  2. Twardzik has the "legendary" mystique, and he is great, but I prefer Freeman, who is truly underrated.
  3. The Prince Lasha material from Berkeley and Monterey is fantastic. I have LP rips I found online. This stuff should get a decent CD treatment.
  4. I met Donald Elfman at a Joel Forrester show and told him how indebted I was to him for putting out the Handy Columbias when he was at Koch. The CD I have of In the Vernacular sounds poorly mastered. I wonder if the flaws are in the original source.
  5. I was charged $29.45 after pre-ordering originally at about $36. The current price Amazon is showing is $30.55. What's with all the pre-release price fluctuations?
  6. The Amazon price is down to about $30.

  10. I remember that Braxton played one of the jam sessions around that time (maybe same year), at Carnegie. My friends and I were sitting next to an older, very patrician looking couple. "What do you think of that Anthony Braxton?" the woman asked us. I thought it odd that somebody who looked 'old and straight' would single out Braxton. "He's great," I said, "but this is an unusual setting for him." The woman beamed a big smile and said, "He's our son-in-law!"

  15. Sony bought Mainstream because it released the first Big Brother and the Holding Company album, and Columbia wanted to add it to their Janis properties. They pretty much ignored the catalog except for repackaging some Sarah Vaughan & Carmen McRae albums (both were at their peak during those years). It appears that some titles have been released through the Japanese P-Vine label. I love Charles McPherson's Today's Man, with great Ernie Wilkins charts. IIRC, Mainstream had a "Time Series" for rereleases of Time material.

  17. Melons in NY generally suck. Except at farmers markets very little produce is local. Everything comes from different places depending on time of year.
