Oh boy do we disagree on this one, but I generally detest Parker's plodding, self-indulgent, antithesis of swing playing. One of the most painful musical experiences was having to sit through his 20-minute solo when I saw Dave Burrell's trio with him & Cyrille. I know some people love Parker's playing. I just don't get it. Seems to me that he's the polar opposite of what both Ornette and Rollins should have (though when it comes to bass players it appears that Rollins has chosen friendship and loyalty over musical sense). I think Greg Cohen was the most perfect acoustic bass player for Ornette since the '60s.

I would throw "artisinal" in there, too. A mediocre pizza by the slice joint in my neighborhood recently hung a new awning that says it's a "Cucina Artigianale."

I knew Cliff Edwards recorded scat before Louis, but apparently there were even earlier examples: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scat_singing#Origins

I thought of Peacock as a natural for a Rollins-Ornette meeting because he comes out of the same milieu as Haden & LaFaro (i.e., post-Red Mitchell L.A. bass playing), and has worked with a number of Rollins' past sidemen, especially DeJohnette & Bley. He certainly would have been a natural for the Cherry-Bley edition of Sonny's band.

I've seen him several times since his comeback. I wouldn't take the same risk.

Thank you! June Lockhart Lassie Lasse Hallstrom One of the first concerts I ever attended as a kid was the Shindig Review at the NY Academy of Music on 14th St. (later The Palladium). Steve Alaimo was on the bill along with The Dixie Cups, The Dovells, and making his singing debut...Rosey Grier!

I agree, and they also don't nearly compare with Handy's work with Mingus at the time. His playing on Wonderland and Mingus Dynasty in particular is impeccable.

Yes, and on the odd chance the price were to drop below what I'm currently being charged (which is lower than the current price displaying for the item) then my total would go down. I once got them to give me credit because there was a pretty significant price drop on a non-preorder item between the time I placed the order and when it shipped. They had already charged me because the order was at the preparing for shipping stage. So it always pays to ask if you see something like this.

I was lucky to be in SF to catch this: Thursday, November 2, 2000 SFJazz Presents: A Salute to Eddie Marshall In this specially priced event, the Festival honors a drummer of international stature who makes his home here in the Bay Area: the great Eddie Marshall. A longtime collaborator of jazz masters like Stan Getz, Toshiko Akiyoshi, and the stellar musicians on this bill, Marshall has had an incalculable influence on the evolution of jazz in San Francisco over the past quarter-century. He continues to move the music ahead with his latest band, Holy Mischief, which performs in this concert. Joining Marshall on the Masonic stage is world-renowned vocalist and conductor Bobby McFerrin, who credits some of his "most cherished memories of making music" to his 20-year history with Eddie Marshall. Also performing with and in honor of Marshall are jazz vibraphone great Bobby Hutcherson and his quartet, with trumpet legend Freddie Hubbard as special guest. The evening is capped off with the historic reunion of Marshall’s influential fusion band, The Fourth Way. Anyone else see this show? I can't remember if Freddie made it, and Mike White played very poorly as he also did when I saw a Handy Quintet reunion at Iridium.

I got rid of my land line and ported my old number to a VOIP service, Callcentric. I pay about $3.50 a month for the service including voice mail and 1.5 cents a minute for outgoing calls, which I rarely make (I use my cell for most calls). My cell is a simple flip phone. I have a Verizon voice-only plan and get a 20% discount through work. I scaled back to "basic" cable from Time-Warner--just broadcast channels and C-SPAN, basically. I watch Netflix streaming through a networked Blu-Ray player. I just got rid of my DVD component with the price hike. I watch MSNBC for free online at: http://www.rentadrone.org/msnbc-live-rockinroosters/ The same site also has CNN, CNBC, FOX, BBC, Al Jazeera. All told, my total monthly expense for Cable, Cable Internet, Cell Phone, VOIP and Netflix is under $150.

Probably depends on demand. As soon as lots of people start ordering it at the lower price, they jack the price a little. Free enterprise, you know. There should be a futures market for this stuff.
