  1. Just substitute CDs (or Lps) for Books! but I love the line: Happy New Year! --Claypone
  2. Ok, I tell everyone I want Mosaic for Christmas. My wife asks me to mark up a catalog for suggestions for my in-laws. I lament that I got no Mosaics for my birthday in November. So....What do I find under the tree this year?! NO Mosaics! Waaaaaaaaaaaaa!
  3. I haven't tried the new Napster, but I too like iTunes. I doubt that, for me, it will supplant buying regular CDs, but for a quick fix, some singles, or some of the exclusive content, it can't be beat. Also, we just got cable modem connection so I can really download now!
  4. Spontooneous has an interesting point about our usual encounters with instrumental music, although I don't think that we're conditioned not to listen, but rather we are conditioned not to analyze it in the same way as music with lyrics. Another problem is that many will put jazz on at a low volume, obscuring the details. My wife is a perfect example. She likes jazz at an almost sub-audible volume--in the background. She complains that I listen to it too loudly. I confronted her once when she was listening to talk radio. I turned the volume down to where she usually puts it for jazz and she complained that while she could hear it she couldn’t get everything they were saying---“Exactly!” I cried, when the music is too low you can’t get everything the musicians are saying! (She still doesn’t get it)
  5. Well, I just called and they won't send them through the mail. They wouldn't even tell me what they had! Oh well, thanks for the heads up anyway!

  7. I have an extra copy! sent you a message Claypone
  8. I haven't heard the Parker remix project, but I have heard both the "Verve Remixed" and the Madlib Blue Note projects. What I find most interesting about these projects is the discussions they engender. The questions of what is scared, what is creation, what is 'art', what is respect, what is despoilment, etc., are all good, valid, and necessary. I don't think there are right and wrong answers to these questions. Ask one and it only leads to more questions without answers. We all have to deal with the past and embrace/reject/accomodate/re-classify it as we see fit. We are all archeologists who mine the past for things we can use in the future. These remix projects remind me of the photomosaics. Half the fun of them is the ability to both explore the individual parts and then to step back and see the new image. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle or, if you are a cynic: "When the world is running down, you make the best of what's still around" --Sting I think that this remix phase is leading to something new---perhaps creating sound arraingers who are just as creative as those who make the sounds. ::stepping off box and returning to lurk mode::
  9. I have to second XTC's version of "All Along the Watchtower" and add Shawn Colvin doing "You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go."
  10. here is a link I just got for 15% off through Sunday! Stock up and enjoy! Borders 15% off
  11. Has anyone seen this avail stateside? I can't find a listing anywhere except the amazon.fr site. Thanks
  12. Have you looked at readerware? Readerware with the ability to use a cuecat barcode reader as well as drag-and-drop entry I have found it to be great to catalog my collection (2,500+) It is portable and relatively easy. You can also download it and try it out if you want. The CueCat reader is readly avail on ebay, and readerware sells it as a bundle with the program. Check it out. I have been very happy with it. Note: I have no connection with the company or anyone who works for Readerware. Claypone
  13. More money exiting my wallet oh well, my financial advisor told me to invest in CDs
  14. deus, great find! I just got the box today from a fellow board member for a bit more, but what a treat! Once again this board has convinced me to part with my hard-earned money . . . . . . and I couldn't be happier I got lots 'o listening in store for the weekend
  15. I just received another "all the CDs you want for $6.99 without having to join and no shipping charges" I love using it to stock up on stuff. They have a "send this offer to a friend" form so if anyone wants to see it let me know. Note: this is NOT a become a member offer. You can get the cds and you don't have to join! Claypone
  16. Tony- I checked out Dusty Groove and I couldn't find the Jazz in Paris set listed. Amazon lists it for over $500. Anyone know where to find it cheaper? Thanks
  17. I know I should put this is the offered and looking for thread, but I have an extra sealed copy of the Sonny Stitt (with the hole-y outer cover) I'd be happy to trade for. pm me if interested.
  18. does anyone else have a problem with the sound on Carmen Mcrae's "Birds of a Feather"? I am far from an audio snob, but this sounds awful to me; very echo-y with some distortion . I compared the song 'Baltimore Oriole' from the LPR to the Smithsonian American Popular Song collection and she sounds more up front without the echo-y sound. Is it just me? Also is there a Japanese version of 'Birds"?
  19. Peter-- Thanks for the heads up! I grabbed it
  20. I bought 'em all, due to the raves from you guys (and gals) on that "other" board. I admit there are a few I could do without (I never got into "Some Other Stuff" or Ornette) but I'm reluctant to part with any. The Conn and the Rare Goove series are two that I dearly love and wouldn't hesitate to buy whatever comes out. On the Verve side I have found the LPR series to be very uneven but I loved the "elite" series. (I say loved, but is the series really dead? Will they be coming out with more?) --Claypone
  21. Lots of great suggestions, but I'll add one more ---Carmen Mcrae Complete Bethlehem/Decca/Kapp. (I wouldn't mind seeing it like the complete Mercury Sarah Vaughan/Dinah Washington) I know Verve was planning on a Complete Mcrae/Sammy Davis Jr. set, but I have seen no word on that for a loooong time.
  22. Just wanted to add my 2 cents. Great CD! While its nice to support people you know, (well at least through the board), you can't really be sure of getting anything of quality. Not in this case! I would have bought it on first listen. Now if you would just tour in New Hampshire! Thanks again for the great music and I look forward to more!
  23. Does anyone have a complete list? Also, are they llike the "rare groove" series? You guys at the old board turned me on to those and I have tried to get them all. They are great. Thanks!
