  7. The Anita O'Day in series 4 is fabulous, and the Blakey/Hubbard is a bit uneven but generally good. I agree with Larry on the Farmer--a surprise highlight for me--while I do like Farmer, he has never been prominent in my listening or collection, but this DVD is really great.
  8. Series 5 finally announced. Most artists are repeats, but who's complaining? July 26, 2011- Series 5 Coming Soon! Hello friends, Reelin' In The Years Productions and Mosaic Records are pleased to announce the release of the 5th installment of the celebrated Jazz Icons® series. Details will be announced in the coming weeks but here are the six titles: John Coltrane- Live In France 1965 Thelonious Monk- Live In France 1969 Freddie Hubbard- Live In France 1973 Johnny Griffin- Live In France 1971 Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers- Live In France 1959 Rahsaan Roland Kirk- Live In France 1972 They're all from France, so it looks like they're getting the whole bunch from ORTF this time. I'm looking forward to the Coltrane Antibes performance in hopefully better quality--He did two shows there, and AFAIK only the show without A Love Supreme has been available among collectors. It would be great if there's also film of the Love Supreme concert. It looks like Mosaic has replaced Naxos as their new partner. I'm guessing the Kirk is from the same tour as The One Man Twins at Montreux. This will be their third Blakey, I'm guessing it's the one that was released as a boot by Impro-Jazz.

    Prez is here!

I guess Granz is the common thread, but it's an odd mix of tracks from multiple sources and times. I have the Duke item on this DVD: http://www.jazzloft.com/p-47006-at-the-cote-dazur-with-ella-fitzgerald-joan-mirothe-last-jam-session.aspx

This may be tough for Mosaic to pull together, as they would have to draw from at least four labels to gather it all: Drumfusion (Columbia) A Different Journey (Reprise) Passin' Thru (Impulse) Man From Two Worlds (Impulse) Transfusion (Studio West) I agree that these are all fine records, and would make an excellent set. The last one consists of short tracks recorded for the US Navy, and first issued in the 1990's. Perhaps not as essential as the others, but interesting. Lloyd is also on Chico's previous Columbia LP ("The Chico Hamilton Special"), but the format is closer to the old Hamilton group, with cello and no Szabo. Szabo is also on The Further Adventures of El Chico and Chic Chic Chico.

Two mainstream jazz artists at the same time at the Knit: I'm guessing it was during one of their summer jazz festivals.

For me the working group with Lloyd and Szabo was one of the all time great jazz groups--anchored in mainstream while pushing the boundaries--like such other contemporaneous groups as McLean-Moncur & The John Handy Quintet. The Man from Two Worlds never fails to blow me away. The fifties stuff sounds too "period" to me. I saw him once, maybe 7 or 8 years ago in Seattle, and he sang several tunes, quite awfully.
