    Bird

Three Charlie Parker LPs issued by Dial and reissued as reproductions in a three box set by Spotlite in the early 1980s: I can't vouch for it, but Spotlite (and other sources on the web) say that Bird Plays the Blues was the first jazz LP.
  5. Arrived in the mail yesterday:
  6. Will "Fine and Mellow" be the TV show recording or the Columbia LP recording? The former might be a slight incentive to buy this (although I'd rather watch it and take in the visual drama that comes with the music). Otherwise, I'll pass.
  7. Contact Mosaic. They may have an extra booklet that they can give or sell you.
  8. Dick Stuart (Dr. Strangeglove") Marv Throneberry Dave Kingman
  9. Thought I'd give this a mention. Unusual instrumentations (though that's somewhat usual for Mr. Threadgill) and he doesn't play on all of the tracks. Great music which rewards ongoing listens.
  10. Did JCOA ever issue the other material from the 2LP set as a single LP? Never saw that - only the Cecil.
  11. Rollie Fingers "Twinkle Toes" Selkirk Walt "No Neck" Williams
  12. Cecil Taylor/The Jazz Composer's Orchestra (JCOA)
  13. Tom Stoppard's The Real Thing
  14. I've had three parcels delivered by the USPS in the past four days. All arrived within two days of mailing. Then again, I used to work for the postal service, so perhaps I get preferential treatment. When I did work for the USPS, I remember hearing that Chicago had the worst mail service in the country. Don't know if that was true - just what I heard.
  15. Last week, we visited the latest exhibit at the Loeb Art Center at Vassar College - a collection of large scale paintings by Avery, Rothko, Joan Mitchell, Hedda Sterne, Poons, Nancy Graves, Christopher Winter, and others. A small exhibition, but well worth seeing.
  16. Reminds me of my introduction to Ornette. In the early 60's, I'd read about him before I'd heard his music. I bought a copy of Ornette, took it home, played it, and just couldn't hear what was there. Very disappointing, but I hadn't heard much jazz at that point. I came home from work the next day and put the record on. I was lying down because I was tired, and this time I was relaxed and I wasn't trying so hard to listen. Ornette's music got through to me, and it's been there for me ever since. I remember that I was so tired and relaxed that I actually fell asleep before side one ended.
  17. In the mail today:
