What live music are you going to see tonight?
Kevin Bresnahan replied to mikeweil's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
It's been a year and a half, but Friday night, Scullers Jazz Club in Boston reopens with Kenny Garrett. I'll be there in the front row. -
I am so glad I got to see him live several times, once at the famed Village Vanguard, which was absolutely incredible. At the Vanguard, he told a joke that had most of us laughing pretty good. I wish I could remember it now. RIP Lonnie. You delivered the goods.

I'm glad I bought these last year. The list price bumped up to $499 and there are not many discounts on them. My $249 purchase looks like a steal. The Klipsch Pro Media speakers still seem to getting decent reviews. The Klipsch website has them for $129: https://www.klipsch.com/products/klipsch-promedia-2-1-thx-certified-computer-speaker

Frank Foster
Kevin Bresnahan replied to Teasing the Korean's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
After reading Frank's comments about publishing rights, I was happy to read this article: https://www.npr.org/sections/ablogsupreme/2011/07/26/128245676/jazzman-frank-foster-finally-wins-copyright-of-his-most-famous-song I was also saddened that it happened shortly before he died and even sadder, after he had had a stroke rendering him unable to play. I didn't know he had a stroke in 2001. I used to wonder why he never seemed to tour in the late 90s/early 00s. Now I know. -
What vinyl are you spinning right now??
Kevin Bresnahan replied to wolff's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
I think this is the only time I've ever seen Art Blakey's Islamic name on an album cover. Wasn't he back to using Art Blakey 100% by this time (1964) though? -
My LP from Amazon got delayed to next month.

This past Summer I took our 10 year Golden Retreiver, Auggie, to see & hear some live music. He was smiling for me. -

I use Facebook but they do something weird with picture URLs. They must do it to discourage people from linking to them. I have posted many pictures here from my Facebook account and a few weeks later, it disappears. The picture is still in the same place on Facebook, but Facebook somehow rotates the URL. I haven't tried in many years, but there was a time when I went to upload a picture and I got an error saying that I had reached my max limit for uploads. I had to go delete an old post with a picture so that I could upload a new one. After a few times having to do that, I stopped trying. I'll have to see if I can do it again now. I just tried uploading a 66 kB picture of my dog and it blocked me, saying "You are only allowed to upload 102.4kb". As I said, I stopped trying to upload pictures here a long time ago. -

As a moderator, you might have added capabilities. I cannot upload another photo here unless I delete one I uploaded earlier. -

COVID-19 III: No Politics For Thee

My sister-in-law got her Pfizer booster shot today. I'll be in line as soon as they open it up to my age group. I hope it doesn't take as long as it took to get the first one. -
Billy Harper - Soul of an Angel (Metropolitan Records) Another Metropolitan release that I've been spinning for many years. If you are on Tommy's E-mail list, you might want to pick this up. Excellent music.
-
Xavier Davis - Dance Of Life (Metropolitan Records). Nice CD. Don Braden plays beautifully. I pulled this out because I just got an offer from Tommy for CDs from this catalog. I've had this one for years.
-
Actually, what he said was, "There is no way all of these titles are legit."
-
I talked to someone in the reissue industry and he assured me that these releases were not legit. In fact, he was pretty positive that Getz was under contract with Verve when this recording was made in 1966. Also, the EU copyright extension ends at 1962 (the Beatles rule), so these recordings are not in the public domain there.

Jeez, I thought you were just getting some skin grafts. That sounds like a lot more than that. Good luck with your surgery. There are some great doctors in Boston so you should be in good hands.
-
I've been told that they are really just very nicely done boots so caveat emptor.
-
Good luck. If you get out Friday or Saturday and you want to hear some live music, Kenny Garrett is playing at Scullers. These will be the first live shows there since before Covid.

Frank Foster & Frank Wess - Two For The Blues (Pablo).

I really liked that Frank & Frank session "Two For The Blues" but my favorite leader date would be "Leo Rising" on the Arabesque label from 1997. I've never seen their Concord recording, "Frankly Speaking", on LP or CD. Strangely, it appears to have only be released on CD in Japan one time back in the late 80's and never since. I tried catching Frank live for several years but he didn't seem to come through Boston. -
If what Allen said in an earlier thread, maybe Jackson had trouble finding sidemen? I mean really, if your own dentist thinks you're nasty, it could mean a lot of musicians don't dig you.

According to his website, he had a pretty major health scare back in 2015. They even started a gofundme for him: https://www.gofundme.com/f/2ndyn24?r=80337

His playing was pretty incredible with Joe Henderson. I saw him play with Joe in a trio twice and George's bass playing was superb.
