Good night, everyone--time to hit the sack. I've got to rest up...got a strenuous day of work tomorrow culminating in a 2:00 p.m. tee time. Gotta run!

Wow Nate! What a test. I didn't respond beyond my initial "thanks" response in the BFT thread because...well, I just simply had no idea. Nothing to add! This was a completely mindblowing experience, both from an "I think I might know what this is" perspective to a "this is completely new and off the hook and I've never heard anything like it" point of view. I'll be listening to and digesting the tracks on this BFT for some time to come. I echo the sentiments of those above who've said this test opened their eyes to the inherent organic nature of the music we love...thanks for compiling this. Truly enjoyable, challenging, and many MANY thumbs up. PJ

Do you buy music faster than you listen to it?
Peter Johnson replied to Bright Moments's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Dan puts his finger on the reason why I answered "no" to the poll! But as far as the aquisition of new tunes...well, suffice it to say that CDR's take up very little physical space (1.5 mm per disc in width/height?); however, the 80 minutes per side has sure bolloxed up my ability to listen to every minute of music I own before I shuffle off this mortal coil! -
Just had a warm flourless chocolate cake with, get this, balsamic vinegar drizzled over it. It may sound weird, but it was delish. We asked the chef about it, and he said he just happened on it by accident; he was in the kitchen with some fallen chocalte cakes, and knocked over the vinegar. The vinegar spilled on the cake, and voila! He stumbled upon the perfect combination of sweet and...well, not salty, but "not so sweet." Yummmmmmm. Very good with red wine...but that's another thread!

When was the last time you got shit faced?
Peter Johnson replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Hey Hardbop, how's the bottle treating you? My wife and I just had dinner at our favorite restaurant in town; brought 2 bottles of Cotes du Rhone. Polished one off with dinner, had 1/2 of the next over dessert (lest you think we're gluttons, we tend to go out and split a salad and split the entree, just like seniors ) and left the remainder for the chef (Philly has a lot of BYOB restaurants because it's so bureaucratic to get a liquor license. Good for the wallet, good for the tolerance, bad for the liver!). A good night indeed! I think I'll go listen to some Horace Parlan while I prepare to face another workday! -
Is that all? Thanks, Claude--neat stuff.

I think I do too...what am I missing?

I'll occasionally indulge with some solo vino when my wife is on call, working late, whatever; I usually start with a little Trane, Blue Train or Trane's Blues, segue into some Davis w/ HH et al quintet work, and progress into some Rare Groove material. Also, my ADD will kick in when I'm hitting the red wine, and I'll start playing one track off of this, one track off of that, free-forming and free-associating the mix as I go. I usually try to record this, so in the morning I've got a stack of mis-matched CDs/records and albums, and one sweet wine-infused mix. In fact, this is probably how I'll put my future (not signed up yet, but eventually) BFT together!!! -

Dammit, c500, I just ordered this from Dusty "the bastards" groove. Yesterday!!! Oh well. -
Hey folks. I'm going to Vegas in a few weeks for a friend's wedding (don't ask). When I was there before, I found a great record store that had a ton of old BN wax, and that's what I'm hunting for this time. Does anyone have any recommendations? It's not your typical "destination" for a trip to Vegas, but I'm sure some things get pawned there! Recommendations appreciated, thanks!

Good luck Randy! That's a hell of an accomplishment to be 13th, and I hope you take it all the way to the top! -
Thanks for the heads'-up, Mike--this sounds like great stuff. Shamefully, as a pianist who spent a lot of time with the impressionist classics, I'm not certain I've ever heard any of his work. This board gets more and more expensive, but I'm going to see what I can do to pick this stuff up. Thanks!

What vinyl are you spinning right now??

Horace Parlan, "Headin' South". What a record! -
Big City vs. Small City living.
Peter Johnson replied to Matthew's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Having lived in both, I need to be in a city...otherwise I go stir crazy, my ADD flares up, and I start wandering around muttering to myself! That being said, there are a lot of cities that used to be considered "small" that are really rising in the ranks as far as restaurants, music, culture, etc., while retaining their small physical size/layout. Portland comes to mind, as discussed above...but when I left Portland in 1989, believe me, you did NOT want to live there. B-o-r-i-n-g. When I go back to visit, I'm astounded at the number of restaurants, wine bars, clubs, etc. that seem to be opening on a regular basis...and the people are generally nicer than those in Philadelphia, too...hmmmmmmmmmmm..... -
If you could be a fly on the wall.......
Peter Johnson replied to sheldonm's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Blue Train...one of the records that brought me to jazz in the first place, and still in my top five. Trane et al were ON that day, and I'm sure "me as fly" would have joined Alfred in his little dance... -
Do you lead a double life?
Peter Johnson replied to rockefeller center's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Of sorts. My "career me," while obviously informed by my personality and life in general, stays at the office when the "real me" leaves. The "real me" is not nearly as informed by my "career me." But no, I'm not an agency asset in Afghanistan at weekends, or anything! -
Another shout out for Barton hall..."take a step back"...but while you're at it, don't neglect 5/7/77 and 5/9/77. I don't know what was going on that week, but that's one of the smokingest periods in GD performance history, imho...all three shows are up at archive.org, in good sound, and are worth the d/l time and space.

Marcus, my friend--I'm all over it. Let me know if you need stateside distribution help. PM on its way with address. Best, PJ

If he's not a minor, it goes from being a "contract" to a CONTRACT, and is legally enforceable. That doesn't automatically mean you can sue; depending on the wording of the ebay terms which you both accepted, you might be forced into arbitration, either binding (the result is your only recourse) or nonbinding (the result is advisory, but if you don't like it, you can take it to court). If you're not channeled straight into an alternative dispute resolution method, depending on the value of the horn, you could file suit in small claims court in your jurisdiction. You would almost be guaranteed to win, but there are complicated requirements regarding serving papers to the other side, etc. If they don't show up (how far are they from you?) you can get a default judgment...but collecting it may be tough.

Sorry to have dropped the ball on keeping this rolling, guys...that will teach me to pick something and then go on vacation...didn't even post impressions of my own choice...urgh. Mea culpa, and I'll get on the stick this weekend and contribute to my own damn thread...
