Well, after a few listens, I’m ready to tuck into this BFT and post some impressions. Great test—really enjoyable tunes and atmosphere throughout. 1. It always seems to be that I can never think of the names of the songs I know I know. This is the first time I’ve heard this (vocal) version, and although I’m not typically partial to vocals, I love this track. The arrangement is great, together with a barrelhouse boogie piano break! Parts of the arrangement actually sound like John Barry—the high trumpets, specifically—but I have no idea who’s singing. Not even going to embarrass myself by guessing. 2. Another one I know I know…but don’t know (even though I’m sure I have it. This will be a d’oh for sure)! Not sure what the arrangement is. At times sounds like Oliver Nelson…but I’m thinking the drummer has got to be Elvin. He’s all over the place!!! Wait a minute…is this this album ? Hmmmm… 3. Never heard this one before. My jazz guitar knowledge isn’t that broad, but if I had to choose, I’d say it sounds like Kenny Burrell. I like it, but I have no idea what it is. 4. I know I have this…I think it’s from this record I loved this when I bought it, and still do. Of course, I’m probably way off the mark! 5. Another one I’ve got in my collection. This sounds like Impulse-era JJ Johnson to me. Wait, I just put on the headphones. No way is this Impulse-era JJ. I have no idea what is. Bill Watrous, maybe? Hell, he’s the only other trombonist I know! Just kidding. It’s definitely later, and I think I was wrong about having it. Not sure I like it too much. Wait, is that Donald Byrd? Ah forget it. Lots of embarrassment for me this time around! 6. Very lyrical, but it’s putting me to sleep. I wonder how old this track is? Don’t know what or who it is. I think it’s too lyrical to be a piano roll, but that’s the vintage it seems to me. Not wild about it. “To the halls of montezu-u-ma”…What’s the name of that song? 7. Whoever this is was seriously influenced by Miles. I don’t think it’s MD himself because, sonically, it sounds too recent. This is a beautiful piece—I know I don’t have it, but I’ve gotta get it. Very good Sunday morning music. 8. Nice jump beat. Again, no idea who this is, but I feel like I should. The unison sax playing kicks some serious ass. 9. Must be cut from a 78. Is it early Billy Holiday? Bessie Smith? Again demonstrating ignorance in an entire genre. Love the track, love the clarinetist. 10. This isn’t to my taste—it sounds like one of those “Winter”/ “Spring” Windham Hill solo piano records. Watch, it will probably be Keith Jarrett, who I typically like. 11. Damnit—another one I know, and have, but can’t think of the name. Does this mean I have too much music? Love, love LOVE this track. This has got to be a Shorter/Byrd front line. It’s very chaotic --it must be from this record. 12. Love this one too—but although I’ve heard it, I know I don’t have it (but, in typical fashion, will shortly after I find out what it is). I don’t have a clue. Unless it’s late Rasaahn Roland Kirk. Which is pretty likely, the longer I listen to it! 13. This BFT is all over the board! This track is great! Space age bachelor pad indeed! Great, just what I need, another genre to explore. Unfortunately, there are 153 entries for this song on AMG, so I won’t even hazard a guess. 14. Standard that I played in jazz band. I'm pretty sure it's Tuxedo Junction. I like it, but have no idea who it is. Great way to end the test. Well, I had a blast with this test! Thanks for putting it together. I’m finally starting to feel like I know some of the tunes…only took 13 tests to get there. I’m pretty damn confident about one track—if I’m right, it will be cause for celebration! Oh believe me, I used to love driving fast...but I've got a strangely more "risk-averse" outlook now (and a car that doesn't do well over 85--maybe that's what I need to change!). The strange thing about flying is I can't figure out turned me into a scaredy-cat. I used to love turbulence, and take off and landing used to be the best parts of a flight for me. Sometime in the last year (I've flown across the country about six times in the last 9 months, above average but nowhere near the miles some of our members log) I just started getting freaked, like the plane would drop out of the sky at the first hint of turbulence. Rationally I know there's not a chance in hell...maybe it's discomfort with what is one of the few ultimate "lack of control" situations?

I'll bring it back to topic, because I think it's a good one. I'll be 33 on Friday; not particuarly dreading aging, although I am starting to develop a creeping sense of my own mortality. Recently, things like flying, driving fast and riding my motorcycle haven't been as fun as they used to be. I don't have kids, so I'm clearly concerned about leaving my wife alone and being able to take care of my parents as they age. This concern is exacerbated by the fact that I live 2500 miles away from my parents! That notwithstanding, I could stand to drop about 10 pounds. I run about 40 miles a week and have a good diet, but cannot get rid of that pesky remaining weight. I probably drink a little too much, and my profession (law) certainly helps that to occur (stress!). I smoked from age 18-28 with some degree of regularity, then quit cold turkey. Only a few relapses, which I've embraced wholeheartedly, usually when traveling (I know my wife won't catch me). I spent a shitload of time in the sun without sunscreen when I was growing up, so skin cancer is always a concern, but the dermatologist says everything checks out so far. Thought about going on antidepressants last winter, but changed my mind when the sun started showing up. And...would SURE love a bit of the green now and again (I grew up in the Northwest, for gods sake)...but in my line of work, there's too much risk associated with engaging in the required transaction! B)
