  1. I just received a YourMusic order that shipped on July 9, 2006!
  2. Tonight it's Peter Brotzmann at Tonic. I've never been a huge Brotzmann fan, but I'm pretty excited about this show.
  3. Tonight: Sylvie Courvoisier and Mark Feldman @ Tonic. This is not a show I'd normally go to (especially on a Tuesday night), but with Tonic closing it's doors this week it's a no-brainer. This was a much better show than I expected. The opening act was atrocious, but Feldman and Courvoisier were really on tonight.
  4. They've got a couple shows coming up in Italy, too. Should be good. I'd be tempted to hop over there if I hadn't been to London twice in the last few months already.
  5. I'm going Thursday night - got my tix yesterday. I think it's Abercrombie at Birdland on Thursday for me. You know the two big modern jazz guitarists that I've never been able to get into are Abercrombie and Matheny. Can you recommend a good entry point?
  6. Yep - I saw them last week at Tonic and they were pretty good.
  7. Another recent article, with a little new detail (not much). This article also implicates [sort of] the newer nicotine-based insecticides. I would really like to see the mainstream press pick up on this, but am not holding my breath. http://www.physorg.com/news95135881.html

  9. I'm definitely going to keep an eye out for him in the future. Not necessarily the kind of thing I'd want to listen to on a regular basis, but it is really impressive to watch. Tonight: Sylvie Courvoisier and Mark Feldman @ Tonic. This is not a show I'd normally go to (especially on a Tuesday night), but with Tonic closing it's doors this week it's a no-brainer.
  10. The boxes arrived today looking good. Thanks, Kevin. PS: Just for the record, the above post was only a joke.
  11. These were all previously available, weren't they?
  12. The Lone Hill is just master takes and only 3CDs/19 tracks. The Mosaic is masters + alt takes, 6 CDs/32 tracks. Missing from the Lone Hill are alt takes of: Lean Baby, Robins' Nest, How Hi the Fi, Don't be that Way, Undecided, Rock-A-Bye Basie, Out of Nowhere, Blue Lou, Broadway, All the Cats Join In (alt + insert), After Hours and Don't Miss Your Baby.
  13. While we are on the subject, does anyone have a list of the OJC RVGs? I don't think I realized that there were any new reissues in this series.
  14. I've seen it around NYC - apparently DMG is selling it for $120.
  15. I'd love to, but the thing is I only had one Tristiano Mosaic before and it looked so lonely on the shelf by itself.
  16. I guess I more or less come down with Claude and Cliff - for BN the series made sense, because the old issues generally sounded pretty bad and there was a lot of unreleased material. For the OJC catalog, the phrase "if it ain't broke don't fix it" comes to mind. But it is probably stirring up a few extra sales for them which was obviously the point to start with.
  17. Ohhhh.... that's what they mean by "no known recording" - got it.
  18. Sorry to hear that the sound is so bad on the Coltrane/Henderson recordings... has anyone heard the session quoted above? That is a pretty interesting/surprising lineup of tenors.
  19. Hmmm... I got a shipping notice this morning...
  20. Looks like I don't have much to worry about.
  21. It's obviously a matter that requires discretion. If you're seeing Bill Frisell and he is playing a ballad so softly that you can hear the guitar acoustically as much as you hear it through the amp, that is a very different matter from if you're seeing, say, John Zorn blow his lungs out. As much as talking at an inappropriate level at an inappropriate time has bugged me on occassion, I have to say that the strict policies of a place like The Stone create an uptight atmosphere that somewhat lessens my ability to enjoy the music. (MAN I'm going to miss Tonic...)
  22. I looked into this a little in my spare time, and it seems that there is little convincing evidence that this is the case (one major reason for doubt is that bees apparently are not very fond of corn). However, I wouldn't dismiss it out of hand... just saying that so far people who I believe have looked at the issue objectively have not found a convincing link. Just a quick edit to add that it seems that some researchers are becoming convinced that recently introduced nicotine-based insecticides may be to blame, at least in part.
  23. I'm guessing here, but it sounds to me like pedal tones are unstable partial waves in the horn.
  24. Exactly. That, and the indifference towards the message... (not talking about anyone around here).
