I agree...how many of the first few batches of Connoisseurs have been reissued, at this point? I agree the stuff should be in print...but it would be nice to see the stuff that's never hit CD or, better yet, never had any U.S. issue or reissue of any sort!!!

organissimo wants to play in YOUR TOWN
Peter Johnson replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in organissimo - The Band Discussion
B-3er, I can get your stuff in the hands of Ortleib's (click here) and Bob and Barbara's (click here and here). Let me know! PJ -
Cribbing this straight over from the "catching up with Tom Evered" thread at AAJ. Interesting information! Well, I'm glad I spent time and energy finding some of this OOP stuff True Blue? Basra???!!! This is just further proof that if I can find it, it's guaranteed to be reissued!

So, what is an Organissimo anyway?
Peter Johnson replied to BeBop's topic in organissimo - The Band Discussion
Maximum Organ! Jim, I think you should change the name of the band--that's great! -
Up for additions, price changes and weekend air!

I'd love one! Email address is: bmwbikeman@hotmail.com Thanks in advance, big wheel! -
Aaaaaaaack! Wrong again...on so many levels! Oh well. At least I got KD and CF on disc 1...my (one and only) personal shining BFT moment!
-
Here goes...continuing my thoughts (sad, stab-in-the-dark-guesses?) over to disc 2. 1. Summertime. Can’t miss that chord progression. Piano players (there’s definitely more than one. Could this be “The Contemporary Ensemble”, a CD I’ve long since lost (and wish I still had)? Nice and bluesy, the way this song should be. Nope—it’s stone live, so it’s something I’ve not heard. Lord, Lord LORD they’re swinging it home! 2. This almost sounds like it could be Metheny, but the guitar sound is a bit different. I’m kind of snoozing on this one—sounds like the last song of a last set on a Saturday night. Good for a mood, but it doesn’t do much for me. 3. Aaaaaa. What is this song. I have something like six versions of it! I can never think of the names when I hear them in this context. I like this version—sounds post-1980 to me—but don’t have it. Nice, competent ensemble; pianist likes to throw chords in that aren’t in the chart every once in a while, and I like it. 4. Another tenor! I like this a lot. It’s sort of post-bop crossed with blaxploitation soundtrack—dipping into the early 70’s to get a nice funk beat/bassline. I have no idea what this is, but I’m going to have to be on the lookout for it. I don’t like the piano tone—it sounds like a Yamaha spinet or other weak instrument—but it’s good stuff. 5. Hmmmm…a little snippet of Lou live (nice cut, Dan) with the Turbanator. This has got to be one of Lou’s BN records (I think this is only the second track on the BFT without a piano!). I’m pretty sure this is from http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detai...=glance&s=music 6. A little barrelhouse action—well, not really I guess; don’t really care for this one. I have no idea who it is, but it’s got the classic blues turnaround again. NMCOT. 7. Can I get an AMEN! Get that Hammond on full stops! This is great stuff—very obscure. I have no idea who’s playing (could be one keyboardist, not sure). Very greasy, very lazy tune. I love it. 8. Started out thinking this was Ray’s Rockhouse…but it’s clearly not. Sounds like it could have been touched by Oliver Nelson; I really like this one. I can’t tell how old the recording is; I suspect it’s on the recent side based on the way the piano was mic’ed (it wasn’t Rudy, that’s for sure!) which is the only negative I have for this track. Nice lazy trumpet solo. I’m going to have to look for this one when I figure out who it is. 9. Is this Stan the Man Turrentine? I think it has to be, but the “echo chamber” makes it not one of his BN recordings. Wait, again I know the tune but can’t place it. Almost sounds like a revamped version of ST & the 3 sounds, with a less-firey pianist than Gene Harris. Maybe this is a straightahead tune from one of Stan’s CTI recordings. Nice. 10. I have this track, but I don’t know what it’s from. Again, Webster-ish tone for that tenor player; I wonder who it is (particularly since I have it). I like this one and pull it out on Sunday mornings…but I can’t…figure…it…out!!! Well, that was great fun, Dan—thanks for a compilation of some seriously dirty, greazy blues. This one will be staying in heavy rotation for a while, and I have a feeling that it will force an increase in my music-buying budget as well! Can’t wait to hear the answers!

Should I stay in Philly or move to Seattle?

Thanks for the feedback, everyone; you bring up interesting issues, and different perspectives to the table--I appreciate it. 1/3 to 2/3! Interesting... No decision yet! -
The One-Question International Driving Test

The TVR is good for that, no doubt! -
Some background--as objectively as I can state it. I trust nobody employed by my firm is a member of this board! Gail (my wife) and I moved to Philadelphia from Seattle in 2001 for her residency. We love Philly, and, although I can see myself living here for the duration, Gail has decided that she will not ultimately be happy unless we have a plan to get back to the Pacific Northwest--at some time. When we moved here, I found a position with a law firm I love. Love. Best job I've ever had. When Gail finished her residency, she found a position with a pediatric practice she loves--best job she's ever had. We bought a house in Philly, have made great friends here--it's all good. Recently, I flew back to Seattle to interview with a great firm there. Long story short, it felt like a great fit, and they offered me a position starting January 2005. I'm sitting on the offer now--no real deadline to accept/reject, but I need to fish or cut bait soon. Now we're in a quandry and don't know what to do. Gail's position is contracted through June 2005, and a bicoastal marriage (for a defined period) is no problem for us (been there, done that). Of course, we would prefer to keep the duration of that to a minimum. Issue: legal jobs in the PNW are few and far between. If I reject this job, there might not be another one in a comparable firm in my field (trusts and estates) for some time to come; this can be problematic as time creeps on and I try to "switch coasts" without a good portable book of business. On the other hand, if a firm is willing to hire me now, what's to say one wouldn't hire me in a year? I should also say that the 1/1/05 start date is a bit of a negotiation already; they want me now, I want them next June. So my question for you, my dear, esteemed fellow board members, is this: what the hell should we do? Probably the most important facts here are: a) we own a house; b) we have most of our family in the PNW; c) we will have kids at some point in the near future; d) we love our current positions. I know this is asking for responses in a vacuum, but I really trust all of your judgment and would really appreciate your input. As you can probably tell, I'm really struggling with this, so please, please chime in with any questions you might be asking if faced with a similar situation. Thanks so much for the feedback--I truly appreciate it.

One day, I'll get more than one track right! Telling you, this BFT has me coming back for more info more than most! Dan, ever the trickster.

No, I think we got 7... But previous mentions of 5 as being "The Preacher" plus others' insistence (myself included) that 5 includes Gene Harris haven't led me to anything in allmusic! AMG ain't dispositive, of course, but the only entries for Horace Silver + Gene Harris are Nica's Dream and Strollin'. Hmmmmmmmm...
-
Of course not! It's just nice to be in the same boat as others... Do we have confirmation on track 5?
-
I meant to add that it's pretty pathetic. Hey! Speak for yourself! It's amazing how hard this can be without a reference point...somehow you listen to a recording enough and think you'd "name that in three notes," but stuck in the middle of a compilation, or if you haven't just been listening to the record, it's just not that easy! Thus the large number of "I KNOW I have this record" guesses in my responses... Still fun, though!
-
Oh my god, I got the trombonist right too!!! THANKS, DAN!
-
Me too! Probably my first correct guess ever!

What non-music magazines do you subscribe to??
Peter Johnson replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
The New Yorker (weekly)--can't say enough good things about it. The Economist (weekly)--top notch for world and business news. Fairly objective. Dirt Rag (8 issues/year)--for that mountain biking jones. Couldn't possibly keep up with more. -
Time to post my replies. I was away last weekend, so couldn’t get to the writing. But I certainly listened in the airplane! I haven’t looked at any of the responses yet, so here goes. Thanks for a great comp, Dan—not sure if I picked out an overriding theme, but there’s certainly a focus on the piano. This will be another in a series of “Peter’s picks that are all wrong and give readers of this thread no clue as to who is playing on any of the tracks.” Screw it—this is fun! 1. Not sure what this is, although I’ll guess it’s an early Ben Webster side—maybe he’s not the lead, but I think this tenor sounds like him. If it’s not him, I know I’ll whack my forehead when I find out who it is, because I’ve got some of his stuff. Not sure who the other players are. Hmmm, the guitar should give me a clue as to what this is, but it doesn’t…early ‘40’s recording? It’s gotta be a 78 rpm side, coming in at just over 3 minutes. 2. Another similar tenor vibe. I’m not sure who this is at all (probably Ben Webster, LOL). I can’t figure out whether this is studio or live…I’m thinking the latter, because the recording quality isn’t so hot. Traditional blues structure with a turnaround. Nice, but no surprises! 3. Ben Webster? Just kidding. Well, hell, maybe it is…I have no idea at this point! I like this a lot, and know I’ve heard it before. Could it be Warne Marsh? It sounds “west coast,” as much of a generalization as that is. 4. Another song I know I know (and have), although this isn’t the first or best-known version of it. Pianist meanders a bit and doesn’t do a lot for me—I’m kind of snoozing here, maybe it takes a few more listens. 5. This has GOT to be a Gene Harris side. Was the very last chord cut off? I thought this was from the It Club recordings, but I don’t hear any crowd noise, so it’s probably a Three Sounds record. Not sure which one, but I sure dig it! 6. More blues. More tenor. Always a great combo. Again, I’m not sure who the saxophonist is, but I’m going to guess (why the hell not?) Cannonball Adderly? I like this. 7. Stumped again! I know the tune, and again think I have it. I’m a sucker for trumpet/bone doubling, though; I would guess that it’s Curtis Fuller, but the sound of the recording makes me think otherwise. The bassist is pretty journeyman, though, and can’t hold a candle to the trumpet player (Kenny Dorham?) (watch, everytime I say something like that, it’s someone like Paul Chambers). Piano solo doesn’t really grab me either. I wonder, though, if this is some iteration of the Jazz Messengers. 8. Nice! This is a newer recording; Roy Hargrove? I like it a lot, but can’t figure out who it is. Again. 9. Nice large ensemble work—the arrangement is tight and interesting, and another tenor is featured. I think I’ve heard this before as well, but can’t figure it out. Got a nice swing feel to it. Could it be from a Buddy Rich-led record? I ask that because the drums are pretty far up in the mix. The bass player seems a little lost, though. I dig the bridge! 10. Well, if Allmusic allowed super-advanced queries, I could figure this version of Maiden Voyage out and at least feel good that I got one right…but it doesn’t! I’ve never heard this with an organ before, and I like it. I love the tone of this tenor player, but don’t know who it is. Unless it’s an obscure side with Wayne Shorter? Don’t think so. George Coleman (who I’m confident has an appearance on this disc)? 11. Obscure Elvin Jones or side? I don’t think so, but again, we’ve got the drums up in the mix, so it’s possible. I hear tenor and trombone (another great combo) and I think the piano sounds like Tyner; but the chord changes don’t hit me like any Coltrane I’ve heard. Well, as I said before…got no idea who any of these are, unless my wild-ass guesses on certain tracks are correct for others. Great comp Dan, thanks for sending it out (although you’re going to think I’m a total jazz poseur after reading my responses); I’ll get my responses to Disc 2 in shortly!

Got 'em in Philly last week. Thanks!

Another "single digit" dude "reporting for duty"! Also part of the BNBB diaspora, I didn't integrate well with AAJ--Mike's welcome over there couldn't have been friendlier, but I just couldn't get into it for reasons I can't explain. I was thrilled when Jim said, "I'll build a place" and others said "if you build it they will come", it happened, and I ran over and parked my ass on this stool for good. What a place--there are birthday wishes, people telling others when they're proud of something they've done, members congratulating those people for those accomplishments in turn, sympathy when needed and, sometimes best of all, just a lot of pure joy--like listening to Mingus X5 at volume 11! I was a long time lurker over at the BNBB (ever since Al Gore invented the internet) and hardly ever participated. I used the board more to get information to give, mainly because I didn't have much to give! My participation here has been much more frequent--the oft-used analogy of Org being a bar where you "know" everyone applies, and I consider the on- and off-board contacts and friendships I've made to be invaluable. I'm proud to be associated with you folks! Thanks for this wonderful place, Jim!
