What vinyl are you spinning right now??

I love this record, happy sounding and free wheeling. I think Richie needed a haircut though. -

Just finished - Richie Kamuca - Richard Kamuca Quartet 1976 (Jazzz) Now playing: The Jazztet And John Lewis - Featuring Art Farmer And Benny Golson (Argo) EDIT: The cover above is correct. They printed it in black & white, which caused the two 'J's and the 's' to disappear. Pretty ugly. -

I forgot another one: The 12th Annual John Coltrane Memorial Concert Before the show, they announced that Miles had died earlier in the day. They had Naima in the audience too. Memorable concert if only for the fact that it's not often that anyone attempts "A Love Supreme" in its entirety very often. -
It's weird when you read that story about the trip to South Africa and realize that both Andrew Gold & Don Grolnick are both gone now. Too young for both of them. BTW, I think that's Grolnick with the big gut in your picture.

Back in the day, I bought some of Ronstadt's albums for the covers and wound up keeping them for the music. The lady could sing. I've never even heard the Riddle LP. At the time it came out, it was not in my wheelhouse at all. Maybe I should give it a spin now.

I only know of a couple. Jim Hall's "Grand Slam: Live At The Regattabar" and Masada's "Live In Taipei 1995". -

That doesn't work on the double hubs - the ones where the single hub holds two CDs together. I had one Mosaic CD crack because of those double CD cases. I was so careful too but *crack*, and that was it. BTW, since that day, I usually shave off some of the "hook" that holds the CDs to the hub. I use an Exacto blade and shave off enough that I can easily pull the CDs off the hub. I've also swapped out the Mosaic cases for different ones. They use the worst kind.

Dave Brubeck - Anything Goes! The Dave Brubeck Quartet Plays Cole Porter (Columbia) 2 eye stereo. Better than I thought it would be. Well spent $5. -
One of the best live Jazz shows I've ever seen in my life was when I saw Jackie McLean at the Village Vanguard in a quartet setting. The rhythm section was Cedar, David Williams & Billy Higgins. What an incredible night that was. I'll always remember that night. Me & Josh Heisler sitting right in front of Jackie, so close that we could read "Jackie McLean" etched into his alto's bell.

As many times as I've seen Cedar live, I never thought to ask for his autograph. I guess he's another of those guys I just figured I'd ask the next time he came through town. I never realized he was already 79. Man, how time flies. I think he was probably around 60 the first time I saw him and I remember thinking how young he looked. BTW, on CD, that Eastern Rebellion date with George Coleman could also be found on the Impulse! label. I have been getting more & more bummed out these past few years as this older generation dies out. I guess I still have their music.
-
I am lucky to have seen Cedar quite a few times over the years. If I saw his name on the bill, I made sure to go. He never disappointed. RIP to a great pianist.
-
Probably not a $500 bill. $500 bills were last printed in 1934 and not in general circulation too often, even in the 60's.

Pacific Jazz/Capitol titles reissued by EMI Japan
Kevin Bresnahan replied to Daniel A's topic in Re-issues
How do these sound though? The last two batches of Japanese reissues have suffered from the "make it louder" camp. I hate buying new CDs today. It's such a crap shoot for sound. -

I don't know who Hans is, but I agree with this sentiment whole-heartedly. He's the guy who turned a thread about Chris being in a documentary into a thread about him and Aloc....all the while proclaiming he's innocent of what most everyone thinks he meant, but are now twisting what he meant (wink, wink) to what he didn't mean (wink wink). Ironically, he also proclaimed he was leaving the board....if you're going to do that.....might as well do it in a thread that was meant to be about Chris....but still posts....and apparently doesn't have me on ignore. The melodrama! There will be a pop quiz on this. And you are simply a troll. I would miss Hans if he stopped posting here. Not you. -
Private Label Jerry Bergonzi LPs For Sale

I E-mailed Bruce at his Berklee E-mail address and he says that he still has copies of all of these LPs. -
Which of his Fontana re-issues was in mono when everyone was expecting it to be in stereo?....Mexican Green? I think so. It was either that or the other way around i.e. the stereo mix supposedly sounds inferior to the mono mix. Edit to add: Listening to mp3 rips from the Japanese CD of Mexican Green right now and it sounds pretty good to me.

As I was spinning "Front End" again last night and posting about this date in the "What Are You Listening To Now" thread, I checked around and found out that Gertz still has these listed on his website. Then I checked around the web and found some crazy prices for a lot of these LPs. Avoid paying big bucks and pick them up from Bruce Gertz directly. -

Gonz (Jerry Bergonzi, Bruce Gertz & Bob Gullotti) - Front End (Not Fat Records). A great sax trio LP. I really like this and can recommend it highly. Bruce Gertz still has a stash of a bunch of his LP dates with Gonz so if you can swing it, grab it while he's still willing to ship them out. Partial LP cover: -
Shit, I'll have to find a copy of that LP too. I was turned onto these sessions by sonnymax years ago and still enjoy spinning them.
