  3. Thanks for the feedback, guys; looks like I'm going to have to open the wallet again. This has been a baaaaad month...
  4. Hey folks, Just got an email from BN saying this is going OOP. Frankly (blasphemy!) I'd never heard of these recordings until I got this email. I love Criss' Prestige side (nonet/Birth of the New Cool--I think it was AOW back in early 2003), so I ask you, gentle readers: Should I get this? Thanks for the thoughts/recs.! edited to correct terrible gaffe on the name of the album
  5. Nate, you've got PM!
  6. Have a great day, Gary!
  7. Hey Bill! Welcome back! It's been a while since we've seen you around...hope your schedule will allow you some time to check in while you're in the midst of teaching those little buggers where middle C is!
  8. BFT #15 has hit these shores. Thanks Marcus! PM your way...
  9. Pm'd you about Gil Melle....
  10. I'll do Philadelphia: Philadelphia Record Exchange. Has a huge selection of vinyl, and you get lucky with the occasional hard to find BN, Impulse, Prestige, etc. side. They rarely have first pressings, though, and their prices are all over the board. Picked up a NY, USA pressing of Blue Train in great shape there for $5.99; the next week they were trying to sell a fair liberty pressing of Sidewinder for $75.00. Go figure. Their CD selection (jazz) is spotty; the occasional OOP gem will turn up, and will never be more than $9.99, but you have to look. They have an excellent used Classical CD selection with lots of interesting stuff, and used copies of the planks in the platform of the repertoire. 618 S 5TH St Philadelphia, PA 19147 Phone: (215) 925-7892 Open daily, 12pm-8pm Cue Records. This is a place for the drum and bass and DJ heads. But surprisingly, they have an excellent selection of used wax in the soul and jazz categories. I've found some excellent hard to find vinyl here. There's one section for each of the above-mentioned categories, and there's crossover between the two and misalphabetization (Lee Morgan filed under "L" in Soul), so you've got to go through everything if you're a serious crate digger. They also have new vinyl reissues in the above categories sprinkled throughout the store; I'm sure they have, for example, unopened wax copies of Soul On Top, recently discussed here. CD section isn't worth looking at unless you're into dub, trance, electronica, etc. 617 S 4TH St Philadelphia, PA 19147-1545 Phone: (215) 413-3525 Open Mon-Thu 12pm-9pm, Fri-Sat 12pm-10pm and Sun 12pm- 7pm
  11. Hey Chris! Happy birthday!!!
  12. From the art museum looking back toward the city:
  13. I want it! PM on the way! How about uncooked rubles from the former Union of Soviet Socialist Republics?
  14. Good night, everyone--time to hit the sack. I've got to rest up...got a strenuous day of work tomorrow culminating in a 2:00 p.m. tee time. Gotta run!
  15. Wow Nate! What a test. I didn't respond beyond my initial "thanks" response in the BFT thread because...well, I just simply had no idea. Nothing to add! This was a completely mindblowing experience, both from an "I think I might know what this is" perspective to a "this is completely new and off the hook and I've never heard anything like it" point of view. I'll be listening to and digesting the tracks on this BFT for some time to come. I echo the sentiments of those above who've said this test opened their eyes to the inherent organic nature of the music we love...thanks for compiling this. Truly enjoyable, challenging, and many MANY thumbs up. PJ
  16. Dan puts his finger on the reason why I answered "no" to the poll! But as far as the aquisition of new tunes...well, suffice it to say that CDR's take up very little physical space (1.5 mm per disc in width/height?); however, the 80 minutes per side has sure bolloxed up my ability to listen to every minute of music I own before I shuffle off this mortal coil!
  17. Just had a warm flourless chocolate cake with, get this, balsamic vinegar drizzled over it. It may sound weird, but it was delish. We asked the chef about it, and he said he just happened on it by accident; he was in the kitchen with some fallen chocalte cakes, and knocked over the vinegar. The vinegar spilled on the cake, and voila! He stumbled upon the perfect combination of sweet and...well, not salty, but "not so sweet." Yummmmmmm. Very good with red wine...but that's another thread!
  18. Hey Hardbop, how's the bottle treating you? My wife and I just had dinner at our favorite restaurant in town; brought 2 bottles of Cotes du Rhone. Polished one off with dinner, had 1/2 of the next over dessert (lest you think we're gluttons, we tend to go out and split a salad and split the entree, just like seniors ) and left the remainder for the chef (Philly has a lot of BYOB restaurants because it's so bureaucratic to get a liquor license. Good for the wallet, good for the tolerance, bad for the liver!). A good night indeed! I think I'll go listen to some Horace Parlan while I prepare to face another workday!
  19. Is that all? Thanks, Claude--neat stuff.
  20. I think I do too...what am I missing?
  21. I'll occasionally indulge with some solo vino when my wife is on call, working late, whatever; I usually start with a little Trane, Blue Train or Trane's Blues, segue into some Davis w/ HH et al quintet work, and progress into some Rare Groove material. Also, my ADD will kick in when I'm hitting the red wine, and I'll start playing one track off of this, one track off of that, free-forming and free-associating the mix as I go. I usually try to record this, so in the morning I've got a stack of mis-matched CDs/records and albums, and one sweet wine-infused mix. In fact, this is probably how I'll put my future (not signed up yet, but eventually) BFT together!!!
  22. Dammit, c500, I just ordered this from Dusty "the bastards" groove. Yesterday!!! Oh well.
  23. Hey folks. I'm going to Vegas in a few weeks for a friend's wedding (don't ask). When I was there before, I found a great record store that had a ton of old BN wax, and that's what I'm hunting for this time. Does anyone have any recommendations? It's not your typical "destination" for a trip to Vegas, but I'm sure some things get pawned there! Recommendations appreciated, thanks!
