This is one of the few Mosaics I sold and switched over to individual CDs. First off, I didn't like the alternates side by side with the released take, which happens several times in this set. On top of that, I really liked the Capitol stuff, in particular "Blue Serge" and "Boston Blow Up", so it was pretty easy to cherry pick.

Great to find out that there are technical reasons why I just don't like this date. Now if you could just do the same for Green's "Am I Blue".

RIP to a master. End of an era for sure. Not too many left who have played with so many Jazz greats. In looking through his discography, I am surprised at how many sessions I have with him at the piano. His funky piano on the title track of Lee Morgan's "The Sidewinder" would probably be my favorite recording of his. I did see Harris live at least once but I just can't remember where/when it was. It was probably during one of my trips to New York in the late 90's. Harris' "Luminescence!" is probably my favorite of his leader dates. It has a killer band - Slide Hampton, trombone; Junior Cook, tenor; Pepper Adams, bari; Bob Cranshaw, bass; & Lenny McBrowne, drums.

Sold Hopefully more to follow... I am running out of room on the shelves, so I am beginning to look at selling off a few box sets that I just don't get to play much. First up is: Charles Mingus - The Jazz Workshop Concerts 1964-65 (Mosaic). 7 CDs, all played once or twice and in NM condition. The box/booklet is also NM. $170 including USPS Media Mail shipping to a US address. Shipping outside of the US would be at actual cost via USPS. PayPal required although I do have Venmo now so we can talk if that's the way you want to go. Thanks for looking, Kevin

What vinyl are you spinning right now??

Stan Getz - Voyage (BlackHawk Records). Except for the whiny acoustic bass sound, this is pretty good stuff. Looking forward to seeing Kenny Barron at the new Jimmy's Jazz & Blues Club in Portsmouth, NH in February. It'll be my first time going to this new Jazz venue. Editing to add that the Kenny Barron show will be my second show there... I forgot that I bought tickets to see Ambrose Akinmusire in January. -

Blue Mitchell - Step Lightly (Blue Note). I have the old LT (rainbow) LP, not the ridiculously overpriced "Blue Note Review" version that forced you to buy a scarf to hear. It sounds pretty good for one of these LT LPs. I often wondered if some of these LT sessions were held back because of sonic faults as there were a couple that were not in the best sound. This isn't one of them. -
That's a pretty good CD. I buy anything with Renee's name on it. I remember where i found this CD too... it was on the "cheapie rack" right inside the door of the old Planet Records in Harvard Square. I saw "Soul Note" on the spine and pulled it out and then saw Rosnes on the piano. Sold.

I thought the copy-controlled CDs that stirred up all of the trouble were those that had a rootkit on them? All you had to do copy them was turn off Autoplay on your PC so the rootkit didn't install. There may have even been a lawsuit over that one... Edit to add: it was Sony CDs that did this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sony_BMG_copy_protection_rootkit_scandal

My wife snatched my shipment from the doorstep. "Too close to Christmas to be getting in CDs," she says.

Contemporary Records series upcoming on Concord/Craft

Maybe this one? https://craftrecordings.com/blogs/news/craft-recordings-celebrates-70-years-of-contemporary-records -
My copy is due to arrive today. I already got in the earlier recording, "Mabern Plays Mabern", and it's very good. I think this band is killer.

I have that on vinyl. I haven't spun it in years. Maybe it's time to dig it out again?

COVID-19 III: No Politics For Thee

It was stated as termination and yet, they still had a lot of people refuse to get vaccinated. Add him to this list: https://www.sorryantivaxxer.com/ -

My company backed off from their vaccination mandated day of December 1st. They gave everyone who isn't vaccinated a 90 day reprieve. Like that's going to get them to change their minds? Yeah, right. -
I know. I know. I know.... sounds like "Ain't No Sunshine" (great tune by Bill Withers). But that's written in A.

This recording seems to get a new cover almost every time it's reissued. I have it on its first CD incarnation (1989):

Has anyone ever found Jeff's contact info? Given how frequently he used to post here, his last post (above) seems rather ominous. -
Gertz used to have a bunch of old private label (Not Fat, Plug, New Age Records) LPs for sale. All of them with him and Bergonzi. Some good stuff in there.

I saw JJ twice at the Regattabar in Canbridge, MA and back then, me & Rob always got the table at the front so I know all about dodging that slide. Great shows that I'll always remember.

Joe Farnsworth can make almost any date a good one. I love to see Joe on the stage. He has never disappointed me.

I still think that's a lousy cover photo. I wonder if Joe picked it himself? He's doesn't look like he's digging the sun in his eyes. Maybe Joe got a kick out if it?

I didn't know about this one and I see that it was just reissued in Japan. I might have to order that one. -

The daughter of one of my co-workers, who sits in one of the offices next to mine, got married last weekend. My co-worker, his son and quite a few people in the wedding reception are now sick with Covid. Luckily, they were all vaccinated but I am in a remote meeting with him now and he sounds terrible. He's got a pretty bad case. Lucky for him that he's vaccinated if he's this bad. He says he's getting better... I hope that continues. Maine's hospitalizations are now at a record high. -
"Schizophrenia" is one of my favorite Shorter LPs too. I love the first track, "Tom Thumb". I sometimes play that track on repeat a couple of times when I do play the album.

I didn't know him personally but his manager, who I do know, says that he was in good health otherwise. According to him, everyone was very shocked because it happened so fast. He was in work, went home sick one day with cold-like symptoms, went to the hospital a few days later, got intubated for a few days and then died. It was over in less than two weeks. Just to add - and I'm not saying that happened here - there was at least one person in my building who claimed that he got the Johnson & Johnson vaccine and didn't actually get it. This seems to be a thing among some anti-vaxxers. They go as far as to get fake vaccination cards and submit them as proof of vaccination for work & travel purposes. The guy here in my building who falsely claimed he was vaccinated didn't go that far but he definitely tried faking the system by telling everyone he was vaccinated. He eventually got the J&J vaccine because his wife made him get it. My company has a vaccine mandate that starts December 1st. They are still reviewing all the exemption requests. Many of the request are for religious reasons.
