As much as I love Bird, I'm almost tempted to let this one pass me by. Time will tell, though.

A friend of mine asked me about this a few weeks ago. From what I could tell, everything had already been released on various labels.

In the past, threads on Phil Schaap have met with overwhelmingly negative comments. (Perhaps that's going too far, but I'm sure that the comments have been over 50% negative). Now the guy disappears from the airwaves and folks are concerned. ????

Just my opinion, but I found the guy a smarmy mediocrity. Plus he stole some of his early bits from Steve Allen, who was much funnier and a true innovator. As you can tell, I won't miss him.

Archibald: The Complete New Orleans Sessions 1950-1952 (Krazy Kat) There have been a lot of versions of Stagger Lee over the years, but I believe that Archibald's "Stack-A-Lee" was the first big hit, and Lloyd Price copped Archibald's lyrics for his even bigger hit. Though Lloyd Price did add that beautiful haiku-like: The night was clear and the moon was yellow and the leaves came tumbling down

For me, it's somewhat interesting and also of historical interest, but much more of an oddity than anything else.

Anyone know if the Bud Roost recordings on Japanese LP are speed corrected?

I came to him a bit late and only on recordings, unfortunately. First heard him in 1972 with Merle Haggard, then with Bob Wills, and on his own records. He was a master musician who made the music from his instrument sing and soar. I imagine that he was proud to be called a fiddler and not a violinist. Thanks for the music you gave us, Mr. Gimble.
