  1. No, I think we got 7... But previous mentions of 5 as being "The Preacher" plus others' insistence (myself included) that 5 includes Gene Harris haven't led me to anything in allmusic! AMG ain't dispositive, of course, but the only entries for Horace Silver + Gene Harris are Nica's Dream and Strollin'. Hmmmmmmmm...
  2. Of course not! It's just nice to be in the same boat as others... Do we have confirmation on track 5?
  3. I meant to add that it's pretty pathetic. Hey! Speak for yourself! It's amazing how hard this can be without a reference point...somehow you listen to a recording enough and think you'd "name that in three notes," but stuck in the middle of a compilation, or if you haven't just been listening to the record, it's just not that easy! Thus the large number of "I KNOW I have this record" guesses in my responses... Still fun, though!
  4. Oh my god, I got the trombonist right too!!! THANKS, DAN!
  5. Me too! Probably my first correct guess ever!
  6. The New Yorker (weekly)--can't say enough good things about it. The Economist (weekly)--top notch for world and business news. Fairly objective. Dirt Rag (8 issues/year)--for that mountain biking jones. Couldn't possibly keep up with more.
  7. Time to post my replies. I was away last weekend, so couldn’t get to the writing. But I certainly listened in the airplane! I haven’t looked at any of the responses yet, so here goes. Thanks for a great comp, Dan—not sure if I picked out an overriding theme, but there’s certainly a focus on the piano. This will be another in a series of “Peter’s picks that are all wrong and give readers of this thread no clue as to who is playing on any of the tracks.” Screw it—this is fun! 1. Not sure what this is, although I’ll guess it’s an early Ben Webster side—maybe he’s not the lead, but I think this tenor sounds like him. If it’s not him, I know I’ll whack my forehead when I find out who it is, because I’ve got some of his stuff. Not sure who the other players are. Hmmm, the guitar should give me a clue as to what this is, but it doesn’t…early ‘40’s recording? It’s gotta be a 78 rpm side, coming in at just over 3 minutes. 2. Another similar tenor vibe. I’m not sure who this is at all (probably Ben Webster, LOL). I can’t figure out whether this is studio or live…I’m thinking the latter, because the recording quality isn’t so hot. Traditional blues structure with a turnaround. Nice, but no surprises! 3. Ben Webster? Just kidding. Well, hell, maybe it is…I have no idea at this point! I like this a lot, and know I’ve heard it before. Could it be Warne Marsh? It sounds “west coast,” as much of a generalization as that is. 4. Another song I know I know (and have), although this isn’t the first or best-known version of it. Pianist meanders a bit and doesn’t do a lot for me—I’m kind of snoozing here, maybe it takes a few more listens. 5. This has GOT to be a Gene Harris side. Was the very last chord cut off? I thought this was from the It Club recordings, but I don’t hear any crowd noise, so it’s probably a Three Sounds record. Not sure which one, but I sure dig it! 6. More blues. More tenor. Always a great combo. Again, I’m not sure who the saxophonist is, but I’m going to guess (why the hell not?) Cannonball Adderly? I like this. 7. Stumped again! I know the tune, and again think I have it. I’m a sucker for trumpet/bone doubling, though; I would guess that it’s Curtis Fuller, but the sound of the recording makes me think otherwise. The bassist is pretty journeyman, though, and can’t hold a candle to the trumpet player (Kenny Dorham?) (watch, everytime I say something like that, it’s someone like Paul Chambers). Piano solo doesn’t really grab me either. I wonder, though, if this is some iteration of the Jazz Messengers. 8. Nice! This is a newer recording; Roy Hargrove? I like it a lot, but can’t figure out who it is. Again. 9. Nice large ensemble work—the arrangement is tight and interesting, and another tenor is featured. I think I’ve heard this before as well, but can’t figure it out. Got a nice swing feel to it. Could it be from a Buddy Rich-led record? I ask that because the drums are pretty far up in the mix. The bass player seems a little lost, though. I dig the bridge! 10. Well, if Allmusic allowed super-advanced queries, I could figure this version of Maiden Voyage out and at least feel good that I got one right…but it doesn’t! I’ve never heard this with an organ before, and I like it. I love the tone of this tenor player, but don’t know who it is. Unless it’s an obscure side with Wayne Shorter? Don’t think so. George Coleman (who I’m confident has an appearance on this disc)? 11. Obscure Elvin Jones or side? I don’t think so, but again, we’ve got the drums up in the mix, so it’s possible. I hear tenor and trombone (another great combo) and I think the piano sounds like Tyner; but the chord changes don’t hit me like any Coltrane I’ve heard. Well, as I said before…got no idea who any of these are, unless my wild-ass guesses on certain tracks are correct for others. Great comp Dan, thanks for sending it out (although you’re going to think I’m a total jazz poseur after reading my responses); I’ll get my responses to Disc 2 in shortly!
  8. Got 'em in Philly last week. Thanks!
  9. Another "single digit" dude "reporting for duty"! Also part of the BNBB diaspora, I didn't integrate well with AAJ--Mike's welcome over there couldn't have been friendlier, but I just couldn't get into it for reasons I can't explain. I was thrilled when Jim said, "I'll build a place" and others said "if you build it they will come", it happened, and I ran over and parked my ass on this stool for good. What a place--there are birthday wishes, people telling others when they're proud of something they've done, members congratulating those people for those accomplishments in turn, sympathy when needed and, sometimes best of all, just a lot of pure joy--like listening to Mingus X5 at volume 11! I was a long time lurker over at the BNBB (ever since Al Gore invented the internet) and hardly ever participated. I used the board more to get information to give, mainly because I didn't have much to give! My participation here has been much more frequent--the oft-used analogy of Org being a bar where you "know" everyone applies, and I consider the on- and off-board contacts and friendships I've made to be invaluable. I'm proud to be associated with you folks! Thanks for this wonderful place, Jim!
  10. Never done that, myself...
  11. Wish list and search work fine for me...
  12. Ibid, shows at the VV in NYC last winter! Love him anyway! I saw him at the Vanguard too, about a year ago I think. He did all that and I loved it and I hope I get to see him again. About halfway through the set he also said, "We've had a few requests (long pause)...but we're gonna keep playin' anyway!" He also did "Whiskey Drinkin' Woman" and did a bit about meeting George Bush in the White House and not finding any weapons of mass destruction. I'll make the trip again to see him. I loved every minute of it. The place was packed and the crowd ate it up. Must have been the same show, ajf! The "WMD" version of whiskey-drinkin' woman was a scream. IIRC, it was the Saturday 8:00 show...sound right?
  13. Got it (them, ) today--listening to disc 1 right now! Tasty stuff--thanks a million, Dan. Looking forward to the discussion on this one!
  14. Couldn't agree more! I'm waiting with bated breath for a return engagement @ the VV, but their schedule only goes through September...
  15. Ibid, shows at the VV in NYC last winter! Love him anyway!
  16. Happy birthday, my friend! Great having you around again!
  17. Good news...glad all is well. Come back when you've got time, Tom!
  18. Zero, zilch, none, nada. Don't like box sets, never have. I prefer the individual albums.
  19. Recently noticed Rooster hasn't been around since mid-July; definitely not the norm for him! Maybe he's just on vacation--hope everything is alright!!!
  20. I've always loved the "wedge" bodies as well--always had a thing for the ragtop TR-7, myself. I guess my '92 saab 900 ragtop is a wedge of sorts...but that TVR, man...that puts the slob to shame, for sure! Congrats again on a great acquisition...you're making me think all over again about getting a project car!!!
  21. Motorcycle ride tomorrow morning, then listening to some music, probably cooking out...nothing scheduled, which is the POINT...first leisurely weekend to come my way in a while!!!
  22. Oops...responded before you got pic 2 up. Niiiice. Man, next time I'm in the UK I'm looking you up to go for a ride! How about a shot of the rear?
  23. OMFG, Tony that is sweeeeeet. I've always loved TVRs. You never see them in the states, but when I've been overseas and seen them, my jaw just drops. That's a beautiful ride--can we have a pic with the top dropped? PJ
