  1. Jeez, now that is a moral dilemma -- Tell him how much the Mosaics are really worth so he can take take care of his mother, or lie and get them cheap for yourself (like Jazzmoose, just kidding! Although, coming up with a fair price and offering them up here or on other jazz sites might get more of them in the hands of Jazz fans rather than rich collectors on Ebay. But, if the money is needed, by all means sell them on Ebay, spacing them out over a few months so as not to tap out bidders.)
  2. Dusty Groove lists 6 different compilation albums based on a single song: "Fever" "Sunny" "Sunny pt. 2" "Light My Fire" "Summertime" and the aforementioned "Take Five"
  3. 7/4, I feel your pain! Although I'm only 43, I've been falling apart lately. I recently got progressive lenses and after a couple days of getting used to them I like them fine. (the only thing getting better as I age is my CD collection )
  4. PM on the Manne.
  5. I make no apologies for my enjoyment of Ms. Krall’s music!
  6. I'm getting excited about this one! Krall album details
  7. No, NO! Anything but that!!
  8. Okay, I'll fess up. Early in my buying, before I became informed about partials. I bought some on ebay figuring that the rest of the set would come up eventually. They haven't. So, I'm hoping some of you may have some partials you would be willing to sell. I am not interested in any burns of the missing discs! I am looking for: Chico Hamilton discs 4, 5, 6 Sonny Stitt discs 7, 8, 9 I have asked mosaic about the Hamilton (they are out) but out of respect I did not ask them about the Stitt which is still in print. Thanks for looking!
  9. Wow at this buy-it-now price I'll take two! Cheap Mosaic!
  10. I'm on the fence about the New Orleans Sessions, but I just needed an excuse to buy the Tristano/Konitz/Marsh, so it is ordered Now, who can talk me into the New Orleans Sessions!
  11. Not being a musician I probably don’t have a right to say this but… Don’t many musicians simply have to play? I’m sure the business sucks and is getting worse all the time, but do most musicians go into it planning to be the next big thing? Joni hates the business, fine. Keep making music and forget the business. I doubt she needs the money (which she got from the business, I might add.) How does quitting show anyone anything? Sure Jazz is dying and overseas they treat jazz musicians better. That broken record has been playing since the 20s. Find a new tune or as he has decided quit.
  12. I guess I’ll be the contrarian and put in a good word for “Big Express” I can do without “Seagulls Screaming Kiss Her, Kiss Her” but certainly “Blue Overall” and “I Remember the Sun” rank up there with me. As far as the earlier, louder stuff goes “Go 2” (with the most brilliant cover ever) and “Drums and Wires” are exceptional. Also don’t overlook “Rag n’ Bone Buffet” or “Transistor Blast” (with the great version of “All Along the Watchtower”
  13. Dmitry- Just come up to Lebanon and you can listen to them all you want B) Lebanon was just voted one of the top 100 agriburbs in the nation (whatever that means) Any word on a return visit? I'll keep my eyes open for any elites. Alec
  14. No Way! What's that saying? "Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me!" B)
  15. I have to agree with the other about their cavats. Therefore, you need to leave them to ... ...me Pm me and I'll send you my address so you can forward the legal papers for me to sign.
  16. Patricia---- italics mine. The line about "teaching in college" clinches it for me. The principal didn't think he could relate to high school students. All the credentials and well-meaning intentions don't mean squat if you can't teach. You have to be able to clearly get your concepts across to the students. This isn't a case of a qualified teacher being 'too smart' this is the case of a smart man who lacks the training to be a teacher. I'm surprised that, as smart as he is, he views this as a "conundrum." I would be a simple matter to call the principal and ask what about his demeanor made the principal believe he would be better off applying to colleges for a job.
  17. Is it true that Carol King's father is ......
  18. Sorry to disillusion you folks, but many times the smartest people don’t make the best teachers (as a teacher I’m living proof of that B) ). Ability to teach is as, if not more, important than subject area knowledge, especially on a High School level. High expectations are good and necessary, but the tone of the reply seems to indicate that his personality and teaching skills were lacking. I would have loved to be a fly on the wall in that interview. I bet there was a lot more going on than he indicates in his column.
  19. Soulstation1 should have used this: Where to spend $$ (but the answer is wrong )
  20. Not to get on a soapbox, because I'm not a fan of his music either, but I don't think comments like "Kenny, You Queer" or "Fairy Fucker" and the like are either funny or appropriate.
  21. Sorry for the late reply. A very interesting double bill. Mehldau played first with a nice set. The only piece I was disappointed with was his version of Monk's "Skippy." He played it, if I dare use the word, too "nicely." I guess I'm used to Monk's more 'percussive' style on the piano. The Frisell was new to me as I only have his work with Elvis Costello. His first piece sounded to me like three players playing three different tunes at the same time. (you can tell I'm a big fan of 'free jazz.' )However, after the first song, there were some very enjoyable pieces. He played around with looping and sampling which I enjoyed, except his constant fiddling with whatever effect machine was for me a bit off-putting. I won't be rushing out to buy his stuff, but I gained an appreciation for it. Not so for the 1/8th or so of the audience who left during his performance!
  22. I sure was at the show! Sorry I wasn't thinking ahead or I would have said let meet for a drink before or after the show. I agree that Nate Smith did a great job. I'm looking forward to their new CD. (Jazzmataz has it listed for the summer). The hall as nice acoustics, and for me, it is easy to get to (a whopping 12 min drive). Let me know the next time you're up for a show. My wife and I are going the the Barbary Coast concert on Feb. 14th (Barbary Coast is the student jazz group)
  23. I wandered around the two sad CD stores in town that sell used CDs, not really expecting to find much and there was a used copy of "True Blue" for $6.99 B) Of course I bought it! (although I already had it) so now I'll trade it! Since I got it so cheaply (it is in good shape but does have a small cut in the spine; the jewel case has been replaced) I'm happy to trade it for almost anything I don't have. West Coast jazz, Soul jazz, hard bop, something new, etc. It doesn't need to be rare or out-of-print or difficult to find. I just want to pass this great deal on! pm me. Thanks for looking! ****ON HOLD****
  24. Jazzman4133-- I keep seeing on the Jazzmataz web site that Verve is (or was) planning on a complete McRae and Davis on Decca. Of course it has been on his site for over a year, but at least it is mentioned. Anyone have more info?
  25. TNOTBITH on CD is great news. Back in the day I downloaded it from "a friend" N. A. Pster as well as Byrne's "Music for the Knee Plays." Now when is that going to be out on CD?!
