that he's getting paid well for all the gigs he's playing and not just scuffling as a free jazz musician instead of scuffling as a janitor or whatever he was during the "lost" years. And maybe making a little extra to make up for all those lost years too!!
  2. Still have some copies of Mamet if anyone's interested. Also, calling any Nick Ayoub and vinyl fans. I have an ex-libris LP copy of The Music of Nick Ayoub with the Nick Ayoub Jazz Quintet. Recorded 1977 with Ayoub on reeds, Al Penfold on trumpet, and Art Roberts, Vic Angellilo, and Jacques Masson in the rhythm section. Radio Canada International 455. Has a couple small stickers on the back of the jacket and a small sticker and card pocket on the front, the jacket is in excellent structural condition and the vinyl is in great shape. Free, with free media mail shipping in the U.S., might have to charge a few bucks for international shipping but if you are interested let me know and we can work something out. Nice playing and nice record though the electric piano says "70s jazz" a little too loudly for my tastes.
  3. I splurged on a double CD set Henri Temianka: The Parlophone Recordings, 1935-1939 . $0.99, but with the 10% off only $0.89. They have a bunch of copies of it in the cutout bin but the cases are busted up on most of them. In case we didn't know it before, I guess it's now clear why they are going out of business: even at 10% off hardly anyone here is biting.
  4. Uh, I don't think so. That's clearly unethical, and I would think probably fraudulent, manipulation of the auction process. The item is supposed to go to the highest bidder, and requests/intimidation/collusion or whatever have no place in the auction process. If he is so determined to win the auction, there's a way to do that - bid higher than the other bidders.
  5. I agree. That album is almost enough to make an atheist get religion.

    Hal Russell

I would add a recommendation for "The Hal Russell Story". Wonderful music and very funny too. And although it doesn't address your question, the NRG albums after Hal passed are very good too - on Quinnah and Delmark.
  7. I've heard it, and I agree she's a fine singer, though I'm not much of a fan of singers in general. Also if I recall the saxophone stuff was fairly unusual - and it's certainly a great lineup - Booker T, Marion Brown, was Frank Lowe the third? Edit: Uh, not even close - it is Jorge Sylvester.
  8. I hate to be the one to destroy the jocular mood with an attempt at a serious answer to your question, but here goes. For the one that's got no serial number, you could write it in yourself, right? It's handwritten so nobody will be the wiser. For the one that's botched, uh... well... let me see here... Oh, how about contacting Mosaic and see what they say? They'll probably send you a new booklet and then when the set goes out of print you can auction off the old one on eBay to cover your next Mosaic purchase. Or just leave it the way it is and keep your receipt so you've got proof of what it is. Now, please don't tell us that the serial number on the Jones is higher than the one on the Mulligan. If that's the case, you've got biiiiiiiiig problems.
  9. That's my recollection also. In fact, I think I have a copy but I would have to dig it out to be sure. Edit: Yes, I do have a CD copy, it came out on Bellaphon in 1993.
  10. So at what point is it time to get Action Jackson on the case?
  11. Chewy, not sure from your post, but are you also asking what an OBI strip is? I think it's the 3" x 5" (or so) piece of heavy paper that folds over the spine of the jewel case and has the title and such on it. The older Blue Note Conns in the U.S. had them, don't know if they still do or not. But, now I have a question - what does "OBI" stand for? Out But In?
  12. So what's the typical lapse between placing the order and receiving it? And is there an email confirming shipment? Not that I placed an order or anything -_-
  13. My karma could use an upgrade, so I'm offering the Scott Fields Ensemble's Mamet on Delmark. Little market value but it rates a 4.5 star artist's choice on AMG. I have several copies so feel free to request one even if you aren't first. These are new copies but will ship without the CD case internationally. I'll repost when I'm out. Band includes Michael Formanek and Michael Zerang. Since this isn't "worth" a lot I would say it's optional whether you want to offer something to other members as is standard practice in this thread.
  14. Indeed they are, I thought I remembered checking there but I must have remembered incorrectly. McGann, McGann, Playground, and Bundeena are all excellent. The first two are available on the Terra Nova imprint in the U.S. Looking through my stuff here I discovered a second copy of Bundeena. Paul, if you want it as part of the "Pay it Forward" game let me know by PM, I'll earmark it for you.
  15. I've searched the threads and found Bernie's name mentioned, but it looks like it's high time he's got his own thread as he will turn 70 next year according to his Wikipedia entry. He's a fine and distinctive Australian altoist who's sometimes been compared to Ornette, but that comparison's way off the mark as far as I'm concerned. He does have free-boppish overtones to his playing, but he's not as hard-edged or free as prime Ornette. Many of his records have been put out on the Rufus records label (Rufus Records) and a couple were reissued in the U.S. and are available used for next to nothing on Amazon. I'm two CDs behind on him - Live at Side On and Blues for Pablo Too. Anyone heard these two or know of a good outlet for them in the U.S.?
  16. I was putting together my Concord sale order the other day and looked up Yanow's AMG review of this album. Something about his negative assessment made it seem worth a try, especially at $2.98. So I threw it in the cart, and only now stumbled onto this thread. Now let's hope it actually shows up in my order. Gotta' love a forum that sports an extended discussion of an obscurity like this.
  17. No, I don't have any problem with jazz French horn, I really like Tom Varner's stuff. Just not impressed with Watkins on this CD. Interesting to hear others' comments though.
  18. I stumbled onto a copy of Les Modes' (a.k.a. The Jazz Modes) Mood in Scarlet CD. I have to say, I'm not at all impressed with Julius Watkins' French horn playing. I know he was an innovator as a jazz French hornist, but was any of his playing actually any good? By the way, Charlie Rouse is terrific on this CD.
  19. I have. If WBEZ's programming was fairly vanilla, WDCB's is even less interesting. Then again, I'm a partisan of the far more cutting edge WNUR show.
  20. Not to mention that they didn't find a gun, at least according to the newspaper accounts. Kind of hard to shoot yourself to death and dispose of the weapon. Oh well, I'm sure the NYPD is hard on the case
  21. Allen, can you mention a possible motive without treading on legalistic thin ice?
  22. Thanks Chalupa, I saw these online but they are contemporaneous with his death in 1999. I was wondering what if any information about his death has emerged in the ensuing almost 7 years now.
  23. Does anyone know whether there has been any progress in solving the murder of Jaki Byard? [Edit] Come to think of it, has his cause of death even been established as murder? I know it was a gunshot wound and there was at least speculation that he was murdered, but I don't know what the police or coroner's determinations were.
  24. It took you long enough! Heh heh heh, just kidding of course. On behalf of the original poster on the NASA (that's North American Saxophone Alliance) list, thanks Michael. I figured somebody would come through here, though I didn't expect this much info so fast! I'll pass the information along with appropriate credit to you and this list. Glenn
